I am gathering info to help me decide how to move forward.  My Uroligist suggests Cyber laser.  I am investigating alternatives such as HoLEP.  Anyone know of an experienced DR. (with HoLEP procedure) in the Chicago area ?  Also considering Mayo or Indiana U as I want someone experienced.  If you had either procedure your feedback (pro/con) is welcome.

Hi I had the HOLEP surgery in Indiana with Dr. Lingeman in December and I'm extremely pleased and wish I had done it years ago when my local urologist had advised me to go and see Dr. Lingeman in Indianapolis. There are very , very few urologists who can perform this surgery due to the high learning curve and, as a result, many urologists tell their patients to have another form of surgery including open prostatectomy if the prostate is too large. Unlike TURP, HOLEP can be performed on any size prostate. Dr. Lingeman brought the procedure to the US when he went over to New Zeeland to learn it back in 1998, I believe. I don't think there is anyone who has performed more. In any event, he is very, very well thought of due to his experience. Best of luck in whatever you decide. If you are in Chicago, you are pretty close to Indianapolis so Dr. Lingeman would be a great choice.

You have the best! As I look back at my diary my biggest issue was 7 days of constipation due to the Anesthesia. It can do that- not all! Just prepare for that possibly. Drink a lot of water. HoLEP on Wednesday n flew home on Saturday. No issues. Mike in Louisiana

Dr. Krambeck and her staff are incredible. I went into surgery about 11:30am and was released before 3:30pm. The meds they prescribed avoided the constipation problem and minimized the burning while urinating. Thought I was done bleeding Friday, but passed some debris Friday night and Saturday that led to minor bleeding, but now, on Sunday evening, things are clearing up.
Dr. Krambeck is certainly not lacking in self confidence, almost to the point of arrogance. But when you are as good at what you do as she is, you deserve to be confident. At this point I would totally recommend her to anyone dealing with an enlarged prostate.

As I said in my comment above it has been way better than I dared to hope for. Dr. Krambeck's staff is very thorough. Everything went very smoothly.
In fact, by the time my wife was allowed into the recovery room, I was already wide awake, had eaten a sandwich and was dressed.

Things have definitely been up and down. Was great for a couple days, but for the last 10 days have had a couple good days followed by a couple days of lots of blood, debris and clots. Spoke to Dr. Krambeck's PA last Friday and she stated this wasn't all that unusual. It could last another month. That didn't square with the assurances Dr. Krambeck gave my wife while I was in recovery. I am frustrated and haven't left the yard since Thanksgiving. I have a ton of things that need to be done before the snow flies, but I am paranoid about doing them.
Mike, was your experience similar?

No! Not at all.....I had maybe 2 or 3 occurrences of debris size of eraser - my surprise at day 30 was a feeling of burn sensation peeing n at annas; BUT, Ms Allison, PA, said that would pass - AND she was right........about day 50 it stopped - guess part of healing - I am ALL GOOD....pissing with noise n bubbles..

Glad to hear your hernia surgery went well.
I am improving much more slowly than I was expecting. Still hurts to urinate most of the time, but no blood in a couple weeks. Some small bits of debris, but nothing like the several inch long pieces I was seeing in mid-December. Would be nice to be able to sit normally without pain.
Hopefully things will continue to improve, albeit slowly.
