Glad I found these posts.  There are a lot of horror stories out there.

I had my vasectomy on 12/7.  Its been about 3.5 weeks.  I had the no scalpel technique.  Was surprised at how easy the surgery was.  No pain at all.  Stayed inactive x 48 hours, then got back to being a normal father (picking up crying 2.5 year old, etc).  I would recommend not lifting anything at all for a week (I was told 48-72 hours, but I wouldn't push it).  I started having some pain on Day 5.  Burning sensation in groin and some cramping like pain in my lower abdomen.  I was having pain in a cyst that I had above the left testicle (prior to the operation).  MD felt I might have an infection and he prescribed an antibiotic.  The antibiotic eliminated the groin pain and the stomach pain.  Still had the cyst pain and the feeling of pressure in the lower testicle.  Made it really difficult to walk unless my boxer briefs were positioned perfectly (too lose, painful...to tight, painful).  I was prescribed a different antibiotic and that relieved the testicle pain.  I'm not sure if I had an infection or if the anti-inflammatory properties of the antibiotics helped.

Since masterbating a few times, the groin pain and the lower abdomen pain is back.  Its very dull.  I get occasional testicle pain (and pain in the cyst) on occasion (primarily with laying down on my side and "squeezing" the area between my thighs).  It does seem to be getting better.

I'm relieved to see a lot of people having the tenderness and some pain issues that subsided after 2-3 months.  I can live with another month or two of this.  Most of the stuff you see online will scare you into thinking your life is over.  While I feel for those people, I enjoy reading about those that had some unusual pain for a month or two and then got better.

Hello Fellas. I am 47 and had mine done 3 days ago. Not too bad. I think it was mostly psychological while waiting. I did the local numbing and stayed awake while me and the Doc talked about sports. The tugging and the needle was all I felt. One thing I did not know is that it is done on the right and the left. That was a shock to me. I drove myself home. The girlfriend waited on me hand and foot although I did attempt to do things on my own. I got yelled at for that. Mostly stayed on the couch with an ice pack and watched TV. Gets boring after a while and you have to do something.

The only feeling I have at this point is discomfort. It feels like I had work done. Feels like very mild cramping and tugging. Nothing serious.

So far so good. I will keep the area clean and ice hear and there. I will be back to my exercise and routine soon. No need to push it too much and cause unneeded complications.

What is the non insurance cost of these procedures?

Has your abdomen pain gone away? I've had pretty bad pain for 3 weeks. Went to doc and got cipro. I'm really hoping this works cuz I havnt been able to go back to work. My job is very physical so its out of the question. Wondering if yours is better?

I just had a vasectomy a week ago. After 24 hours, I developed a lot of bruising. However, what really has been tough is that since the surgery, right below the incision, I have a walnut sized ball that hurts when touched. I went back and had a follow-up with my doc and he said that it wasn't infected and that I should wait a week and it should be better. I'm hoping that is the case. This surgery definitely isn't trivial.

Everyone's experience is different.   Some have made it back to the gym in three days (not me).

I am 9 weeks post-surgery, still wearing a jockstrap every day (if I don't, within a few hours it aches like I was kicked in the balls, and that then lasts for days).  I haven't been able to get back to exercising, I have gained 10 lbs.   I've managed sex a few times, but the soreness takes away a lot of the stimulation.  There is a "knot" where the incision was, still waiting for that to recede more.

I could feel the cutting several times during the surgery, after which I got 2-3 extra injections of anaesthetic.  Was still oozing blood from the incision 3 weeks later.  I did all the icing, rest, etc. that was recommended, and then some.

I'll probably feel much better in a month or two but this  has definitely not turned out to be as trivial a procedure as was advertised.  I have a busy job, four kids and the recurrent pain has made managing everything very difficult.  I wish others much quicker recovery.

Had mine done on 1/11, single incision, single stitch.  The procedure itself isn't that painful, but its uncomfortable due to the tugging.  If you visualize it or watch, you will not be in a good place.  It doesn't take long, 10 minutes for mine.  The local wears off on the way home, so get your meds quickly.  I took a small oxycodone/tylenol mix prescribed.  TAKE IT EASY for 3 or 4 days, no lifting of anything.  Lay in bed, ice with peas.  If you don't, you will be in pain by day 4.  I didn't take it easy, lifted my kids a few times, moved around.  My sack hurt and my lower abdomen hurt until about day 9.  Also the tight underwear helps, but when you move from a still position, it is sore. Finally today at day 10 and 11 I feel better, no pain anymore.  Still have a small scab from the incision sight, but it doesn't hurt and is getting smaller.  I agree everyone is different.  I have had many friends get the procedure done and everyone has a slightly different story.

