I too have PCOS and have always taked Glucophage for the whole first trimester per doctor's orders. Both pregnancies I did that, I delivered two healthy babies almost 2 years apart. Anyone with PCOS should not only take glucophage at least a month prior to trying to concieve but should continue on it throuhg the whole first trimester. Trust me--it works!!! :-)

Hi, how great to find other people in similar situations, just knowing there are others out there like me makes me feel better. Last month I was diagnosed by my wonderful, internationally renowned fertility doc (Dr. Elizabeth Pritts of WI Fertility Institute in Madison, WI) as pre-diabetic with PCOS after having tried for almost a year to get pregnant. She started me on Metformin (I guess it's also called glucophage?), Provera if I don't menstruate on my own after 30 days of a cycle (with my long, irregular cycles, I don't usually), letrazole (also called Femara, an alt. to Clomid) on days 3-7, and Ovidrel if I don't ovulate on my own (which historically I don't). First cycle was last month, and since I got Auntie Flow yesterday, it was obviously not successful (yet!). HOWEVER, my point is my doc prescribed the metformin until week 12 of pregnancy. Helps prevent miscarriage, which I am terrified of happening. She prescribed 1500 mg (three 500 mg tablets) but to work up to that - 500 mg a day the first week of taking it, then 1000 mg the second week, and 1500 mg the third week and until week 12 of pg. But I had side effects after I increased it to 1500 mg: awful nausea, dizziness, lightheadedness, and the like. She told me to go back down to 1000 mg and work my way up to 1500 more slowly. Have yet to increase my dosage over 1000 mg b/c the side effects were debilitating. Good luck to everyone out there going through these kinds of struggles! P.S. I got my period on day 28 of my cycle, so much sooner and more "normal" than I can ever remember!

I take glucophage and have numerous medical problems. I had a toxic throid goiter and PCOS and became insulin resisitant due to the thyroid complications. My doc figured it out when I gained 20 lbs in a month while my throid was extremely OVERACTIVE.
I can't imagine what I'd have gained had my metabolism been normal. I was always nauseated and couldn't eat. My primary put me on glucophage and I lost the weight and feel much better. When I found out that I was pregnant with my daughter I talked with my OB about the insane weight gain and sickness I experienced before taking the meds. He and I both agreed that it would be safest to continue the glucophage for the duration of the pregnancy. Extreme weight gain and poor eating would be very harmful to the baby. I have always had erratic periods and for more than a year before my pregnancy I bled almost constantly. For the first 14 weeks with her I had bleeding. My daughter was born at 38 weeks 7lbs 4oz, happy and healthy. I'm sure I would have lost her without the medication. Baby number 2 is due in June and I will continue the glucophage again. I hope that this post is helpful, good luck!

I would be careful. My wife took Glucophage for the first trimester and we have now found out five years later that my daughter has two heart defects. If you even go to the Bristol-Myers website, it says it's a type B medication and not to take it during pregnancy. My daughter has had one successful surgery already, but she will need a valve replaced later in life.

I have had irregular periods ever since my menstrual days have began (at the age of 10). I'm now 24, and have been diagnosed with PCOS for about 6 years. I quite taking my birth control back in August of last year and that was the last time i had had a period. My husband and I are now trying to start a family and I've been taking Glucophage for about 8 wks. 8 wks ago she put me on 500mg glucophage (slowly increasing my dosage), and Provera (to give me a period). I took the Provera for 10 days and then had a very short 2 day period (normal for me when i had a period while on birth control was 5-6 days). My doc was hoping that I would have a period on my own after that but I never did. I have been feeling more and more nauseous in the morning especially, and got sick (vomitting sick) for just 1 day after just smelling some BBQ chicken and sausage. I've also eaten some strange combos of food too. And like i said, i\'ve not had another period. When i first saw my OBGYN doc, she told me she was very hopeful that the Glucophage would work and that i would become preg - since i started taking the glucophage, i've taken at least 1 preg test every week and each of them have come out neg. Now i am aware that there is a good handful of women out there that just won't test positive on those for some reason (my brother and his wife are preg - she took 3 preg tests -1 was + the other 2 were not - and those were taken AFTER the + test) i saw the doctor Thursday and she did a blood preg test - i was supposed to get the results Friday, but the doctor left before the results were in so i guess i won't know until Monday if im preg or not. I REALLY hope that i am. Also, my OBGYN told me that she would keep me on the Glucophage for the first 10-12 wks after i am preg to help keep the baby. ANY COMMENTS?

