Hello Everyone,
Recently my mom had a Ultrasound done for the whole abdomen (actually the test was done for some digestion problems she had for a while) and the
radiologist told us that the left kidney is smaller in size and is not in its original place. I was bit worried from then on. I am putting up the test results here can you please educate me on this further,
" Right Kidney measures 10.1*4.3cms. Normal in size, shape and echo
texture. No Evidence of any pelvicalyceal dilatation. No Calculi seen."
" Left Kidney measures 6.3*3.2cms. Smaller in Size, Not seen in Left Renal
Fossa. Left Kidney Seen in Pelvic Cavity with hilum rotated anteriorly."
Impression: Pelvic Kidney Left. Left Kidney is small in size located in
pelvis with malrotation.
Please let me know that is there any health problem regarding this or is my mom ok. Any kind of help will be appreciated

no, ectopic(out of place) kidneys are not by themselves a bad thing. The kidney starts off in the pelvis and moves upward as the fetus develops and sometimes the kidney doesn't go far enough or goes too far. Ectopic kidneys can range any where from the chest down to the pelvis, or be on the wrong side of the body.
It is very possible that the left (pelvic) kidney is a non functioning, or low functioning kidney if it measures less that 8cm, as it appears to be from your dimensions. It would be a good idea to have your mother havea lab test done for her kidney function to determine if they are functioning well. You can still function perfectly fine on one kidney.
