I have chronic costochondritis for 20 years. Not all cases of costochondritis resolve, so please know that. Several times a year I have acute episodes that mimic a heart attack, the inflammation becomes so bad.

Costochondritis should not be dismissed by physicians because inflammatory conditions, especially those that are chronic, are increasingly linked to serious disease.

Have something similar and was diagnosed as intercostal neuralgia--nerve pain in the intercostal nerves between the ribs. Have been trying to treat this for 2 years now. Not much progress but could relate because it NEVER leaves me. Wraps around my lower ribs, mostly on left side. Is worse when I lie down or sit--almost gone when I am standing.

I fractured 2ribs due to a car accident about6 months ago and I still get pain and discomfort depending on how I move or if I lift heavy things.

I have had this pain for over 20 years, lifting a patient off the floor, I was diagnosed with Intercostal Neuralgia by my Chiropractor I was referred to. He also diagnosed Pelvic & Spinal rotation, Thoracic Back & said I had Scoliosis which I never knew I had. I live in constant pain. Has anyone else experience similar pain. Thanks for listening.

I have been having chest pains on my left side since I was 17, so for 8 years now. It occurs under my left breast towards my breastbone. It feels like an immense pressure and piercing pain. My doctor told me that more than likely I have "costochondritis", which is basically a condition that causes pain and tenderness in the joints that connect the ribs to the breastbone. Ask your doctor if this could be what you have. Unfortunately the only thing that helps me is either pressing on the ribs, lying on my left side with my arm extended or taking some tylenol or ibuprofen. Hope this helps.

Try Versatis strips. Yhey are a local anaesthetic and relieve pain for 12 hours. You have to leave them off for the following 12 hours. You may not have to use them again or until the next episode occurs

I was sending an email to my daughter, who is a doctor, this morning describing the symptoms I've seen in other posts.  I am a 60 year old woman, (otherwise in good health and who exercises by walking or using an elliptical regularly, and who has recently lost 7 lbs using Weight Watchers, and who will no longer be overweight when I lose 2 more), who has intermittently experienced this over the past two years.  My primary doctor ordered an abodominal US about 18 months ago, which revealed nothing relevant to this pain.  While sitting at the computer this morning I stretched by sitting up straighter at the same time that I fully expanded my ribs in a deep breath, a movement which had been painful all morning, and instantly the pain is totally gone.  It was almost as if two things were caught on each other and they finally slid back into place.

I had to reply to this as I dont normally scan the web when I feel ill, but I have the same symptoms for last 3 weeks or so now and have started to feel slightly concerned. The pain is on my back, rib area, underneath my shoulder blade, it feels bruised but there is no bruise or mark at all and the pain is starting to creep. It is very uncomfortable wearing my bra, or if anything touches it, even the slightest touch is uncomfortable. It is really uncomfortable if I lay on that side. I have not pulled a muscle or recall injurying myself. I am usually very healthy (although in the process of opening a business which is quite stressful) so hence, my concern. I am seeing my GP on Friday, which is far sooner than I would normally, but I cant afford for this to get worse and taken time off work, so fingers crossed it is nothing serious. I am sorry to hear to that I am not the only one experiencing these symptoms, but also somewhat comforted to know that I am not alone (in a weird sort of way :-)). I will report back on what my GP says. Best health everyone and thanks.
