Has this ever happened to anyone? Have you ever threw up in your sleep? Last night, I suddenly woke up choking on the vomit in my throat. I also had a mouthful of it. I was so scared that I couldn't sleep again and I stayed awake till morning. Now I'm so tired and sleepy. I don't know what this could be. I don't eat heavy meals before bed, I don't even eat after 6 PM. I don't remember last time when I felt sick or having urge to vomit. I don't have any health problems with my stomach. This happened out of nowhere and I'm so scared to go to sleep tonight. I'm afraid that I may choke in my sleep. I washed my mouth thoroughly but I could still feel taste and smell of the vomit. Yuck! Has anyone else had this problem? What could cause vomiting in your sleep?

Hello,

you didn't say how old you are, or whether you are male or female, so it's hard to say exactly what might be the reason. Obviously, the most common reason why vomiting in sleep happens is eating or drinking something that’s spoiled or you’re allergic to.

But if it helps you calm down a bit, people sometimes can vomit while they're asleep (without it including any alcohol drinking). As you said yourself, it can happen to people suffering from stomach problems like acid reflux, GERD or gallbladder problems. Women can experience this unpleasant symptom during first months of pregnancy.

However, there are some conditions like hiatal hernia that you might not have linked with common stomach problems like heartburn, so that’s why I’d definitely recommend you to try to see at least a general physician.
