I had part of my rectum and lower colon removed on Feb 2014. The nerve pain was horrible but after a year the pain went away. I go to the washroom at least 5 to 6 times a day and only releasing a portion of a stool. As soon as I eat something I have to go to the washroom but only to release a portion. I use to be constipated and had loose stools but after the year they do become normal but frequent. You do get use to it and I am still trying to figure out what to eat. No doctor has been able to give me much advise but I am just glad to be alive and no more nerve pain.

Initially had the some of the same issues mentioned post LAR; frequent (every few minutes) pain.
Used an app (mySymptoms) to log bowel movements, needed to keep at Bristol #4 if it moved to 5 I would take 1 Imodium + 1 citrucel + 1 mm pill. That evening unless 5 or higher; might take 1 of the fibers. If still at 5 another Imodium. if it hits 6 or 7 - I take 2 Imodium with both fibers. Ideally you never want constipated, so I give it 3-4 hrs. But logging and taking low dose of Imodium helps. Some of the pain i narrowed down to burning pain, which was intense for the first few weeks, which is from a little of the stool leaking and burning the skin. We are not talking - visble in underwear. This does not happen at Bristol#4. After I realized the above I gained confidence in bm. I eat normally, but religious treat when it hits 5 on the scale. By the way 5 is too soft to clean well and still has the frequency but less than 6/7. If at 4 can have a bowel movement a day or every other. I also stay hydrated. If 2/3 just 2 citrucel with water. Try to avoid the swings.

Hope this helps. 5 months post op, some weeks I don't take any Imodium, other days I might take 1 every 3 hours.

Hi, I had my LAR 11 weeks ago, had some rectum removed due to a cancerous polyp. Everything’s fine thank god,but have to still go back for bloods etc. I lost a stone as most of my appetite just went. Didn’t want to lose weight as made me look ill, but it was coming off regardless. Iv just manage to put a couple of pounds back on. Just takes time to get back to normal and recover.

ill share with you my thoughts after Sigmoid colon resection surgery two weeks ago. I should have done much more research into this before surgery before and made the decision not to proceed. I am having six stools before lunch and find sitting sometimes with a lot of pain in rectum. Talked with afriend and he said get used to it and I can now understand why. This is my explanation. The descending colon drops down waste to the sigmoid colon which acts as a trap or holding area because of the S shape. When this area fills, pressure is sent around to the rectum and initiates a movement. When 8 inches was removed from this area the remaining Sigmoid was drawn up and attached to the descending colon. Now waste comes down without a holding area right to the rectum and yes, have to go again. I was getting by with antibiotics after diverticulosis flare ups for seven years. Should have stayed on course.

Five years ago had a Lower anterior Resection after radiation and chemotherapy, sailed through the treatment but found the surgery really rough. I also has a discoloured mucus after the operation thought I had a temporary bag. My Doctor gave me all kinds of anti-bacterial tablets to get rid of the infection. I was on oromorph for the first three months because the pain at the internal site of the operation was so awful but. slowly but surely it did get a lot better and just take an ordinary codeine when needed now. It takes time, your bowels will never be the same but you adapt. Have travelled a lot since I had my cancer, refuse to let it get on top of me. Good luck!

I am 14 years on from an LAR and the first year was very rough. I did not receive much support after surgery and have had intermittent loose stools for ever. However, I have found that taking liquid Imodium gives me a 5 hour window if I want to go out for lunch, run errands etc. There are also some foods which I do not eat. i.e. hot spicy food, lentil soup !!, excessive amounts of fibre.