Hello. I was diagnosed with PCOS and diabetes about 6 weeks ago. The posts I have read has been very helpful. I've also wondered about what I would do about the glucophage if I was to become pregnant. Unlike alot of the other posts, I do not have a choice on whether to stop the use of glucophage or to keep taking it. Because of the diabetes, it would have the possibility of being more fatal to me and my unborn baby if I was not taking the med. I've tried for years to conceive and although I havent missed my period this month, there are signs happening to my body indicating early pregnancy. My sugar has been very well under control since I've started the use of glucophage and I'm no longer worried about that being a problem during pregnancy. I've recently lost 53 pounds and although I've always had irregular periods since I started my periods (at age 11), the last 4 months (before the glucophage), I started having my periods right on time. So, many things that are suppose to increase chances of fertility has happened and I'm very hopeful. Thank you all very much and please pray for my husband and I that we FINALLY can become parents and parents to a healthy happy baby. :-D

Hi,

I was told by my gyn that I had PCOS, there was no blood test done, she diagnosed this from my irregular period history and the fact that i was over weight by 10 pounds. I am now on Glyciphage sr 500 mg, once a day and have been on this for 5 months, my weight seems to be constant not increasing and i wm excersising and resonably controlling my diet. Should i increase my dosage?

hey everyone! I must say after reading some of these posts I have a little more hope in my journey of getting pregnant.  I was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 15 after finally going to see my gyno due to not having any periods at all.  She put me on birth control which I only took for a short time because the cramping was too much for me to handle.  After seven years of not being on the birth control, getting a pap test or having a period, I finally went to see my gyno because my fiance' and I were having sex on a regular basis and I never became pregnant. My gyno put me back on birth control so my period would at least start back up again, which it did. I had a normal period that lasted about 7-9 days.  I then took myself off the BC after 3months and was put on 500mgs of Metformin by my gyno.  Not once did I have a period or become pregnant so after almost a year of being on that dosage she put me on 1000mgs which im still currently taking.  I have been on that dosage for about 2 months and still, no period.  I am now on 1500 mgs of Metformin, taking 1000mgs in the morning and 500mg at night.  She told me that if this dosage does not work then I will have to go to the hospital to be put on clomid. After 8 years of not being able to conceive Im starting to loose hope. Tomorrow will be my first day of taking the 1500mgs of Metformin so we will see what happens. Im hoping that I wont have to be put on clomid, as the chances of having multiples are higher, but if need be I will.

Hi guys. Very helpful post. I'm new here too. Got pregnant by FET and miscarried at 5 and a half weeks but got pregnant again ( thanks to ivf) 9 weeks now. Been on metformin XR 750 twice a day for about 3 years now( feels like ages) for pcos and very high insulin levels. I too an having the same dilemma as my infertility specialist think I should stop after 12 weeks and I feel so used to it I'm not sure if I should or will my body act weird if I stop all of a sudden after continued use....

Hi all. This is very helpful. I'm new to this blog. I'm 39 pcos, had very high insulin levels. Been on metformin XR 750 twice a day for 3 years. Got pregnant last year( thx to FET by IVF) but miscarried at 5 and a half months then got pg again 8 months now and experiencing the se dilemma. My infertility specialist recommend that I stop taking it after 12 weeks. But I'm skeptical about stopping it all of a sudden after having taken it for so long...(feels like ages) wondering if my body will react adversely if I stop... Really confused. Would love to get your thoughts/ experiences

Hi there.
What dose were you on during your entire pregnancy? Did this affect your appetite in any way? Thanks
