I have been a victim of Bell's palsy for the past 3 years. I am still unable to raise my right eyebrow. My eye waters when I read to my students or eat. I am able to drink with slipping it all over myself. Here are the positives: I am able to close my right eye. I still have a problem with my smile, but at least I am able to pronounce most words when I read to my students.
I have to explain my condition to people, or they think I had a stroke. I am aware that I may be prone to repeat episodes which I pray will not occur. My grandson is use to my condition so it's doesn't bother him.
My attack occurred on a Saturday, and I was back in my classroom on Monday. I did miss a few hours going to the neurologist and eye doctor. I wore sunglasses for the glare from the lights. I used artificial tears for the dryness. I was lucky I didn't drool, but I was unable to drink from a can or straw for a while.
We can survive our visit with Bell's Palsy.

I too have Bell's Palsy I developed it a week and a half after giving birth to my fourth child. I have been on prednisone for 3 days and and I was completely numb on the right side of my face but I am slowly starting to feel tingling in my lips and my eye is starting to close more I have to say it is really frustrating to deal with but I deal with it ;-) I think what makes it the hardest to deal with is my husband how enjoys making fun of me... >:(

I will say to most of you that it is hard thing to deal with. I've had this problem for 14 years. It started off waking up like every one else with all the symptoms. Spent weka seeing some of the nest doctors, was prodded and poked. Took all of the medications prescribed, but nothing worked. Over the years I have gotten over the constant water eye, not being able to control the left side of my mouth and eye. Hate take pictures because I cannot adjust my face the right way. It is depressing but I got over it. Everyone is talking about weeks, try years. I've been in the military for over 20 years and have instructed soldiers and did all the same things that were need for me to do. So please do not let a few days or weeks get you down.

On May 17 2010 I was on holiday in New Zealand and was struck with Bells Palsy , it was a serious case that affected my right side of the face it took 6 months for my face to get straight though I did not see any good neurologist , just an ENT Specialist who claimed it wa his expertise , I come from Qatar and all hospitals there are bloodsucking greedy businesses so most of us avoid them !
On December 18 2010 , I was in in Paris , and got struck again on the left side , this time I got proper treatment , I am now two weeks in the attack and I can feel much improvement in speech control , I am hopeful that I can regain most of my facial muscle control , I am 44 years old and a diabetic .

Hello - I am a 48 year old married woman and mother to 4 pre-teen/teenagers. I was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy on Sunday after experiencing a few days of worsening conditions. I went to the neurologist yesterday (Wednesday) and it appears that it is a wait and see game. I have a suppressed immune system (meds for arthritis aren't helping as well) so recovery may take me a little bit longer than the average Joe. I am a tutor/teacher and refuse to hide away until this is resolved. It has only been 5 days since the diagnosis and I haven't seen improvement other than the swelling has gone down. I am taking prednisone and valtrex. I take a multi-vitamin that includes the 100% daily allowance of B12 so at this point I am going on faith that things will improve and I won't be the 10% or so that never improves.
I have read numerous posts about people being afflicted two or three times with Bell's. I explained my concern to the neurologist and he said if it I had another bout with it that there is something else going on, an underlying cause that needs to be addressed. Hopefully all of you multiple sufferers have been checked out extensively.
It's frustrating to have this but not the end of the word. Thankfully, I am not an overly vain person and I tend to use humor to get through.

you must go to the hospital and they will give you a steroid tablet that you have to eat for ten days and it will slightly go better.firstly the eye will get fixed so then you could close it properly and then your mouth and then your cheeks. bells palsy takes about 2-3 months to get better but if its serious danger and its slightly getting better, it will take 1 year. When you have bells palsy you will have to wear a eye patch so no dust getts in and yuo will tend to close or rub your eye when you are outside when the wind is blowing and this will lead you to the opticians so they give you tinted glasses so the wind won't go in your eye. Once i had it and my cousin but all i did was take the steroid and ate chewing gum to exersize the face so it won't stay like a funny face for a long time. Best of luck with you bells palsy!!!

Hi, I am a 16 year old girl. I have had bells palsy for 6 days now. I got bells palsy after having a cold, and an ear infection which I still have. I cannot close my right eye properly, move my right eyebrow or move the right side of my mouth. Luckily I believe I have fairly mild symptoms. I am currently on steroids, antivirul tablets, antibiotics and eye drops which I believe are helping, although after the first couple of days of taking them I felt very low, tired, weary, lost my appetite and experienced quite bad stomach cramps. However I am noticing very slight improvements, and can now move my eyebrow slightly move than I could, shut my eye although not squint. I have been trying to rest lots and do facial exercises to help the movement of my face. I am hoping it will improve soon. I have a brilliant family, boyfriend and friends around me so I know its not the end of the world and many people are much worse off than me.

I have had bells palsey eight times since I was three years old. It doesn't get any easier each time. I am on day 10 of this current roccurance and it took me a while to feel comfortable in public. I work as a nurse with children and I know that I have to still be a good example for them. Lord knows they deal with a lot worse, BUT not everyone is able to "suck it up" or move on in the same way. No one should ever judge anyone else for feeling scared or for feeling embarrassed for the way they look. It takes each person time to feel comfortable in their own new situation. I have had this last up to 1 year and recovered to only about 70% on the one side. I have had this 6 times on the right and 2 times on the left. There has never been a known cause for my reoccurences. My advice to all of you is to take it one day at a time and find someone who you can talk to so you don't go crazy. I had to start a new job looking like this and it was very hard to feel like I was being taken seriously. This is not exactly the first impression that I wanted to make, but I know I will get through this. I have done it 7 other times!!!!!!
Thanks and good luck to all.

I have had bells palsy for 18 years. I am 36 and I got it at 18. It was really hard to cope with. I am significantly better than when it first happened. I can eat and drink fine. My smile is a smirk and every time I blink the corner of my mouth pulls-making me have a funny twitch. I really hate video and photos of myself. The thing is that only my really old friends and my family even knew me when I looked "right". I have a handsome husband, two adorable children. I've had tons of customer service jobs and even some sort of high profile jobs. I am confident about myself which is more than I could say as a teenager before this happened. People think I'm pretty. I sometimes think so too. I don't even think about it most days. Lately though I have been thinking and wishing I could fix it still. I just wonder if there is anything that can be done at this point. I don't have any advice except that life goes on and can be wonderful even if you aren't perfect.

I've had Bells Palsy for over 6 weeks now, and, however much I want it to go away each morning I wake up, I know that it won't happen quickly. Thankfully, being at school, my teachers' and friends' have been very supportive - so, to all the people like me; don't give up hope!

I am 20 years old and I had bells palsy. I was worried about how long it was going to take me to recover too! But I didn't really concentrate on it or worry about it, maybe because mine was not that bad. I went to the doctors as soon i felt that i could not move the right side of my face they gave me so much medication. I had to take medication every three hours. It has been 3 weeks now and you can barely tell i have bells palsy the only thing is the right side of my smile is just slightly smaller then my left. I think the best way to recover is to not worry about it. Sure you get questions about what happen to your face but they are your friends and family they love you no matter what.

Well I'm 18 years old and just started on the course of steroids to help with Bell's Palsy. I'm being very positive about the whole situation and laughing it off even though at this age i'm very self consious with how i look. I am being brave with the situation even though reading some of these comments and seeing that it is taking months to help some of the symptoms it even slightly is worrying me but I just have to deal with it and live my life.
