Where are you now in your journey. My daughter is 15 and has had 4 foot surgeries. She has tarsal coalition problems. They are wanting to fuse the calcaneus and navicular.

I had a navicular cuneiform fusion and mid foot fusion on my right foot 8 years ago for arthritis. It was the best thing I did! I have no pain in that foot now and am having the navicular cuneiform fusion in a couple days. The main thing is to make sure you keep your foot elevated above your heart for 2 days. After just keeping your foot at all times elevated. You only get one chance to do it right the first time. My pain was minimal because my foot was up all the time.

What are you like now? My 16 yo daughter had the same injury with her horse falling over with her on the saddle. Fusion is being discussed now. Keen to know how you are getting on?

I have had my 3 Rd mid foot fusion First all came loose, 2nd screw broke, 3rd screw left in because it was too deep to be removed.
I have severe pain when walking or at rest.
I have had 17 trts. Of Physio,$500. Orthotics, $ 400 orthopaedic shoe & TENS trts. All to no avail. My advice for this Litz foot franc injury is try the orthotics before any surgery

I was glad to read your post. You give me hope. I had an extensive mid foot fusion 12 days ago. I have been putting off the surgery for years while trying everything else. At 71 it was time to fish or cut bait. I was very afraid of post surgery pain because I can't take most pain meds, but it was relatively painless. I only had to take 6 Percocets after the nerve block wore off. I'm icing and elevating my foot. However, managing non weight bearing in a 2 story house has been very difficult. The only preparation I had for this was through reading other's experience online and u-tube instructions. I had purchased an elevated toilet seat, and a wonderful knee roller, but my surgeon surprised me by taking a bone graft from my tibia at the knee. So far I have been unable to kneel. Hopping around with my walker is certainly giving me a cardio work out and my core strength is increasing. However my non-operative foot that I am now hopping on is arthritic and painful. It was outpatient surgery and I only received 15 minutes of physical therapy before being discharged. Not nearly enough. Somehow I managed to get up 3 porch steps with the crutches and 2 people holding onto me, then drag my body backward up the stairs, along the hallway and onto a low bed. It was a week before I went back down stairs. I had to take lots of rests along the way and I could not be managing without my husband. Bless him!

I had midfoot fusion in November,2016. I was non weightbearing for 2.5 mos. with 2 casts, and scooter and walking boot after that.I've been in physical therapy 2 x's per week for the last 6 weeks. With each checkup, I've healed wonderfully according to tests results, but I don't feel like it was successful. Now my pain is moving to a different part of foot causing me lots of frustration. Dr said it could be 8 mos before I feel better. I'm not sure this has been worth it, as I still have as much pain as before. I also am impatient and am ready to be up and running. Hope this helps.

I am 11 weeks into recovery from midfoot fusion and could not be happier that i did it. I have 2 weeks of PT under my belt and my progress has been tremendous. Can't wait to see what another month brings and then finally getting back to a normal life.

I find this site so helpful and was hoping someone might be able to share their experience with midfoot bone fusion. I had surgery with one joint fused 12 days ago. Tomorrow is my first appt. with my surgeon. A bit nervous about stitches coming out because I've seen other posts where people have passed out etc.! Is it that painful and will I go into another plaster splint or fiberglass cast?

I, too, found this helpful. Thank you for the advice on the board. This midfoot fusion is no picnic and a very last resort, as we tried everything over the past 2 years. I am only 9 days post surgery. The non-weightbearing is a struggle, even with crutches and a knee scooter. I am 41 and normally very active. I have 4 kids at home. The feeling of "depression" is setting in. You aren't really told about that part of the recovery. I miss cooking, cleaning, just being "normal." Yesterday, I scooted on my bottom up the stairs just to fold laundry. Ha! I have a cast, but do wonder how soon I can venture out of this house. It seems like a lot of work just to get to the bathroom let alone go to a store. I hope as time goes on, it gets easier to be more mobile, even being NWB. I can't put my foot down for more than a few minutes without pain setting in. I suspect it's still very swollen underneath of this cast. I guess it varies from person to person, but I do wonder how long to expect that.

I had first foot fusion that lasted 12 years until next joints started to hurt. Then the next fusion and again it has lasted 14 years. I will now do the next set of joints. It's a long recovery but I had all those years pain free in between so well worth it. Key is going only to a foot and ankle doctor who does many fusions,, you are way to young to live in pain... mine were very successful!!!

I am laid up following Lisfranc surgery, so might share my experience so far with this useful board. I'm a very active woman in my forties. I especially like running. My injury had nothing to do with sport: I just tripped in my kitchen doorway. I'm still astonished at how much damage I did to my foot with such a trivial accident! Anyway, it was four weeks ago, and the whole thing was very complicated as I was in the middle of packing for an international move - kids, pets, the works - to a new country where I don't speak the language. I also was already dealing with a stress fracture in my left foot, so completely immobilised. It took me one week to discover that my second injury was so serious, not just a sprain.

I ended up with an interlude in London for surgery, one week ago. I went straight for fusion surgery, on the advice of the surgeon, which I completely agreed with. He fused 3 joints and I have 3 screws but no plates. I'm expecting to weight bear after around 2 months, and hope to get back to running in 2018, though for now just walking would be good! The surgeon said that if the screws are a problem he'll take them out after about a year. I have had barely any pain at all, and didn't use the narcotic meds after the first day as they made me feel sick. I just have a permanent tingling sensation, and my foot feels horrible instantly if it's not elevated. I'm spending 90% of my time in bed with my foot up on cushions, and lots of people have been helping out with my kids and house etc. People are kind, I have found.

For me the worst part was flying home after surgery and trying to keep my foot elevated in the airport and the plane. It was all horribly uncomfortable. I can put up with the inactivity if I feel like things are getting better. It's much much too hot where I am to go outside in the sun at all, so I'm taking vitamin D supplements.

I wanted fusion straight away for a couple of reasons. Firstly I want to get back to sport so I wanted a foot capable of taking the loading of running. I hope this will work. My surgeon is very experienced in treating professional athletes and that outlook was important to me. Secondly I was aware that not having fusion is often a temporary fix, with fusion surgery coming later. I wanted to try to go straight for a permanent solution if possible. Good luck to the rest of the Lisfranc club!

Hello Everyone,
I had a foot fusion on the 28th of April because when I was active duty I had severe breaks in my midfoot and after not healing right continued to do military stuff for 6 years after until I couldn't walk. I am concerned because my husband was redeployed a week after my surgery and I am a full time student and have lots of doctors appointments and a 1, 2 and 5 year old so I am unable to elevate much am in pain of course but with chasing after kids and not being able to relax I'm worried about it not fusing. Has anyone had a foot fusion not fuse? If so what part in your recovery were you unable to do that you think may of caused it. Thank you
