HI, I have arm lymphadema swelling developed after breast cancer surgery. I go regularly to drainage, but it will take some time until it is al cleaned out. What can be done to reduce lymphadema swelling?

Breas cancer surgery can include the removal of lymph nodes from under the arm. This results in destroying lymphatic vessels, and they become blocked, so the lymph fluids is not flowing out of the tissues and can cause swelling. Radiation therapy additionaly increases risk for developing lymphadema. Always use another arm to draw blood, take your blood pressure, give injections or start an IV. Don’t overuse that arm and avoid any activity that could lead to infection. Treatment includes manual lymphatic drainage (massage), exercise (to stimulate flow of lympha and blood)and compression bandaging.

I expected to get more information when one of the underlined topics was entered. Did not expect to get a web site for how to get rid of belly fat, when I needed to learn about exercise for lymphadema.

I am the same way. I am 36 and have primary lymphadema. I have had it since birth, but it was not chronic until about 2 years ago when the swelling just stopped going down. I think my weight is to blame but exercise is hard with this problem. I have constant swelling and now am getting pain down the side of my leg. I don't know what to do anymore.

I developed Lymphadema 3 yrs ago after having surgery on my right leg. I searched endlessly for a cure...but as we all know..there is no cure for lymphadema. It took some doing, but I located a website called lympha-press.com which had a machine that I felt would help. Problem was, you had to have a prescription for it AND find a place that carried them. I emailed the website and they gave me a location close to me, so I talked to my MD about giving me a prescription. She wasn't aware that these machines were available, which I found a little strange. But..she did give me a prescription and it helps, as long as you use it daily and for an hour or 2 a day. Of course, it's hard to be still that long! Also, the instructor told me that although this machine would massage the fluid out of my leg, I needed to work to expel it from my body...WELL GREAT!!! SO.....I sought out another avenue in which I found a Vibration Machine. I saw it on 60 minutes one night and found that some Day Spas are using them. They also said Madonna uses one daily. So, I found one on the internet and have been using it for 4 weeks now. I try to use it 2 -4 times a day at 10 minute sessions. I can really see a difference in my leg now! I actually went out the other day without a compression garment under my jogging suit! I also use a CHI Machine that seems to help expel the fluid also. It doesn't do much good to get it out of your body if you can't do something to keep it out and this Vibration and Chi Machine does the job! I hope this helps some of you find relief as I have found! GOOD LUCK!! :)

I have lymphedema in my left leg, and have for almost 3 years, due to ACL and a break. I was told that I would have to wear the socks for the rest of my life - and we all know how onvenient those are! I just happen to work in a Mattress Store and we sell adjustable base beds. What these do for your lower extremity lymph problem, is eliminate on a daily basis. I sleep with my feet up at a slight angle, this causes the swelling to drain back down. The downfall of this is that on bad days I get up sometimes 3 times a night to go to the restroom. I have not had any therapy or wore the socks since 7/07 when I bought the bed ~ now a year and a half later.
