DURATION:
infrequently over the last 2-4 years

SYMPTOM:
coughing/sneezing up small yellow globules of a foul-smelling material.
material is stiff and holds its shape, but can be easily smashed.
sometimes accompanied by sinus pain, but this could be unrelated.
usually accompanied by foul-smelling breath.

NOT SURE if material is coming down out of sinuses and into throat, or if it is coming up out of lungs.

i have attached an image of one of the globules for examination.

has anyone had similar symptoms, and does anyone know what this might be?
i had major cranio-facial surgery that involved work in my sinus area three years ago (Le Fort II) to correct an underbite.

I have the same yellow globules you are talking about and so does one of my coworkers. It took us years to figure out what they were and what to do about them. I have done a lot of research on these things and my coworker even took one to the doctor and had it analyzed. Nothing came of the analysis. What you are describing is most commenly called TONSIL STONES. If you still have your tonsils there are many crevices for food and bacteria to hide in and these "stones" develop.

You most likley can smell one before you see it right? There is a tool that is available at Oriental markets that Asians use to clean their ears with (it looks like a very tiny spoon) that I use to "fish" around occasionally in my tonsils to find one when I smell it. Probably not the greatest idea but I can not stand the smell. But the best thing that I have found to do is use a Yeast inhibitor like Threelac or Acidophilus & Probiotic Complex from Trader Joe's. For some reason this seems to help. Hope this helps you. Look up tonsil stones on the internet too.

Very impressive picture.

The docs have many diagnoses for these nasty things, i.e. cryptic tonsillitis, caseous tonsillitis, tonsil stones....

I had to have my ear drum repaired for an unrelated reason and my ENT decided to take my tonsils out at the same time. It was painful, but no more stinky breath. It was worth it!

I have these and I've had my tonsils removed for over 20 years! So the question remains...what are they?

they're called tosilloliths...a.k.a. tonsil stones, stink balls, sulfur balls XD

My dentist says it's food that gets caught is small caverns in the tonsils. They stink to high hell.

I am 55 and started getting them about 10 years ago, I also had my tonsils out 47 years ago. I can't find anything on the internet to explain what else they could be?
