Hello all,

I was on Prozac about 8 years, Started to gain weight, well the Dr informed me it was hormones, weight gain was 25- lbs; wow!!! ; however I was always thin in my 20's 100-105; in the first 5 years of the thirties was avg, 110-115; weight staring coming on, Had a hysterectomy and about anothther 10 more lbs... Dr, said you are older that what happens.!
Well I thought this is crazy, I exercise 3-4 times a week watch what I eat.. a lot small meal, fruit ,Veg, How could I be gaining weight??
My prozac dose was 20mg, then increase to 2x times a day = 40mg,.. Went to a new Dr. he said that my does was to low, if you increase the dosage you will lose weight, so I went to 60 mg a day, that seemed to work and I lossed about 15lbs of weight. Went to the Dr for another check up, and the Dr said to jump my metabolism to lose more weight . I needed to take 80 mg a day; 40mg in am and 40mg in the evening..

Well I lost 30 lbs in about 3 months; Wow!! he said studies have shown taking Prozac at a higher dose will aid in weight loss! I had to still follow an exercise program and low calorie meal plan...

I was thrilled, now the kicker: I got off the Prozac, Jan 12,2010 and in one month I gained 10 lbs!!! That's a lot in 4 weeks, I eating a low calorie diet still working out 3x4 times week.. this is crazy!!
Has any one else experienced this problem. Any feed back would be great!!

Afraid to get back on Prozac, I could gain more weight..

Hello everyone and thanks for sharing, I started on anti-anxiety and anti-depressants in1987. My first Dr. said that I would gain some weight, and I had always been thin so I really did'nt take in to heart as much. When I took the medication it felt really alot better, but as she said, I went from a size 5 to a size 11 in 3 weeks./I was and am always hungrey. It's been over 30 years on med's. No one ever suggests for me to go off them. I quit smoking, them quit the nic. gum and now i'm bigger then ever. (I can relate to the person who said the dr. said "there is no weight gain", because I had one of those as well/they lie and i would rather have a dr. be honest then to lie to me. I wish I had a support group to help. Thanks for listening

I'm really glad I found this website. I have gained 20 pounds since I started taking prozac about 1.5 years ago. Even with a very low dosage (20 mg/day) I have still been gaining! Dieting and exercizing have not helped at all-- I am healthier but still carrying extra pudge. The weight gain is making me more depressed than I was before I went on Prozac! When I mentioned this to my doctor, he said he was surprised, because large doses of Prozac are used for weight LOSS.
Also, my husband is on Lexpro and has gained a lot of weight as well!

Hi Sox27. I'm sorry I've just seen your post which is a year old now but I wanted to ask if you are still on any antidepressents and if you've lost the weight you gained from them. I'm just coming off Aropax after 8 years of being on them and I can't wait! I gained 15kg and I used to be nice and slim always now i have a podgy tummy, heavy legs and getting fat arms! Yuk. I'm going through the horrible withdrawals such as pins and needles in my hands, diahorea, headaches, irritability, crying, being depressed, memory loss, etc. for these reasons alone I can't wait to get off these tablets. If they can do this to you, I can't imagine the long term bad effects on the body that you don't know about. I also am very annoyed how the Dr's will not admit the weight gain is caused by these antidepressant medications. I told my doctor I was putting on weight after about 3 mths of being on them and she told me it was not caused by the meds!!!!! I'm so mad about this! Anyway I'd love to hear if you or anyone has lost the weight after going off antidepressents! Thx Sam

I have been on cipralex for the last 2 years, there was a small weight gain for the first year and a half of about 15 pounds, my doctor then decided to increase dose to 20 mg, wham within 2 months there is another 20 pounds. I had started to ween off in December and have now had a week of being off this horrible medicine. My doctor admitted that he had no idea of side effects and my main reason was anxiety attacks that i would get.. He went on and googled and was in shock that he prescribed it to me.. He said to try Wellbutrin, i tried for a few days and i know it takes time for anything to set in, but i had the worst vertigo in the world. so i have been completey drug free since Thursday, feeling good that i have decided to take back my life. I am taking tons of vitamins especially vit D and drinking water by the gallon. I never had depression issues but this weight gain has brought that out.. Oh how I wish i never would have started this nightmare.. I am glad for sites like this because you do feel you are alone, now i know i am not.. Each day is a new Day:)

Just want to pop down my experience with Cipralex and weight gain. Cipralex has caused my heart rate to drop to 48-54 bpm at resting heart rate. Heart rate and metabolosm are linked  ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** web addresses not allowed***

and therefore I have also gained weight and found it harder to shift. Since finding out it lowers my heart rate I am finally coming off cipralex. However, I did come off it whilst pregnant and my heart rate was a normal healthy rate and I lost a stone back to my normal weight even though I was pregnant and scoffing away. Cipralex did help initially but it's time for my body to be it's natural self again. Hope this helps. All my info is from my personal experience and tracking of cipralex :-) Best wishes

I started Cirolax in December 2010 at 10 mg and then 6 months later my dosage increased to 20 mg. Since December 2010 I gained 25 lbs. I count what I eat and burned between 350 to 450 calories a day with running and cycling. I haven't lost anything. In 2008 I started weight watcher and lost close to 40 lbs in 5 months. This time I'm doing all the right thing and nothing is coming off. I am considering to ween my self off the meds under my doctor's supervision and hope that the pounds will start to come off.

I gained 40 lbs being on anti-depressants. I din't feel depressed but was having anxiety. Well NOW I am REALLY depressed cuz now I'm fat on top of everything else! I actually went to the doc bc I was having trouble sleeping.

It has to be the anti depressants causing the weight gain. I have been on prozac for 6 months with combined with birth control (yasmin) to manage my anxiety. I have gained over 10 lbs which is a lot as I'm only 5 feet tall. I have been dieting and training very hard for my upcoming triathlon and still the weight will not shift.

I've decided to come off the Prozac as the weight is becoming too much to carry. I will try other methods to control my anziety.

I am really comforted by all the comments related to weight gain and anti-depressants. I have been on Cipralex for a number of years - as well as its' predecessor Celexa. I never really took any great notice of the weight gain and that it might be as a consequence of anti-depressants. I was totally focused ont he mental benefits derived, and there is no doubt they are there. Then, nearly two years ago I went through quite a life change on many levels - but continued with the anti-depressants. Frankly, I was really fearful of giving them up and didn't want to go back to the mental state I was in before.  About a month ago I decided that I felt capable of trying to reduce my anti-depressant intake, and gradually get off them altogether using  my will power to help me keep myself under control.

By this time I knew I was about 30 lbs overweight - about 220 instead of about 190. It never did make me tie the anti-depressants to the weight issue until a couple of days ago when my wife noted I had lost weight. That really puzzled me because I had not been trying anything diffeent than the usual things to keep my weight under some control. Then it twigged - the only thing I have really changed was to are reduce my anti-depressants to about a third of where I was. So is that it? I think it may be!

I have been on Ciprolex for close to three years, Last year between Janurary and June I gained 15 lbs.  I didn't change my diet.  I exercise three times a week, and I run after four young children every day.  I believe it is from the medication.  I have started to ween off of it to see if the extra weight comes off.  I am nervouse about the side effects, but nothing can be more depressing than the extra pounds I can't seem to shed.