Went in at 7:15am my doc gave me a shot of valium in the arm and within 15 seconds it was kicking in. He said I would feel some pricks from the lidacane but I didnt feel anything. The valium injection works! Insist on it. The assistant kept my mind busy asking me about my kids and work. Next thing I knew the doc was putting some padding on each side and he was done. I didn't feel anything, NOTHING! Pulled my pants back up and they had to help me off the table and into a wheelchair because the valium had me kinda loopy. I was out of the office by 8:15. Went home and put on a ice pack and then started a dvd. I didnt even make it past the previews, I was out and woke up about 2 hours later. I chznged the ice packs every 20-30 minutes on/off for the rest of the day. Next day I woke up and could barely tell anything had been done except for a few stitches on each side. Took the next few days easy and all was well.

I'm 39 and had my vascetomy Thursday morning - its now Saturday morning. Slight discomfort when the local anesthia gets injected, and then you can feel the doctors working. Its hardly bad unless you are a total wuss. I put on my iPod and was able to block out alot of it - but it was no more than 15 min - maybe closer to 10. The feeling afterwards is one of blue-balls - kind of heavy & large. But I truly have rested for the past 2 days and have consistently iced. The only meds I've taken are the antibiotics - no pain meds, and not even Tylenol. I have no bruising. I removed the bandaid last night and there are 2 little dots where the stitches are. I read alot of exaggeration below, but there are many sound responses. Don't be nervous; you'll be fine.

I have some advice for people post-op on the icing based on my experience 80 hours post-op..  I consulted with two doctors, one believed in Ice and one did not. For me I found that I was the most comfortable when I put on a pair of boxers, then put chopped ice in a double bags, then put on a pair of boxer-briefs and kept the ice low on the scrotal area over the boxers but under the briefs. This does a couple things:

1. It seems like the natural cold constriction by the presence of the ice causes the scrotum to suck into the body creating the most natural form of containment. Keeping the scrotum cold, but not painfully cold, has the best mix of comfort and containment.

2. Tight briefs with no ice keep things compressed pressed, but a relaxed scrotum still shifts around and causes pain within the first 72 hours in my experience.

3. By keeping the ice contained by the briefs, you are able to point your penis up so you don't make it uncomfortably cold. It doesn't have to suffer too...

4. Boxer briefs contain the ice and prevent it from falling down your legs or applying too much pressure such that holding the ice pack to the body.

At first I used chopped ice in the blender because chunks of ice were uncomfortable, but then I realized that just keeping it in that area will cause the scrotum to contract and provide comfort. Now I just put un-chopped ice in the blender, double zip-lock it and put it in my "crotch pouch" created by the boxer briefs over my regular boxers..

So far so good..

Had the Procedure on Friday morning. Rested until Sunday and it is now Tuesday.  Wasn't supposed to do any lifting, but with 4 kids, that didn't work out too well.  Concentrated on helping with the infant and let my wife deal with the others.  So far am in a little discomfort sitting for long periods at a desk.  Walking and sleeping are no problem.  I watched the procedure and while I knew when the pain should have been coming, I felt only the initial numming shots.  I have a little bruising, but nothing to cause concern and while I did take the pills the doc prescribed, I only used them for 48 hours.  No need to try and be a trooper when it involves pain in the groin.  Ice is your friend for the first 48+ but isn't necessary after that.

I had my done Jan 25/13. The procedure is not too bad and was done in about 20-25 mins. To recover smoothly just follow instructions, Ice as much as possible within first 24hrs. you may get a blood clot felt hardness above right or left testicle but that will go away on its own. I felt much better about a week later, little soreness but no uncomfortable pain. I was worried when I did mine but sure glad I did it everything is progressing nicely.

I forgot to mention, get yourself some jockstrap, it will help immensisly to ease discomfort and hold testicles nicely from rubbing against your legs causing soreness.. trust me you will be glad you got one.
