So I've had my period for two weeks now since i got my IUD, and my periods usually last 3 to 5 days. Is this normal? Cause I'm kind of getting sick of blood coming out of my vag....

I haven't seen many detailed experiences, so I thought I would share mine so far. I have a genetic blood disorder called Factor V Leiden. This disorder increases my risk for blood clots by 80-100%. My risk will increase if I go on hormonal birth control or smoke, and pregnancy is a very high risk situation for me as well. Because of this disorder, my periods have always been very heavy and extremely painful with a lot of clotting. I started with 10 day periods that reduced to 7 but still painful. After I moved to an all girl floor at college last september, my periods stayed the same in length but got much lighter and I experienced less cramping. After going to the gyno, she informed me that I could use birth control but my options were limited to progesterone-only styled methods in order to curb the clotting/cramping/painful periods. These left me with Depo-Provera shots, Implanon implant, or Mirena IUD. Even though my periods had gotten slightly better, I didn't want to risk it going back to the way they were and I still wanted the birth control protection.

I had my device placed on 7/5/12. I'm only nineteen and have never had a child, so I found insertion to be extremely painful. I'm sure if I had taken ibuprofen before I went it would've been less painful. For the next five days post-insertion, I experienced heavy cramping that reduced to moderate, then mild cramping. I consistently used prescription ibuprofen for the first two days after insertion. I experienced three days of nothing after my post-insertion bleeding before my period had started (It was due on the 15th, but I got it in 7/13/12). My first period on Mirena takes me back to the days of when I first got my period at the age of 14, only then it lasted 10 days. I am going on three weeks with a period, relatively consistent in heavy bleeding and clotting with no true signs of letting up. I understand this irregularity is supposed to be normal for the first few months after insertion, but it's driving me insane! Since Mirena, I've also experienced the side effects of mood swings, back pain, breast tenderness, and a slight increase in acne. I'm hoping that things will be better by Thanksgiving and trying to stay optimistic, but it's definitely tough to get through this part of the process. It's a relief to know that others are experiencing what I am.

I've had the IUD put it in August 30, 2012 and my period started September 5th today is September 26 and I'm still in my period I was worry at first but then I searched an it says its gonna be like that the first 3- 6 months I didn't had pain when I had it in and no other side effects just the bleeding but the good thing about mirena is that I can have sex without using protection and don't worry about getting pregnant. When I had sex with my boyfriend the first time after mirena I was scared cause I thought my boyfriend was gonna feel the strings but he didn't feel anything neither me so we enjoyed it like before without protection it also depends on the doctor how he leaves the strings because some leave them long. But every person has a different side effect depends on the body

Oh I glad I found this place, I on day 17 of light to medium bleeding, I was not told this could happen and if I had been told I would never of let the medical field near me with a Mirena. I hate bleeding as it is and I was told this would stop it. I guess I will be seeing my doc asap and demanding this removed. I had my Mirena inserted August 31 and had really sore boobs for 3 weeks and then the bleeding started on the 23rd Sept, now the 8th of October and I have had enough. So much money spent of womens products and the icky feeling of blood continuously. GAME OVER for me :(

Hi I not sure where I am at with this whole thing but trying to stay optimistic.  I had my mireana placed Aug 15, 2012.  I did not really thing the placement was bad at all I was about two day after my period ended.  I spotted very lightly other than the first day or two for the rest of the month, very light cramping if any after the first day or two.  In September I had about 5 days free of anything before my period started.  Over all I would say my PMS symptoms were less, very light flow/spotting, light cramps and not clotting to speak of.  though it did last for about two weeks (not happy normally 4-6 days).  Now its October had about three weeks of nothing, period started thought I was not sure at first it was just spotting.  today is day 10 still very light seems to start and stop spotting hope its going to stop soon.  Trying to wait it out that by the 3 or 6 month mark things will be all good.  I have also in the last 5 months lost 57lbs so that could be playing a part as I was a little off before the Mireana.  I ready some place else some had actually posted that they loved Mirena,  and that most of the post you read are negative because those who are happy with are not out reading forums.  Kind of makes since to me, plus my midwife says she thinks there great so I am optimistic.

I've had the mirena in for 3 years in July.  The first year my sex drive was fine.  The next 2 years I lost all desire. Which the doctor says the mirena has nothing to do with it.  The first 3 years I had no periods at all.  I would get a gush of blood every few months wipe it and it was done.  The only bad thing about that is I never knew when it was going to happen but it was very rarely.  For the past 3 months now I've had constant heavy bleeding, clotting, headaches, cramps and acne.  Can only wear black underwear because I never know if it's going to leak.  Most of the time it's only when I wipe that there is a  ton of blood and clots in the toilet.  I use to highly recommend the mirena to anyone I met now I'm changing my mind on this.  My doctor keeps telling me if I can stick it out through this breakthrough bleeding I will be happy I did.  But I'm not convinced that it's ever going to go back to how perfect the first 3 years were.  How long can this possibly last?

I'm glad I've found this as I've been panicking about my IUD for the last few days! I got mine put in late February (so about 10 months ago) and ended up having constant, very light but extremely irregular spotting. I never really had many heavy or painful periods before and with the IUD it was even lighter. I am 18 and never had children so it was painful having it put in but otherwise it was fine. After about the first six months the spotting and bleeding completely stopped until now. I didn't have sex very often but I have recently got a new partner. After the first few times we had sex I started spotting during and after. However, the last time, the spotting didn't stop and got much much worse and now I am having one of the heaviest periods I have ever experienced. I still have no pain but I am going into my 3rd week of bleeding and it's driving me crazy! I have just gotten into a new relationship and I am worried this is going to push him away.. I am also becoming very sexually frustrated and having very bad mood swings. I am tempted to get it removed if this doesn't improve!

when i got mine in april 14th i started on like the 19 about two days after i had gallbladder surgery on the 16th i was bleeding for the first 3 months and like 2 weeks into the 4th month of august. i dont crave sweet things but i have major lower back pain. i have tried to change my now 11 month old born feb baby in the car on the back seat does not take me longer than a minute and half if he's fussy with a pee diaper and depending on how bad a poo one is no longer than 5 minutes. that minute though is hell any longer i want to cry i feel like my back is cramped and cant move. i didnt even know i was have contractions while in labor either. so my back feels worse than a sprained ankle or wrist and the contractions together no joke.

I've had my IUD for 10 months and my periods are now two weeks long.  I can't tell that they are much lighter since I still go through 3 to 4 super tampons for about 4 days of the period.  I bleed for about three months straight when I first go it.  I've had more bleeding in the last 10 months than the last several years. Not happy about the increased appetite either. I wished I would have tried something else.  My tubes are tied so I do not use for birth control.
