Hello all
I just had my internal and external hems surgically removed yesterday..I have lived with these painful buggers for 23 years. I gained these gems from childbearing..just one of many gifts I received..lol. I have gone back and forth for years on whether to remove them or not. I have researched the topic heavily, talked to many people who had the procedure themselves, had several consults with Doctors..so I went into this well informed.
First thing you should know is that I am a vegan that eats only a raw diet, so my bms are very loose and I have several a day. so upon waking from the surgery, was able to bm several times..to the tune of 5 times before being discharged, and was able to urinate fine also. My anal area was very numb from the injections that the surgeon had given me so I was able to wake up without any pain.
Upon arriving home I have taken the pain medication as directed every 4 hours 1 vicodin 5 mgs, and 2 dulcolax before bedtime. I am drinking fresh squeezed apple juice, water, and vegetable broth for the first 24 hours to help slow the bms down a but which seems to have helped. To help myself naturally ease some pain I am sitting in a sitz bath which sits right on my toilet with warm water in it, so far 4 times which is making me more comfortable. I also have made up an ice pack which also has helped make me more comfortable. My Doctor did prescribe me a pain cream called Dibucaine Ointment. This also seems to bring relief. I am not in massive pain, I am staying ahead of the pain as recommended by several people who had the surgery themselves.I am noticing spotting with blood, nothing out of control yet, but I did just get home from the surgery 14 and half hours ago..:-) I feel a full feeling in my bottom area, but was told by my Dr. not to push down when I feel this, to sit on the toilet and let things happen naturally. He also explained the full feeling was a symptoms of the surgery experience.
I feel terrible for those whose Doctors misinformed them! I went to Dr. Joeseph Pessin with the Wheaton Fransican group. He does not candy coat anything, in fact he does everything to take care of the probalem without going through surgery, and thinks surgery is the last resort depending on the case. He was very careful to tell me that the healing process is a long painful one for most people, but my experience depended on my own aftercare also. He explained that I should take things very careful, no heavy lifting, what things to purchase ahead of time to make myself as comfortable as possible, and that I should experience an ease up in my pain in about 3-4 weeks..this seems so long to me, but he was just being honest. He was careful with his wording sating most people and that my experience might be prolonged or shortened.
I hope to come back and post again... and I hope hope hope to have a fast recovery..fingers crossed
update!! this post was from about 4 hrs ago and was copy pasted from another are of discussion ..it is my post but I was not a registered user in that area..lol...so the new update is this..I have passed my first bm after the numbing effects have worn off from the surgical procedure....I must say from reading the other posts I was very scared of this event...but it was actually a great relief...I do recommend taking the laxatives to keep the stool loose, very helpful. I found the first bm experience to be a relief though, the intense pressure I was feeling is not as intense now, so I am much more comfortable...
day three after surgery update***
With the numbing medicine completely worn off I have been able to keep myself comfortable with the continues sitz baths every hour, icing every three hours, pain meds every four hours, numbing cream after each icing and 2 laxatives at bedtime. My diet consists of rice, soft veggies cooked down into a veggie broth two times a day, and once a day a raw dairy free pudding made up from avocados, honey, and raw cacao. Also twice a day to help keep infection away I make up a concoction of 1 teaspoon of raw honey and 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon and eat this...
My plan is to start weening off of the pain meds on day 7 and to start juicing on day 5 also weening myself from the laxatives to 1 before bedtime so that I do not have any sort of narrowing issues later, we will see how this plan goes!! Trying my natural lifestyle and dealing with comfort levels is a balancing game for sure..
I will say that this is uncomfortable at worst, but not unbearable. I had read so many posts and was very scared for what I was about to get myself into, especially since I am on my own being that my husband is deployed, and I must keep up with my home, bills, and dogs on my own...though I am not doing it easily, I am doing it still..just at a much slower pace..and I would highly recommend that everyone undergoing this procedure pace themselves, make sure you stay ahead of the pain..
