An anal fissure is a crack or tear in the skin of the anal canal. Anal fissures may be noticed by bright red anal bleeding on the toilet paper, sometimes in the toilet. If acute they may cause severe periodic pain after defecation [1] but with chronic fissures pain intensity is often less. Anal fissures usually extend from the anal opening and are usually located posteriorly in the midline, probably because of the relatively unsupported nature of the anal wall in that location. Fissure depth may be superficial or sometimes down to the underlying sphincter muscle.

I just came to investigate, because I just took a sh*t and realized I was bleeding. I PMS'd a week and a half ago, so it isn't that. There's no blood in my panties. Hoping it's nothing serious.

Wiping yourself and finding bright red blood on the toilet paper is usually a sign of a fissure(simply a small tear) from straining too hard. Or it could be a hemmoroid, either way there is nothing to worry about. However if you are bleeding from the rectum constantly, or if the stools look like coffee grounds, you need to see a physician ASAP. This may indicate some internal lower bowel bleeding-which can be corrected. Bright red blood spotting is not as serious as darker, older blood mixed INSIDE of the stool. For the young girls who wrote about bleeding and being scared, why can't you tell your parents?

I just had a baby a month ago and noticed blood when I poop yesterday and today. When I had my baby, they told me I had a slight case of hemorrhoids and that it should go away by taking a stool softener which I took like the first two weeks and it helped but I stopped about 4 weeks ago and now Im heading to the ER because I do not need to have any prolonged issues that are caused because I havent taken care of it or myself. I can only wonder what Im going to do to fix this.... ! %-)

My advice would be to go to the doctor- there is no reason to be scared unless your putting foreign objects up your anal canal/ may potentially have a hemorrhoid.

Bright red blood from the rectum is usually no big deal, so long as it's not in large quantity and is associated with a bowel movement. Normally this is from straining (which can cause hemorrhoids) and will self-resolve without medical attention.
More fiber in your diet among other dietary changes can help alleviate this, as well as drinking plenty of fluids and not rushing or straining to void your bowels.
"Old" (as opposed to fresh) looking blood or stools that look like coffee grounds are a different story, but that's not the topic being discussed here.
If it doesn't remedy itself or you are concerned about it, see a physician or nurse in person for an examination.
