My left diaphragm paralyzed in 2010, leaving me only the right lung for breathing. I quit smoking 13 years ago. My concern is with the left lobe what is it susceptible to? Also if I get pneumonia in the good lung tends to make me think I would be in big trouble. Would like to hear from anyone.

I am 64 years old and had my right lung removed 5 years ago. No one told me my empty chest cavity would shrink over time if I didn't stay as physically active as possible. It causes the shoulder to drop permanently, also. Even though it is hard to stay active, I suggest to keep trying. Good Luck.

I have 1 lung. I am now 65. My left lung does NOT function since surgery 2015. I can say with ABSOLUTE certainty, that I functioned better with lungs. My lung function tests have improved from 50% to 70% from 2015 until 2017. I walk the track 2xdaily. I can only walk 3/4 of a mile. That is great from living a sedentary lifestyle for over 2 years. I get very short of breath when walking. As the MD explained: your life will be different, because you have 1 lung. I can stroll with no problem- its the aerobic part that is less than optimal. it is NOT time to give up. It is time to push through this. I know this for certain, don't exercise your lung and you most likely will become less strong and lose more and more endurance/ stamina daily. Best wishes!

I was born with one lung and one kidney. It was very hard at first living at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. I stopped breathing plenty of times. Now I'm 40 I played my favorite sport which is hockey, I'm married with 2 happy and healthy kids. All the times I stopped breathing I have a stutter. After all I've been through being hooked up to every machine possible back then, being in the ICU countless time and I only have a stutter then I'm happy with that. Thanks and have a great day.

My best wishes for everyone affected by this. Six years ago, my left Phrenic nerve was severed as necessary to remove Thyroid cancer. I am cancer free, thank God. The phrenic nerve sends the signal to the diaphragm to move in and out so that the lung expands or contracts for breathing. I lost the ability to use my left lung. I have been able to live almost normally except when it comes to doing physical exertions. I always feel the shortness of breath. I have eight hours of ballroom dance classes a week plus weekend ballroom dancing. What ever expanded lung capacity this aerobic exercise increased, it isn't not enough to be normal. I quickly get winded and I usually have to stop dancing after a full song and then it takes me one or two songs for me to stop panting and breath normally and dance again. I am easily winded when doing heavy yard work, like shoveling, mowing the lawn, getting in and out of the car, and also climbing stairs is done slowly and depending how long it is, I may stop half way to breath. I can walk miles but I pant a bit especially if talking. When speaking I have plan my sentence length so that I don't run out of breath halfway through the sentences. My energy level dropped after loosing the use of my left lung. I used to play golf at the range three times after work. I don't have the inclination to play golf because of the lack of air and energy level since. I had to give Jon scuba diving. Doctor says I have correct oxigenation and I am not allowed to get oxigen for these exertion periods. Don't be afraid, life will still go on, you have lots to do and to enjoy life. I don't get pneumonia or any sickness related to this. I am 62 years old.

I was involved in a car accident. Lady passed out and her car hit me inside a convenience store. Freak accident. Left me with only one lung. Life is different. Air quality matters more now. I'm a mailman. Hot days with no AC is terrible the way it is. However, I'm still able to perform my duties and function with one lung. Delivering heavy packages does briefly get me winded but I'm fine by the time I get back to the truck. The area I
Iive in has about five code orange air quality days a year. Which I can't work in. Puts too much straigh on the remaining lung. Yes. I could go on full disability, but I still can do the physical work. The problem isn't lifting. I'm strong as an ox. It's breathing. I use to run five miles a day, twice a week. I dont run any more. I've gained weight and am constantly tired, but most of the fatigue is due to the job and Amazon packages. On vacations, I'm not as tired and can walk 30 minutes to an hour every day with no problems and start to lose weight. Its the physical job that's wearing me out. I personally don't like being disable or being treated as such, but I do have to take things slower. Mowing the yard use to take an hour. Now it takes two. Basically, it's a struggle to catch your breath at times. You just have to get use to the not being able to exert yourself as much as you use too. Best of luck and be Blessed.

Hi my mum has been diagnosed with mouth cancer. Today they diagnosed her with it in her lungs. Atm they don't know how much is there. But they say it's in both. One being a follow on from the mouth in which some take it in the neck. But hers hasn't. And the other lung they class as primary. If one is taken out can she get the tumor cut out of the second and survive.

My mother in law was healthy and active and then, this summer she started to have trouble breathing. She had know idea she had scarring in her left lung. She has systemic sclerosis but has managed it. She is being told she needs to go into Hospice since her left lung is highly scarred. She is in ICU but feels fine other than she needs oxygen. It is good to know you can live with one lung. Do any of you have experience with sclerosis and one lung? Thank you....she is only 72 and not ready to go.

Had my left lung removed when i was in my 30"s didn't notice any difference in my breathing my right lung expanded to composite for the loss of the left one. Now that im in my late 50's it's getting harder and harder to breath i can't go to the mailbox without being so out of breath sometimes i can't even talk cause i can't breath. I use a inhaler and a nebulizer sometimes those don't even help giving up hope in Orlando