Day 6**
I made it past the dreadful day 5 hard bm...not the best feeling ever, but not the passing out experience I had expected. I am sure it is different for everyone. What I have experienced is the following: I did end up with a mild infection which my surgeon addressed immediatly with antibiotics, the next issue I ran into is I am a clean freak, so even though I was "patting" myself clean and using the IV tubing to rinse myself I managed to lose skin in two spots near the anus which makes for very sore bowl movements. The stinging and burning results from that are a little hard to bear, but at this time I am trying my best to keep those areas clean and dry. I was thinking of taking an extra step and maybe using gauze on those spots during bms just to avoid thr burning. Outside of that things are healing up fine. I am still eating soups, this time adding crackers and soften veggies. As far as pain meds I am taking them as scheduled and still sticking with the plan to ween off, and to start juicing which is tomorrow...
Also there is a miracle little product....tucks with witch hazel..brought me much relief!!
d oes anyone know if infection has any symptoms i had my op 11 days ago and still in pain having trouble with bm lots of stingjng and burning av been back to a an e they sent me away with tarrodol rang surgeon yesterday he didnt want to know said i had to see my gp am avin lots of salt baths naxopren paracetimol lactalose movicol what more is left for me i canot go on like this i want myt piles back less painful
Yes signs of infection are the skin in the area is red and swollen, warn t the touch, pain in getting steadily worse, fever, chills..I found relief with the bms by pulling a trash bin very close to the toilet and placing my feet on the bin to were my legs are upward..there are videos on youtibe which show you how..I cannot post the links but the names are something like how to poop 2.0 ..just research this a lot the way I did..I figured out how to make do with my bathroom trash can and I have never been happier..after purchasing so many product to ease this bm pain and being on pain meds ..who knew I was just positioning myself wrong..I didnt have to buy anything...just used my trash can..I am not sre if this works for everyone..so come back on and keep me posted!! best of luck..
I had mine done 3 days ago there's nothing positive to say about this surgery I don't know why they can't provide proper pain relief? They sent me home with panadole and that was the beginning of the end this type of sugery should be banned. It's the devil
I feel for my brothers and sisters in hemorrhoidal surgery suffering. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I'm 10 weeks removed from surgery and I'm still having more bad days than good. I had 5 large hemorrhoids and a fistula taken care of. My first bowel movement was on day five and it's as bad as all have described. There were times when all I wanted was a good pee and peeing was sometimes uncomfortable. Farts are a problem for a few weeks. Hot baths at this stage are a must because they do provide relief for the extreme pain. It's also good to time your meds. with a bowel movement, but that might not be practicable. At day 12 I chose to forego refilling my prescription. Each week there is noticeable improvement. There is occassional minor bleeding or blood during bowel movements. I might pop a Motrin if the pain is unbearable after a movement - especially at bedtime. Around week seven I felt a very noticeable improvement. I stopped taking the baths after a bowel movement because it seemed to only aggravate the soreness. The baths also made my scrotum ache after a while. I've used plenty of baby wipes, witch hazel wipes, sanitary napkins, and adult briefs up to this point. Now I'm at the point where I still try to limit my bowel movements to one, or none, a day. No bowel movement = little or no pain/soreness. The pain after a movement is down to a five instead of the original ten rating. The soreness after a movement, most times, makes you not want to do anything but limit the suffering for several hours. But life goes on and you have to get things done despite the pain. No bowel movement = little or no pain/soreness and happiness. I wish a few would share how long it took to be completely normal. After my last Dr.'s visit (2nd post op) I was told I still have some healing to do and there was nothing unusual. I was told that if I'm not completely healed in two months, to make an appointment. That was about three weeks ago. I don't know...I've had ten weeks of sufferring and I can easily see another ten weeks or more. STAY STRONG!
I am going onto week 4 now...I have had fairly good luck I believe. I do not take pain medication, and havent since day 7. I started juicing that day and went back to my raw diet with regular loose bowel movements. I am a little sore after Bms sometimes , but nothing unbearable. I began a lite exercise program this last Monday...going very slow. This is hard for me as I was a runner before the surgery and I feel that I have lost some muscle being without vital exercise. I am hoping to be one of the 8 week success stories. I am using lite liners now with very little to no discharge which is also good. Still doing sitz baths after each bm as told to by DR. Another very good sign, no bleeding at all...
i'm two weeks out after surgery. i wasn't told why, just to use Desitin. i didn't for the first three days. I ended up with a "diaper rash", because they left the incision open to heal there is drainage. So i started using it. IT IS WONDERFUL! not only did it clear up the rash, but it also helps with the discomfort.
