Here's my story - I had silicone gel implants June 2002. I think my urticaria hives started on my scalp about 2 years later. They progressed to my body - welts and general itching, and random facial swelling (angiodema).

I hate to tell you that 8 years later I am still getting the hives. It is pretty much daily itching attacks, that I just live on permanent daily dose of anti-histamine.  I have seen an allergy specialist, he believed they would randomly Stop just as they randomly started. Over the years when I have gone back to see him, I have had various tests, have never been able to identify a trigger, and been reassured (?) by specialist that it's proven safe to take up to 6 antihistamines a day (imagine needing that much!). I did specifically ask him one visit if it was related to my implants - he looked into it but came back saying he didn't think they were related. Yet I do wonder. If I knew for sure I would have them removed - but don't want to go thru the expense and the procedure and then still suffer afterwards.

I feel as though my auto immune system has become highly sensitive perhaps due to the foreign items within.  I have also developed Celiac disease (auto-immune) since my implants and have suffered other sensitivities, inflammatory issues and hormonal imbalances. So would removal fix all these issues? If only we could know for sure!

Thirteen days ago I had my over the muscle implants removed & under implants put in with a lift. Two postop I began a skin rash with I rationalized was a reaction to antibiotic & took myself off of it. Called my doctor to report it. I am 13 days postop & covered shoulders to knees with hives. Now I understand when people go mental due to a physical condition that invades their minds. I have reported the severity to my doctor & he has recommended an anti-fungal thinking its a skin yeast infection. Never heard of that. I go see him tomorrow & am praying for a miracle. Never had a problem with my old implants. Mmmm, don't try to make it better?! I learned a very expensive leasson.

Any chance the antibiotic you were on was Cephalexin (Keflex)?  There seem to be many people, who were on it because of reasons other than getting implants, that developed rash and then hives for weeks and months after taking it.

I have had two set of saline implants witch leaked so I got silicone and then gummy bear. All because of my uneven chest. I love how they look and everything has been fine. I have had the gummy bear implants since 05. Last year 2011 I took a Zpak antibiotic for a respiratory problem in dec. and not long after I broke out in a rash that hasn't left ever since. I think the problem lies the antibiotic coupled with having implants or just the antibiotic. I was under stress at the time of taking the antibiotic. Planning my daughters wedding, but no stress now. It has to be the antibiotic.

Here's some interesting info that might help someone, apparently there is a test for silicon reactions.  That will be my next step.  waiting for results to a metals test right now.

I realize this post is very old. However, I to have had teh same reaction to my saline implants. I got them 2 years ago, and about a month after broke out in hives everywhere. It got so bad I was admitted to the hospital for 2 days. Nevertheless since then I have been taking 1 zyrtec every day since. Now I too thought the only change was my implants, but doctors & my surgeon said it couldn't be. Years later here I am , still taking zyrtec everyday, when I NEVER had allergies at all before. Today I go back to the allergist because I think my body has gotten immune to the zyrtec & is now been covered in hives for 2 days. I will be bringing up this forum, as well as all the opther research I have done. I definitely believe that there is a serious connection to implants and allergic reactions. I am ready to bring this further then forums. If we start it, something has to come of it. Us women must be warned. We have aneough dangers to worry about, WE NEED TO KNOW THE CONNECTION!!! I want my old life back, this is frustrating!! Vanity got me nowhere I guess.

The same here. More than 25 years now. Breast implants took my health. Nothing in the world worth that.

