Hi, i'm 17 years old and been suffering from extremely long labia minora which rubs against clothing or hangs out of my underwear, i've tried so many things to make myself comfortable EG lubricating jelly, creams such as sudocrem and savlon. since i was 10 years old it's been something i've had to cope with, i went to see a gynecologist when it first started to bother me and she told me when i started to develop that it wouldn't affect me as much but it always has, i recently went back to my doctors and she examined me and she said that she thought it would be best to have labiaplasty. I've been referred to a gynecologist again and i'm waiting for an appointment at the hospital, but if i'm honest i'm really nervous, i don't know what to expect as the last time i went i was only 10 years of age and was just wondering if anyone knows what i should be expecting and whether labiaplasty would benefit me?

Having worked for a cosmetic surgery company that offered this surgery i do know how traumatic this can be to a young woman. I once came accross a woman who had attempted it herself!!!!! Not an option, far to dangerous.

The operation is mostly done by general anesthetic and there is a risk of bleeding afterwards as this is a very vascular area.

The procedure involves cutting away of the excess labial folds while ensuring that not to much is removed, it carries a high risk of infection afterwards so the utmost care is needed with personal hygiene afterwards. Most women heal very quickly and within 6 weeks the scars should be fully heales although will remain visable for over 12mnths.

Most patients dont complain of too much pain but it is uncomfortable.

As a nurse and mother i know its best to leave it and learn to adjust your undergarments etc, however i also know as a pychologist how this can effect you.

Ask loads of questions, research your surgeon and be comfortable with him before agreeing to surgery.

Good luck x

I like your answer. It's very difficult to get the information you need to make an informed decision because we are mainly going to hear from the unhappy ones.

It does appear to me that a cosmetic surgeon is the way to go rather than GPs or a gyno.

What is your opinion about that?

Of course I think it would be better to leave things alone too, but I'm not the owner of the long lips. I have no idea how much it bothers her, or hurts.

Any surgery you have in that area will affect and change the quality of your sexual response and sexuality. Try to find
a good doctor or gynecologist recommended by your family pediatrician before thinking about surgery.
