I'm on the countdown till this coming Tuesday to have mine taken out! Same story; slight bleeding and that awful smell after intercourse! It's so embarrassing I've become paranoid about that smell. I douche (plain water) right before sex, fan on, window open and reed diffusers going on to mask the smell. It has had such a bad impact on my love life w my man. He doesn't even seem to want it anymore, and I can't blame him. Don't know what to use after Tuesday??? Guess it's bCk to the pill.. Wompwomp :( Love the lite periods and the ez carefree use but doesn't match up to the stanky aftermath!! Sorry mirena, can't do BV's...!!!

I just had my Mirena taken out today, because my husband and I want to try for another baby again, and when I was in to see the doctor I told her of some issues I have been having ever since it was put in place 3 1/2 years ago. Basically, I have had a yeast infection for 3 1/2 years, with chunky white discharge that occurs around the time of ovulation, but I never thought anything of it since it would clear on it's own (just to come back teh next month). A couple of times I tried Monostat, but no change was noted. Even worse, for 3 1/2 years I have been experiencing vaginal cuts and tears just beneath the vaginal opening. They weren't deep, but man did they hurt. Knowing full well that I or my husband were completely clean, I was convinced that this was something that I contracted while giving birth to my daughter. Anyway, when I told my doctor all of this today, she informed me that what has been going on for the past 3 1/2 years (ever since I got my Mirena) was a constant yeast infection, and then informed me that Monostat does not work on every kind of yeast infection, which is why I haven't been able to get rid of it. Hopefully all of my problems go away now that the Mirena is out. My doctor also gave me a strong, 2 dose, perscription for the yeast infection, so I'm crossing my fingers that my days of pain and discomfort will be behind me from now on.

I completely AGREE. I had NEVER had BV prior to my iud being placed and had suffered from a yeast infection maybe twice in my life.

A few months after the mirena was placed I started having monthly yeast infections. A few months after that CONTINUOUS BV started --- both infections return within days of being treated. I am VERY frustrated that these side effects / problems are not better documented by doctor's and BAYER.

FURIOUS would be a better description.

I am calling my doctor immediately to have the device remoived. I will have to find another form of birth control. I need my body to get back to its old self.

Dr has also given me pills flagal but i cant take them damn things cause they make everything taste like metallic. who wants everything you eat or drink to taste like metallic.. My dr said he didnt know if the mirena caused infections. I wish they could figure out what to do for this.. I believe this is the best form of protection. I dont have periods anymore and that is great. And i would have it taken out but i havent even paid for it yet and the cost is about 700.00 to 1000.00 who can afford to do that... well i just though i would put my 2 cents in.. thanks lady's for post your experience with the mirena!!!!

Hi Everyone!

I posted months ago about my problems I was having with the Mirena. Im 25 yrs old and I had the mirena for almost two yrs. so for two yrs. I was constantly dealing with itchiness, burning, abdominal pain and when I had intercourse it was uncomfortable and I always had an odor. I would go to the docs and get meds for a yeast infection or I would try to cure it myself with over the counter stuff and it seemed like it was back in just a few days. It was to the point that I was starting to wonder if it was something I was going to have to deal with for the rest of my life. It started a few months after it was inserted. I kept saying I was going to have it removed but at the same time I liked the fact that I didn't have to take a pill everyday, or get on the depo which caused me to gain weight in the past. I also thought it was great because I couldn't get pregnant....or at least I thought. I had been on it for almost two yrs. before I said "enough is enough" I went to the doctors to have it removed and to get medicine for this constant infection. To make a long story short I found out I was pregnant, they removed the mirena and told me there was a good chance I could miscarry by them taking it out, but it is safer for me if they do take it out. I was also told they cant give me any meds for the infec. because I'm pregnant. So I had to deal with it, but because I had yeast so long I ended up with a UTI too. Anyways two wks. after the removal I had a miscarriage, and about a 2 wks after that I went to the docs and got a pill for my yeast infection and (knock on wood) I have not had any odor, itchiness, burning,or excessive discharge for over a month. I almost forgot what it felt like to feel normal down there. I'm glad I'm back to normal again lol and I hope I helped some of you. Good luck...and my opinion would be to have it removed if your having the same issues that I was having.

Thank God I have stumbled on this post!! I am calling and getting my Mirena out!!! I have had it for 3 years and I feel like I cant take enough showers because I always have an odor and a yellowish slimy discharge.  It is so frustrating!!! I have been treating myself repeatedly for yeast when after reading this it seems like I have bv.  I said to my husband I swear something is just not right I haven't felt right since I have had it.  Birth control is such a scary thing so many side effects.  Wish there was a safer way!

So, I've only had the Mirena for maybe 2 months but this bacterial infection or BV has me out on the internet looking to see if Im the only one.  I hate these because just as all ya'll have atested to, the smell is so disturbing and makes me so uncomfortable.  I too am a very clean person and pride myself on smelling good, which I ususally do!  I work out a few times a week and I have noticed that when I do this, the smell seems to intensify!!  I can't take it.  And I have finished my gel medication for the infection, but I still am noticing that 'rotton' smell.  I am thinking about having it removed as well.  I may opt to get my tubes tied since I am done having kids.
I am glad that its not just me.. hang in there ladies!

