I had my perfectly functioning gall bladder removed on 12-14-11. I too suffered a very large bile leak, and ended up back in the hospital a few days later. Collapsed lung, septic shock, blood infusions, iv nutrition, drains, stent by ERCP, abscess 9n my liver...it was so traumatic, I honestly believed I was going to die.

Six years later, I am still suffering from life-threatening sepsis and bacteremia. I have polycystic liver and kidney disease, so it is even more complicated. Six years of all imaging available, and still no source has been found. I am now starting to fail antibiotics...and my infections are getting more aggressive, and more resistant. Any infection I get now could be my last.

I am on the liver transplant list at UCSD in San Diego, but my MELD score is much too low to get a liver in time to save my life. I am now waiting to be listed for live donor transplant at USC.

My original surgeon told me that I wouldn't be going through any of this, if he hadn't given me the bile leak...people whose quality of life has been so radically affected should have legal recourse. None of us chose this...we should be compensated for our suffering, loss of wages, etc.

I don't know where to start, but am going to try and find an attorney willing to take the case. I tried getting an attorney to represent me when this all started happening, but no one wanted to take my case, as the surgeon was a celebrated transplant surgeon, and the hospital covered for him.

I for one would like to see justice done in these cases. Any suggestions?

In September 2012 I had my gallbladder removed and the surgeon cut the bile duct to my liver. A 45 min surgery turned into 5 hours. My family sat worried and asked for updates with no response. When I woke up I had a bandage 6 inches long across my abdomen and a drainage bulb coming from the same area. This well known surgeon kept me in the hospital for 5 days before he transferred me to a better qualified hospital in Houston. Shortly after arriving there, my head started pounding and I became confused and developed a fever 0f 104.7. It wasn't until shift change was I found by a team member doctor on my case and was rushed to emergency surgery and awoke in ICU. I had gotten sepsis and nearly died. At that point I now had 3 drainage bags the size of IV bags coming from the same surgical area. The new surgeon told me what happened and I remained in the hospital for another 3 weeks. Following my release I had to have multiple surgeries to replace the 3 drainage bags and also received home health care 3 times a week for 4 months. After 2 months from having the final bag removed I suddenly had a gran Mal seizure. I had a nursing degree and was then told I could never work again and developed anxiety, depression, Chrons disease on top of PTSD! I was in my late 30sand now am in my mid 40s and my life is ruined! I can't drive and my working career is over! I couldn't sue the original surgeon because the multi specialty clinic WE both worked for was in bankruptcy court and my files weren't available! This surgeon is still practicing today even after several other surgical errors he's made since mine!! I'm completely devasted and am waiting for disability to decide on my case, all in the meantime I can't get any financial help for my bills! My recommendation for a gallbladder removal surgery is to ALWAYS get a second opinion and don't do it UNLESS it's truly necessary!! Keep your gallbladder!!
