My son was born with a hole near his eye, never had a discharge or tears coming out of it. He is now 5 year-old, and 2 days ago, the hole started to get red and with discharge on day 1. Day 2: discharge continue, swollen and red line ran crossing his eyelid connecting the hole to the lacrimal gland. He reacted well to antibiotic. But what would be the options to avoid getting infections? What are the risks of an infection so close to the eye? What kind of surgery would be required?

P.S. don't leave anything out
A hole near his eye? Isn't there something you can do to get rid of the hole? That just don't sound healthy at all and leaves him vulnerable to many infections.