Perhaps this guest has not read the medical journals such as the one posted at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov that have recorded data and results of in-depth studies of women who suffer with "Silicone Induced Granulomatous Adenitis", "Silicone Lymphadenopathy", or "Silicone Granulomas" that present with axillary lymph nodes swollen, and when a biopsy of the lymph nodes is performed, silicone is found there and identified as the culprit. Or perhaps this guest has not read about or known women who have found, after exhaustive tests, speculations and multiple symptoms, that silicone from their breast implants (which had been removed many years prior to the final finding!) was found to be deposited in and on their chest cavity, in their liver, even in their farthest extremities, such as their feet! Or perhaps this guest has never seen an allergic reaction to silicone that causes a rash that begins under the breasts and spreads over the trunk and thighs...that is directly linked to silicone "bleeding" from defective prostheses and has lasted SO FAR for approximately two years with no response to multiple types of medications, topical and ingested, as well as homeopathic protocols.
Yes, women choose to have breast implants put into their bodies, but at the same time, they should be able to expect that the product is safe, since that is what breast implant manufacturers are maintaining in spite of all evidence to the contrary. While there is no "definite" link that has been proven beyond the "shadow of a doubt" to Lupus, there IS plenty of proof of their involvement in other medical diagnoses. Some suggest that fear of lawsuits along with greed associated with dishonest gain, may be deterring, motivating and biased factors in so-called "impartial" clinical trials and patients' diagnoses.
Perhaps this guest is unfamiliar with the circumstances of a certain patient who, after having silicone implants put in in 1981, saw how her particular implants both ruptured (silently), as she began to have multiple symptoms such as have been seen in so many cases over the years. In her search for help for the many and varied symptoms, she spent so much time, energy and money, while her time, energy and money would have been so much better spent on and with her family. It has taken many years of her youth on into her now older years to realize that the symptoms that she has experienced for so long will be with her to her grave; and she has been robbed of her good health while placing trust in a defective product.
It became a legal battle in public ( much to her embarrassment!) after she had simply asked the manufacturer of that defective product to pay for the surgery to remove them, to which the manufacturer's representative replied that if she did not have the "labels" from the defective product, they were unwilling to do anything, even though the woman had a copy of the check that was written to that manufacturer's sales company. Her insurance company would not pay for the surgery either, saying that it was classified as "cosmetic surgery"...There was nothing cosmetically beautiful about those defective implants and what their rupture has done to her physical condition. Worse was what the situation did to her mental and emotional state as she was unable to find medical relief for her symptoms, and so, was unable to care properly for her duties as a wife and mother at many different junctures of her life!
It was unfortunate for that manufacturer that this woman had a friend who was a private investigator and another who was a lawyer who were both willing to assist her in making connections for acquiring the proofs that the manufacturer was unwilling to provide. Due to their diligence and honest efforts, the evidence was recovered and presented in a court of law. And although the woman was informed that she could have a settlement that ranged in the millions of dollars, she declined to sue for anything other than the cost of her surgery and medical bills attached to it. And by the way, the evidence was convincing enough that the court found her suit to be not frivolous, but even more than that, the court awarded her beyond what was requested! The monies that she was awarded have not in the least begun to touch the medical bills that have followed due to the damage done by the defective product, and she has to deal with those medical bills along with her failing health chronically.
So, perhaps, this guest should do research and spend time meditating on such matters, before categorically finding fault with those whom have been victimized by manufacturers and corporations who have put monetary value above the value of human life and its quality.

please do not have a lift. Why suffer more. Just be glad to have those toxic implants out and if you do your research, they could possibly shape themselves back after a few months:)
You have done enough harm to your self. Be kind to your self and trust in life.

Hi did your hives ever go away? I love this site, but no one seems to followup on it, and the posts are all so old. I just have broken out in hives at all contact points, like you. I am taking Claritin and Benadryl, but it does not seem to be helping.

Beatrice I had implants in 2010. I fought the doctor through the Board of professional regulation as I asked for C cup and he put in double Ds on this tiny 5 foot not even 100 pound body. I won and he was made to pay for another doctor to replace the first implants with much smaller size implant. With the first implants I had just a mild breakout on my upper back which went away. With the second set of implants I have a month or two later I had a patch of lesions on my upper back just along my upper spine, severe sleep disturbances and fatigue that is so bad that I have to crash in my car for an hour at the end of the day just to have the energy to drive home. I itch from head to toe especially on my nipples and where the lesions (which have NEVER gone away) are. The lesions have been there for 3-4 yrs now. They are like dry patches but they never go away and when I scratch them they bleed and become painful. I use vinegar undiluted on them every night which really helps to keep them calm and helps them heal but they only heal a little bit and never go away. I also want to add that right after the first set of implants were removed I had about a month or two where I felt fantastic but then was floored with the same symptoms as with the first set only this time much worse. It is very important that all women understand that implants are toxic and not worth the short lived "euphoria" you may have with getting bigger breasts. The only reason I got mine was to cover up a birth defect between my breasts which is concave. I am working on saving the money to have them removed and look forward to my original A cup again.

The doctors will never tell you the truth because they know there would be a huge loss in revenue for those who do breast implants. There is a code between doctors and they just aren't going to tell the truth. They will protect one another.

I do not believe what you are saying. I had my first set removed and the lesions and itching all completely went away. 4 Weeks after the second set were put in the itching and lesions returned and have not gone away even once.
