I am 1 year from post op from open lower anterior resection and I am still dealing with evacuation issues. The metamusil helps a bit but still struggling a lot with evacuation and several trips to bathroom. Constipated for 2 days then 3 rd day consist of 5 to 9 times. It used to be over 15 times a day, so it has gotten better but I still have to rush to bathroom sometimes. Also I have tenemes. It is very annoying and frustrating and I must strain then just pre maturely wipe. bloating and sharp pain by incision that goes away at times

Had a LAR 1 year and 6 days ago. It took 9 month before I could really could anything. All kinds of problems that I was never told could happen. The worst is bladder, it still not right and severe stomach pain every so many days that keeps me on the couch all day. Got the bathroom bit mostly under control. I have to take 4 to 5 loperamide a day, 4 to 5 dicyclomine a day and metamucil 2 times a day and every day. If I miss I lose total control. I don't know why but only rarely have to go during day mostly 6 PM to midnight. Wasn't always this way. For the first 6 months didn't think a person could take so much pain and not go insane. Enough on that, if I told my hole story it would be pages long. The one thing I want to pass along is having to go so much and if you dont clean you self I sure you know what happenes. The burning, itching, sore to the touch. ( you probably know when fecal matter comes in contact with air it produces a enzyme that burns your skin) To solve this problem I installed a separate spray handle in my bathtub ,shower and sit and wash after every movement. What a difference. Haven't had diaper rash in about 6 months. I installed it because I know how but even if I had to pay i would of. I couldn't live without it. You can do it off the shower head but thats a pain. And when constipated a little water pressure in the right spot works wonders. Asked Doc if its ok to due a enama with tap water and no problem. nih.gov says its ok to. Saves on TP to. I just wanted to pass this along, I even had the pleasure of getting cut twice (not really) the first resection leaked. Good luck Tom in VT

I have had nothing but problems after an LAR. What a bad choice on my part. I received no instruction after surgery. I was afraid to eat high fiber foods, but that is supposed to help. My stupid surgeon told me nothing. I hate hi!

To Tom in Vermont, thank you for your response. My resection was a lower anterior resection about 10 inches was removed. My surgery was July 2014 and its November 2015 approx 16 months. I always feel like I have to go to the bathroom, I started to realize the difference from "just the feeling" and actually having to go, but I get anxiety of it because I don't like taking the chance. I currently take metamusil every night and my bowels have improved but still go at least 5 times a day. Evacuation is always an issue. My pains are not as frequent as they used to be but I still have pains in my stomach especially after eating. Most people after a year do get better but I believe they don't post because they are tired of talking about it and have accepted their new condition and have learned to deal with it. Dealing and accepting were very hard for me. I wanted to give up update for all the people going through this. I spoke to a Dr. (you can look her up DR. Katrine Emmerson) she has done a ton of studies on LARS and was extremely informative. She states about 30% of people still suffer lifetime issues after a LAR. I hope this info is helpful for people still suffereing or dealing. I would live to hear from anyone that is post op after a year. I was stage o and did not have to endure any radiation. Good luck to all that read.

I am almost 7 years out from my low anterior resection and struggled mightily for about two years. At that time I began "irrigating" about three times every two days. This is basically a warm water enema and generally gives me close to 24 hours of freedom. Doing this, planning when and how much I eat (not so much what I eat), and the occasional immodium allows me the closest thing to normal quality of life. I spend about 1 1/2 hours per day in the bathroom. This is not for everyone but may work for some.

had the same surgery going on 10 months was hospitalized for two months because of blood clots after surgeries taking blood thinners now and I'm back to work but can barely make it through the day from the dull nagging pain in my rectal area and the constant discharge my doctor says there's nothing he can do for me but give me something for the pain and that's it. I'm starting to get tired of the pain and complaining about it. Starting think irrational thoughts on how to deal with it. I know I'm grumpy and feel irritable toward the people I love and don't want them to remember me that way. Sorry about your dad.

He may have an absess or sinus tract. After my surgery I had an absess that caused horrible pain and bloody mucus rectally, and a constant need to go potty ((tenesmus)

Hi Craig

I am 6 months from Low Anterior resection. I like all of your comments.
My I say that I still have 12 BMs a days so that is a worry. I want to go see this Chinese
girl in one month which will involve plane trip from Australia. Immodiium works for me
when I use it say once a week, I was afraid that my body would get used to it so I have been
using it sparingly. I do drink alcohol every day which I will try to cut down soon. I do like
my vegetables every night. I havent really focussed on diet as yet even though I'm a bit
of a scientific sort of guy. I wish there was some dye I could take with my meal so I could
tell which food id the culpit. If I have a new wife I will need to control my sh*t better for her to accept me. I guess I will experiment some more with food. Its good to see that some people on this blog take Immodium with success. Maybe I will try one a day from now on.

Guys I can tell you one thing though, you MUST MUST do this - wash your bum with water
every time. This will help a lot. If for some reason you havent used water, or after 10 BM's you feel your bum getting sore, use ONLY CALMOSEPTINE.

Dont use Sudocreme or any other cream. Only use Calmoseptine. Its the golden remedy.
All others are useless.

Could anyone on this blog please get back to me to confirm they have had success with
Calmoseptine ? Also dont use wipes or toilet paper. See, what happens is, after 10 BM's your ass is sick of wipes and gets sore. You must use Calmoseptine, and water. No other wipes or toilet
paper.

Hope this helps.
