I have been having external hemorrhoids for about 2 years (when i was pregnant with my son). I have about 3 of them and they are about the size of dimes most of the time. I went in for a pap yesterday and told the doctor about them and how they hurt and he said the only way to get rid of them is remove them and he said he will call the general surgeon to set up an appointment. Now i have a few questions: If hes setting up an appointment would that mean that i will have an actual surgery to remove them? What kinds of ways can they be removed? And lastly do they usually administer a local or general anesthetic for this type of thing because i am horrified by the thought of having local and being awake through the whole thing. Please anybody who has gone through this any answers would be helpful!
Since he's contacting a surgeon, yes you will then be recommended to undergo surgery. Most common one is hemorrhoidectomy where the surgeon uses a scalpel to excise it. There are other kinds of surgery like laser coagulation and laser therapies for external hemorrhoids, which are less common. And you will most likely be administered general anesthetics.