There are success stories out there!! :-D
I, like about everyone else on this post, was freaking out after reading about the horrible pain that will follow after surgery, and even tried to talk my Doctor out of it the day of the surgery!
I had my surgery last Monday and I am happy to say I got back to work yesterday (didn't think I would be "happy" to be back to work, but I am!) When I got home after surgery, I went to bed, I also started taking 1 - 200 mg ibuprophen and 1 - 325 Tylenol every 2 hours, switching between the two. I set my alarm on my phone and took them EVERY 2 hours, night and day! I think this is what made my recovery so successful. I also took soaked in the tub at least 4 times a day for at least 20 minutes. I pretty much didn't do a thing for 4 days. My Husband was an excellent nurse, I only ate vegetables, fruit, soup and oatmeal. I had a few bran muffins over the course of a week, but that was it. I drank tons and tons of water, I mean at least double the 64 oz, at least 128 ounces, so I had to use the bathroom alot, but hey, I wasn't doing much else and I had the time!
I had my 1st bowel movement the day after surgery, which was a Tuesday and I had actually gone into the bathroom to pee and ended up having a BM. It was pain free! I couldn't believe it! I have had a BM every morning since the surgery. I am hoping I have trained myself to go early in the am when I 1st get up in the morning. I still get in the tub immediately following the BM but I haven't had one painful, or straining BM. I also no longer sit on the stool, I squat and I feel this has also really helped!
I am still taking the pills, never did have to take any of the pain medication. I am also still keeping with a soft diet and lots of water. I hope this helps someone out there that is questioning the surgery as I was also considering cancelling it, but am so happy it was pain free.
I am still making a slow but definite recovery from my surgery. Week 11 showed a major improvement. I'm now in week 14 and had a second bowel movement today with little soreness afterwards. I still try to keep bowel movements to the bare minimum and am quite happy not to have one for 24 hours +.
my husband had surgery last week. he has wanted to die. the pain is so bad after bms .ive had him to er and they catherised him to pee. then he got uranery infection. ran fever of 103.8 he screams when he goes to bathroom weve done everything to stop that pain his pain pills make him sick. his lost 15 lbs. in 2 weeks. hs is a very strong man never has pain or sick. we have been married 43 yrs. and ive seen him cry 2 times and that was deaths of his parent. but he cries with this pain and bites down on rags tell he gets threw having a bowel movement the its 3 to 4 hrs of pain lord there should be some kind of medication that deadens the area so there is no pain.if anyone has a answer for this because the dr. just said that's normal lord that much pain is not normal..

good luck with you and love ones I would never had this surgery
I has a hemorrhoidectomy on Tuesday 6/11/13. I had internal level 4 boggy hemorrhoids that had been protruding externally for years. For those of you wondering, level 4 is the worst it can get. My doctor did an excellent job, but no matter how great your surgeon is there will be pain and lots of it. Hot showers and sitz baths, wet wipe after each bowel movement, loose cotton clothing, lay down instead of sitting as often as possible, avoid driving for as long as possible (uses lower body muscles), tons of water, prune juice, fiber, and careful eating (your stool needs to be as soft as possible without being diarrhea); all of these things help to manage the pain. You must rest and stay relaxed. If you insist on resuming your normal physical activities right away your are self-inflicting pain and in danger of your hemorrhoids returning. This may sound weird or make people uncomfortable but urinating while standing up in the shower is much easier and less painful whenever possible for the first week or two. I am breastfeeding so I alternate Tylenol 3 with regular 500mg Tylenol. So far things are okay. There is no way to stop the pain. You have to put your big boy pants on and ride it out. Standard recovery takes best case 2 weeks - worst case 6 weeks depending on the extent of your hemorrhoids and the type of procedure done.
