I have runner's knees. My doctor pushed for me to get surgery or hydrocortisone shots to make the swelling and pain go away. Regardless of the expenses, which i'm more than sure are extreme, i'm so glad I looked into other options. Yoga has really helped my joints, and releasing stress in healthy ways has also taken the negative energy out of that area. Don't really have problems with my knees anymore.

Yup. Cortisone shot in my shoulder on 10/15/10, $204 for the procedure, $40 for the "juice". Flabbergasted at price for something that took less than one minute in an exam room. Medical code called it arthrocentesis/aspiration, which it certainly was not!

I had a rotator cuff shoulder shot, fortunately my UCSD health fee covered it. I would have to agree it is the procedure itself that it is costly and not the steroid injection.

Never have one at the hospital find a Dr. that will do them in his office. There is more pain but I would rather take the pain rather than paying some outragous price, my first ones I had at hospital cost $4000 at his office about $350.

I work in a doctors office and I have to say that yes we do charge alot for the shot, but you have to remember that to buy these shots costs us money, and the office visit is time to the doctors plus we hardly get any reimbursement from the Insurance Companies that is why we raise the price so high to send to the Insurance to try to make up for the loss that we are recieving. Especially from Medicare. >;) >;)

allyn,
It may honestly be cheaper for you since you do not have health insurance. In February of this year I had a cortisone shot in my si joint. It helped tremendously and has lasted about four months, but when I got the bills for the procedure I about s**t and fell back in it. I balked at other prices I saw on this thread. If I only had to pay $300 I'd be thrilled. The bill from the doctor alone was $816. The bill for usage of the hospital facilities, utensils, ect. was $846. I have to eat $110 from the first bill and $533 from the second. $1700ish for a shot that took less than 15 minutes is absurd. :'( |-O :-@ :'( :-@ >;) le flame flame flame

Good luck and all the best,

I just checked my insurance records, I had the injection in my lower back,  the Outpatient surgery center charged 1605.65 and the Dr. charged 786.00

Seems like too much for a 30 second procedure.

Yes it was. Arthrocentesis is placing instrument(s) within a joint space, which is certainly was.

Initially I was pleased to see that two cortisone injections for my carpal tunnel syndrome were billed at only $21.50 each (March 2012). But I also got separate charges for two surgeries @ $225. I called the doctor's billing department to say there was a mistake since I didn't have surgery. They explained that that the charge code for administering the shots has the same code as 'Surgery' and the cost was correct. Now I see that compared to some of the posters, the charges for my shots were practically bargain basement.

But $225 to administer a shot? What a farce.

There should never be pain with a cortisone shot. If it isn't done automatically, ask your doctor to load the front end with a little Lidocaine (or whatever it is they use to numb the area) and you won't feel anything beyond the initial prick of the needle.
