Hello, I have a 23 year old son who is type 1 diabetic. He has been diabetic since the age of 9. He follows his diet and vigorously exercises every day, so he is a healthy boy from my standpoint. He does get aggressive at times. When he comes to my house for instance, he will be fine then all of a sudden he get really mean. I don't think he really knows he is but it comes on so suddenly, I have reason to believe that he may be becoming hypoglycemic at this time? He is also very agitated and gets up and moves around alot and fidgety. I am worried about him. Does anyone know if this is truly hypoglycemia or does he have some other problem totally different from being diabetic. What should I do about it? I have tried offering him orange juice when he has these episodes but he refuses it because he is ranting and raving at this point. If I could get him to drink something, I think he would have a change in behavior. Any suggestions on how to handle this? I have talked to him about it and he is aware of it but he knows how he can get too.
Hello Guest! Maybe you can offer him a snack when he comes to your house. That will keep him from going hypoglycemic when he is visited. This will confirm if it is indeed hypoglycemia if he doesn't have an episode after a snack at your house. You then also would not have to try to get him to eat or drink something while he is experiencing agitation with it. It is best to prevent it rather than treat it.
Has any of our forum readers have a loved one or patient perhaps that gets aggressive with hypoglycemia?
