Hi, folks. I have a cat that is diagnosed with diabetes. I didn’t even know that cats can have problems with this. I would like to find out something more about the life expectancy for cats with this disease. I would like to have some info before I consult a vet. I will appreciate all your replies.
I have now had 2 cats that were diabetic. Both at the age of 8. My first diabetic cat lived to be 16 & had insulin shots twice a day. I just lost my second diabetic cat Monday at the age of 13. He also received shots twice a day. I have 13 years now of dealing with diabetic cats & hope I never have to do this again. Its heartbreaking to lose them after you cared for them so long.

If you live long enough and have a lot of pets you're bound to discover diabetes in pets. I've had 2 cats and a dog so far. We were not able to control it well in any of them and they died not long after discovering it.

I recently was forced to put my cat down because her diabetes got too bad. I first learned of her diabetes when she was 5 and had it pretty under control for 9 years. She found it well, but with her again her body could not maintain it anymore and she became very weak and a failing liver. My vet told me that only option would be to put her down, and even though I tried to push for some kind of medicine or surgery, but the vet said nothing would help, so I put her down. If correctly treated and maintained, the cat can live a long life with diabetes.

My cat was diagnosed with diabetes at 13 she's now 20. Just make sure you consult a vet who understands all about. I inject her twice a day and her dosage has never changed.

Congratulations to you and your remarkable cat, I also had a cat with diabetes, Gremmie he was 12 when diagnosed, and on a daily morning injection lived to be 14 years, and 8months, a more amiable cat you could'nt wish to meet, or treat.Hope your cat carries on for many more years.

I've got a 17.5 year old cat who has lived with diabetes for the past twelve years. He's near the end - in too much pain from osteoarthritis and neuropathy - but with twice daily insulin (it took several tries to get him on a kind that worked) and diet changes, he's been my happiest, most long-lived cat to date.

I watched him being born in April 2000, so we have a special attachment...not sure what I'll do without him. But this goes to show that with loving care (and, alas, a lot of money and time) a diabetic cat can thrive and be happy.

Please don't put your cat down or worse, leave the diabetes untreated (a slow, painful death). If you can't afford or commit to treatment, you might be able to find someone who is willing to care for a diabetic kitty. Best of luck.

My cat is 15 and has had diabetes for the last 10 years. I give him insulin twice daily when he eats and I ensure he does not eat too much. He had special low carb food for the first 5 years but i switched to regular canned food with no issues. This has kept him healthy for the most part. I think in 10 years he has had 3 episodes of Ketoacidosis where he had to have IV and stay at the vet. These were scary times and cost $$$ but all worth it. Miraculously he recovered each time! Cats with diabetes need extra care and love but can definitely live a long and happy life. Please if you cannot afford or commit to caring for this type of cat try to find someone who will.

We just lost our diabetic Siberian male cat of 14 years and 9 months. He lived about 15 months after being diagnosed and was seemingly very stable on a 2 unit dose of insulin twice a day. He decompensated however when we went away for 4 days on a vacation and stopped eating and drinking for his caregivers in our home. He was always very attached and could not deal with us being away. He went into DKA and seemed to start to bounce back after a night at the vet. clinic and with sub-cutaneous fluids at home for a few days. His glucose levels however would not stabilize and he stopped eating and drinking again within another week. It was so sad to watch him weaken and we decided to have him put to sleep to avoid further suffering. He was brave till the end though and wanted to always be in our company right to the very end.

Your post was very informative as our stories are almost identical. Our cat has been on insulin since he was 4. He has been blind for a couple of years. He is at the max dosage for insulin. He is the best cat at 16.5 years. Concerns about his back legs getting weak. However he does not let anything slow him down. We will be lost without him
