hi...ate fresh grapefruit segments from the large jar at walmart's produce section... and then abd pain, bloating, tan , fatty stools following for at least a week...weight gain....ate a large quantity of this grapefruit in a 24-36 hour period, very unlike me...aware of the chemical in grapefruit which interacts in the intestine...certain meds like lipitor and seratonin are to be avoided cuz it intensifies their response...has anyone had such a problem...non med related? with digestion because of this grapefruit effect?...would appreciate any input..the doc ruled out gall bladder via ultrasound, initially, then did ct scan because of the stool spec coming back with high fat content and persistent mid abd pain , near the pancreas...all norm and she is looking at any research on this...tx! everyone, feel better!!!!
Had the same problem not once but twice and couldn't link it to Anything until sonwibe told me They ate the same thing we did and Had same pain. Having it right now which is why I am looking it up on line. What did u do to releive the pain?
always be sure no fever , blockage.ie constipation...check your lab work if pain persists...location of pain important too...any vomiting?..i had none...self eased with time and being reassured no anatomical dilemma after that ct scan and ultrasound...don't dismiss pain if persistent..i tamed the diet as well...yogurt, less gluten...good luck!
I had the same thing. I ate a grapefruit and within half an hour started getting stomach cramps in my upper abdomen. All movement in my digestive tract seemed to cease up. The cramps were very painful for about 3 days then eased a bit. No diarrhoea, no vomiting, no fever, no gas, no bowels movements at all really. but lots of bloating. It has been a week and it is easing slowly. I drank lots of water and ate fibrous foods. I took some hyoscine for the cramps. Now bowel movements are returning to normal but still some pain in the upper abdomen. I have never had this before. Like a stomach bug but without the diarrhoea or vomiting.
Recently (60 days ago) ate Walmart Del Monte Grapefruit (in large jar) and within 10 minutes had severe stomach issues that required ER visit and hospitalization the next day. Happened again this week and spent 2 days in hospital - had wife throw away Del Monte Grapefruit product and I'm convinced (especially after reading this thread and the same thing happening 2 months later) that it was the source of the problem. Over $50K in hospital bills over 2 visits and I'll never eat grapefruit (Del Monte or otherwise) again.

Hello, guest.
It is possible to have an allergic reaction to grapefruit. Allergic reactions occur when the immune system mistakenly identifies a substance, such as a protein in grapefruit, as harmful and triggers an immune response.
Common symptoms of a grapefruit allergy may include:
1. Skin reactions: Itching, hives, redness, or swelling of the skin.
2. Gastrointestinal symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or diarrhea.
3. Respiratory symptoms: Runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath.
4. Anaphylaxis: In severe cases, an allergic reaction can lead to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition characterized by difficulty breathing, rapid drop in blood pressure, loss of consciousness, and other severe symptoms.
It's important to note that an allergy to grapefruit is relatively rare, but it can occur. An allergist or immunologist can perform specific tests, such as skin prick tests or blood tests, to determine if you have a grapefruit allergy. If a grapefruit allergy is confirmed, it's crucial to avoid grapefruit and any grapefruit-containing products to prevent future allergic reactions.
Always carry an epinephrine auto-injector if you have a history of severe allergies and have been prescribed one by your healthcare provider. If you experience severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face and throat, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
Here are some steps you might consider taking if you think Del Monte is responsible for your reaction:
Contact the manufacturer: Reach out to Del Monte to inform them about your experience and the health issues you faced after consuming their product. They may investigate the matter and take appropriate action if there is a problem with their product.
Report to the FDA: You can also file a complaint with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to report the adverse reactions you experienced after consuming the Del Monte Grapefruit product. The FDA monitors and investigates such reports to identify potential issues with food products.
Document your medical records: Make sure to keep copies of your medical records, bills, and any other relevant documentation related to your hospitalizations and treatment. This documentation may be useful if you decide to take legal action.
Consult with an attorney: If you incurred significant medical expenses and believe that the Del Monte Grapefruit product caused your health issues, it might be beneficial to consult with a personal injury attorney. They can help you understand your rights and options for seeking compensation if you believe you suffered harm due to a defective or dangerous product.
Consider a product liability claim: If it is determined that the product was, in fact, the cause of your health issues, you may have grounds for a product liability claim against the manufacturer or distributor of the Del Monte Grapefruit product.
