oh my, I probably have your answers. I had the Mirena for 5 yrs, I was about 37 yrs old when I got it, had never had any type of vaginal infection. Had been married for years. A year after the Mirena install I got the same fishy smell and itching you all describe (I don't remember any pain other than normal cramping). I wish I hadn't wasted so many trips to my OB that said it had nothing to do with the Mirena, she may have been correct in the end. On my last visit to the doctor, she was away delivering an emergency baby so my only choice was to see her Nurse Practioner who examined me and told me that I most likely developed that foul odor often because of the slight spotting that Mirena warns you about. Sure enough she swabbed and found a very small, foul amount of blood, I didn't even know it was there. She said menstrual blood is very organic, the blood from spotting sits in your vagina and rots sort of like leaving a small amount of steak sitting out on the counter for days. Since my 5 yrs was coming up I should have it removed. I also chose to have an ablation done at the same time because of the constant infections so I was put under. Didn't feel a thing. Insurance paid for the entire thing.

OMG, I cannot believe I haven't had one BV or any type of infection in these last 2 yrs. I can't believe all the times I was so embarrassed during sex, all the douches I tried, the probiotics and all other remedies on this post, even having my husband put on drugs thinking he was reinfecting me. In short (haha), it wasn't really the Mirena itself as your doctor keeps saying but the fact that it's there and causing the spotting which leads to the rotting smell.

I don't really have an answer about your next choice of birth control, I made my husband get "fixed" a few days before my Mirena removal and that has worked perfectly but I would have to say anything is better. I was also in my mid 40s and was convinced I wasn't going to have more babies but it took me a very long time to convince my husband to go under the knife.

Just an fyi, I had a copper T IUD for 10 yrs prior to the Mirena and my only side effect was heavy periods.

Hope I helped.

I just got the mirena put in a month ago. Slot of peopl was telling me not to get it because they kept getting the same things. I am now smelling this odor. I went back fir my 6 week cheek and mention this to my doctor. She just said it's probably because my cycle is going off and I just need to douche to get the left behind blood and everything would be fine. I did that and the smell was back an hour later. Alot of discharge. Now I'm reading your post and I know it's not due to intercourse becUse my boyfriend has been out of town with his music since December right before I got it. I haunt have sexual intercourse since. I got all the STD checks before I got it placed. Now this, my boyfriend will be back in two weeks & he's ready to get it on& I can't haventhgis smell when he comes back. Thanks slot I'm making any appointment today to get this out.

So I have been told that my body acne and nipples soreness are from NOT being on the pill anymore, not from the Mirena. But the yeast infection/BV infections are the last straw! I am also a clean person, wear cotton underwear, etc. Today I will be making an appointment to treat whichever infection I have going on now, and to get this stupid foreign thing out of my body!!

I had this hypothesis for the same reasons that you have mentioned...I think it's time to get rid of it. I don't think I can make it another 2 years with these conditions!

Ive had Mirena since Oct 2011 and at least twice a week my lower right side (ovary area) hurts so bad. I also get itching and burning, like a yeast infection, once a week and it lasts for about 3-4 days. Sex has been hurting me too. It never used to hurt this bad it was always pleasurable but now it hurts my uterus... I dont know what to do, because I was losing my insurance I decided to get something long term so I wouldnt have to pay $70 a month for my NuvaRing but I think I may have to go back to that because I'm about tired of feeling miserable all the time...

this is my problem exactally. I remember a dr told me that may be the cause but i never looked much into it. I have had bv for the last 9 months out of the 12 months i have had it, i'd have had it treated things go well for a week and right back it come. i have no health insurance so i finally gave up and am looking for a permanent solution for the problem. I THINK I FOUND IT! MIRENA!

I too have the Mirena IUD. I never had yeast infections of BV infections before having this IUD put in. Now, that's all I ever get, along with bleeding in excess of 22 days a month. I will get a BV infection about every other month and it often occurs literally 'out of nowhere'. I am writing here because I felt there MUST be other women in the world having these issues. I am 35 years old, a mother of 4 children. I've never had any problems with my sexual organs until I had this IUD put in. I told my GYN I wanted it out and, she too, says my infections are not caused by the Mirena. I say Bologna! She refuses to remove it even though I told her I wanted to start the Birth Control Patch. I guess I'll have to find another new GYN (3rd one in 5 years). I've been on other forms of Birth Control and Never have I ever had problems! I have one sexual partner only so I know it's not that. Plus, my BV infections do not come on during or after sex. I want to be straight forward... yesterday (feb. 29, 2012) I was in class (college) when I felt a gush from my vagina and then that potent "fishy" odor came on. I ran to the bathroom and I had started bleeding, but this was wet  (like water breakage) not sticky like discharge. This is the first time a BV came on like this for me. I have no had sex in over a week. I just finished my period (feb. 27th, 2012). So what gives? This has been really frustrating. I know how you ladies feel and I'm honestly going to try a new method of cleansing my body by taking Moringa Powder and Capsules. It is truly a miracle plant/tree. Maybe it will cure this darn BV!

This miraina c**p has done the same problem to me! This is the most uncomfortable problem every, vaginal infections. I hate it, they should lable this on the information of the products and GYNs should tell people about this consequence before putting it in.

I had my Mirena taken out today thank goodness, but of course because I have a BV, I am on an antibiotic gel to get rid of it. I am going to let my body get back to normal on its own then start the patch.

I haven't had the pleasure of actually getting an answer from a doctor's office, but your response here makes a whole lot of sense. My Mirena has been removed now for over a year. The first year I still was having some trouble with what I thought was BV. It was SOOOO discouraging to go to the doctor and have them tell me that I didn't have BV. So I am thinking now what???

I had a few different partners through my Mirena usage and it seemed that different partners affected my issues in different ways. That seems to still hold try post-Mirena. But as I read the above post, that little amounts of blood causing the smell totally makes sense. Kind of like, if you are busy all day and don't have an opportunity to change you tampon or pad - gets to smelling pretty disgusting. So it sounds to me like the Mirena causes such slight spotting that it doesn't make the trek all the way down the vagina. Hence, we don't know it's there. Now, different partners come in all different shapes an sizes, ahem....some of them could cause me to bleed a little even before I had the Mirena. It seems that the Mirena just exasperated the issue.

I am really doing great now. I do take probioticis, just in case. I do get up after sex and "scoop" out any semem I can with my hands in the shower and wash well. Keep it dry girls! On occasion I douche after my period or even as a vigorous sexual experience. I use a half hydrogen peroxide/water mix. This has helped me a lot and hope you can all find some hope in this. I am now on a low dose birth control and hopefully with either have an ablation or full on hysterectomy soon.

Good Luck!!
