Hi, I am a 26 year old African American female, and have the same problem. I had been on depo twice before but only for a year each time. This last time, I was on depo for three years. It wasnt until the two and a half year mark that I noticed my hair was thinning out in the middle. Eventually by the three year mark, I was pretty much bald in the middle except for a little fuzz. At first I thought it was stress, until i did research on the shot (since it was the only other variable). Needless to say, I got my LAST shot June 2012, I cut my hair (short cut), and I have tried everything under the sun.... and here it is July 2013 and that spot will not grow back. The rest of my hair around it has grown but not the spot in the middle.

I'm 16, African American, abd once had long black thick hair. I recently got on the shot about two months ago, my doctor didn't warn me about the hair loss either but in the 2 months I have lost half of my hair and it's coming out by the follicle.. I don't know what to do. I wish I could go back

I started on the DEPO in April 2011(simply because I didnt want a period) and although I didn't experience hair loss, my hair barely grew a couple of inches the entire first year. I took my self off about six months ago (April 2013)and my hair has not began to grow yet, BUT a week ago I began taking prenatal pills and Hair, Nail, Skin pills to see if it will spark growth. My hair normally grows about a 1/2 inch a month but fooling with this DEPO shot it took me 29 months to grow 5.5 to 6 inches of hair. Im too thru with this DEPO. I cant say how long it will take to be back normal.

Hi Shausty,

I can relate. I have experienced hair loss as well. It is upsetting. I am approaching the two month mark of being affected by the Depo-Provera shot. I am due for my second shot during the first week of January and I don't want to have a second injection. I also experienced extreme depression which does not help my anemia and desire to seek employment. Needless to say, this sacrifice has been unappreciated by others. It has been taken for granted and I don't want to take this shot again anytime, soon.

Yep it will come back!!! I guess I didn't realize how much I lost because I have baby hair spouting all over the top of my head. I thought it may have been damaged but my hair dresser said it was all new hair be no breaks! I am 7 months off of depo and finally through most of the after depo hell. All I have to say is exercise eat healthy and revolve your life around cleansing your liver! Your liver helps get this poison out of your system!!

I have been on the depo shot for 4 years. I've experience a lot of hair thining. My hair wasnt very thick to begin with but once I noticed it get thinner and it wasn't growing, I knew there was a problem. I've also noticed how tired I am. I sleep a lot as it is but it just seems like I never get enough sleep. The weight gain was a lot of my issue with the depo as well. I've gained probably 30 pounds since I started the shot. I would never recommend the shot to anyone. I also haven't had a period in 4 years. I'm just now starting the notice all the changes.

I have had one shot and already know that I will not be getting a second! My hair is also falling out. I'm 52 and was put on it because I have very heavy periods and I'm now on Warfrine (a blood thinner) for blood clots in my lungs. I was never told of this side effect. I wish I would have been! I would have picked a different route! Good luck to all of you young girls! I pray our hair comes back!

Hopefully everybody can read this I'm 37 years old and I started taking the depo shot when I was 19! Long ass time. I had quit drinking and usually bling my moods and being a total b***h on alcohol but I stopped drinking for over 3 years now and I was still being a b***h I realized it was the shot that was making me be an a****** lol lol so I've been off two shots in September of 2015. I used to have very thick beautiful hair and it started falling out at the beginning of this year!! It's not so bad to the point where I almost look like the Crypt Keeper lol not so funny but I try to make light of things. I started taking biotin and using Nioxin for noticeably thinning hair and my hair is now starting to grow back and looking somewhat back to normal but it's been about a year before my hair started to grow out and stop falling out it just now stopped falling out for the most part. The depo shot is the devil and had I known what it was going to do with me I would have found a different method. I do now use an IUD non hormonal! Because the hormones in the depo shot is what caused me to be a b***h the IUD you don't have to worry about that for 10 years if you get the non hormonal kind which I would recommend so that you don't have mood swings and be a constant b***h lol. There are no side effects to the IUD except for some minor details here and there but everything comes with a chance in life. I hope this is helpful and for anybody who's thinking about to get on this god awful shot the depo stay the hell away from it! Pass it on!