I got the IUD a little over a year ago, and about 6 months after is when I started having problems!  I have bad sinus's and seem to have a sinus infection every few months.  I am not the type to get infections down there.... barely ever had a yeast infection (maybe one my whole life- I am 27)  So the antibiotics that I have had to take with the sinus problems causes the vaginal infection.  Then all that is supposed to clear up and boom here the BV.  I ask my doctor- Is this going to start happening everytime I have sex or turn around or what?  After having a baby and stuff when your sex life starts getting back to normal you sigh with relief because your normal again.  Well no I am not!  I now "think" I have a yeast infection, but who the hell knows?  It could be the BV again.  Although its does feel different than the BV infection.  This is just ridiculous.  WHen I first got it my husband and I had problems having sex-we both could feel it and had to cut the string to who only knows what length.  And then no period so I was like maybe this won't be bad.  (my sisterinlaw tried to warn me about infections, but I thought well maybe thats just her)  We are talking about having another baby and so I am thinking about getting it taken out anyway.  I am trying to lose some more weight before I get pregnant again so it will be a months ahead before we even go there.  I think going on something different is what I need to do.  I'm glad I stumbled across this because all the comments I have read sound exactly like what I have been going through.  I have had the ring it makes me gain weight along with Low Estrin 24.  So which pill do you go on?  Was on Yaz for awhile.  But have heard bad things about it too!  What to do what to do?

Man man man....this is so horrible! It's always something. I know Mirena would be too good to be true. Do not listen to you Gyno, they don't care about how or what you feel. All they care about is how much this thing cost! Let me tell you, I am 29 years old and have only been with one partner my entire life, my husband of 9 yrs. I have never had such problems with my couchie before. Its so ridiq!! Every single time we have sex, the very next day I get this STINCH, oh, my world!!! If its one thing I cant stand, its a stank couchie. This is not ok. My doctor gave me a prescription for some inserts that can be used over a six month time period, but idk. I already told him I wanted it out, then he said try that first. So I will, but I believe it will just be a cover up and then the problems will return. Iv'e had more yeast infections with this thing also. I'll try this thing and then come back to let you all know if it works or if it took away the problem, cuz doc says that it is just my ph that is off. Yeah right!! Please, if thats the case the why wasn't my ph off all the time. Trying to tell me about my stuff, I know my own monkey.....smh!

God, I'm so happy that I'm not the only one having issues with this thing. I had mine put in six months ago and I thought it was a godsend. No pills, no babies, nothing to worry about for 5 whole years. Wrong. I instantly stopped getting my period after the initial bleeding was over, but I would get terrible cramps every month when I should have been getting it. other than that it was okay for the most part. Then I started waking up with huge bruises on my legs and I had no idea how they got there. I read online that mirena can make you anemic, which can also cause you to bruise extremly easily, so my weekly jogs had to stop because the strain on my legs was causing giant bruises. Now I believe I have my first yeast infection of my life. It itches so badly that it takes me hours to get to sleep and i can never get comfortable. I feel so disgusting. And on top of that there's not really any need for the stupid thing because my libido is so low that I don't even want him to touch me at all. Most of the time I feel like I'd rather punch him in the face, which has never happened to me before so I'm guessing it has something to do with the hormones, because I've heard other people say the same things. I hate this thing. I'm going to have it removed and go with either loestrin24 or seasonique.

I first got the myrena in 2005 -- I started having BV immediately.  3 doctors told me they had nothing to do with the IUD.  I had never had one before and all pap smears have been normal.  I decided to take out the IUD in 2007 and I STILL have recurring BV and yeast infections.  2 new doctors have told me it isn't the myrena that has caused this -- but I never had a problem before.  I have been with my husband for 12 years and we never had an issue.  Now, it seems that every time we have sex, I get an infection.  All the doctors tell me is that my vagina is too acidic for him....why wasn't this the case 12 years ago?  I usually have to take antibiotics once a month, and the metrogel once a month!! Is anyone experiencing the same problems even after the removal?? Please help -- I do not want this to be an issue for the rest of my life! It's extremely embarrassing when your husband says "I think you have another infection.."  Thanks for the advice!

I have no problem with the Mirena EXCEPT for the fact that I CAN NOT get rid of BV.. I am so stressed out about it, what girl wants to have a ordor and discharge. Im getting mine taken out in 2 weeks, couldnt be happier, but I heard it was a little painful after taken out with the craps and heavy bleeding. I hope not. Well thanks for this post, I never would have known other girls were having the same problem. My dr just keeps giving me more meds, instead of saying its the birth control. Glad us girls stick together!!!

I had Mirena for 18 months and it's been horrible. The first time I was diagnosed with Bacterial Vaginosis I thought it was just like getting yeast infection... you get it... you treat it and it goes away for a long time. But then I keep getting it every month,  going back to the doctor and getting the same infection. I asked the doctor if it could be my Mirena and she said no. She said it could be stress, diet or the soap I'm using or the underwear, I'm wearing, I didn't believe her because I have never had this infection and I haven't change anything in the way I eat or the clothes I wear.. So then I thought maybe my body is just getting used to the Mirena, so I was going to at least give it a year but it didn't get better, instead it got worse. I would get it often sometimes twice a month. I talked to a friend who had it longer than I have and she eventually gave up because it never got better so she had it pulled out. I took her advice and had mine taken out today. I'm going back to Nuva Ring so I can have a normal sex life.

Good Luck Ladies!!!
