GLAD THAT I FOUND THIS SITE AND HAVE BEEN READING YOUR INFO. I AM GOING IN FOR FUSION OF THE RIGHT FOOT FROM THE BIG TOE DOWN TO THE BEND IN THE ANKLE. THEY ARE ALSO PLANNING ON REMOVING THE HEEL SPURS AT THE SAME TIME. MY DR KNOWS THAT I AM A CHRISTIAN BUT SAYS I WILL CURSE HIM ANYWAY BECAUSE THE PAIN WILL BE THAT BAD. HE TOLD ME I WILL BE IMMOBILE FOR 3 MONTHS. WE HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING ELSE AND IF I DON'T DO THIS SURGERY IT WON'T BE LONG BEFORE I WON'T BE ABLE TO WALK ON THIS FOOT AT ALL. DID YOU ALL COME HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL THE SAME DAY OF SURGERY OR GO INTO A REHAB FACILITY. I AM IN MY 60S LIVE ALONE AND DO NOT ASK PEOPLE FOR HELP. I AM A PERSON WHO WILL DO FOR OTHERS BUT WON'T ALLOW OTHERS TO DO FOR ME. DID YOU USE A WHEEL CHAIR CANE, CRUTCHES WHEN YOU CAME HOME? COULD YOU GIVE ME WHAT THE FIRST WEEK AFTER SURGERY IS REALLY LIKE. THANKS FOR ALL THE INFO
phone, medication etc in and make sure you always park with your good foot closest to where you want to stop. I park it next to the shower, hang towels over it and a couple of hops to the shower chair and I'm set. Make sure you have a towel to throw on the floor after so there's no chance of slipping. A shower chair is also a must to hire as they are far more stable than anything else and you will be quite disabled. Saying that, I also scoot down the stairs to my laundry ( thankfully the rest of the house is on one level), get my husband to bring the scooter down, then hoist myself back up. The first 2 weeks would certainly never have tried that though. You will need someone to help for those first couple of weeks as cooking etc will be tough...you will need to be elevating your foot well to help with the pain and swelling. As I said I hate horror stories, but it's also good to aware of possible complications. I have the best foot surgeon, he's already done both big toe joint replacements which have been very successful, but sometimes the unexpected happens. The nurses will check your toes after to make sure you have feeling and movement. I was in a back cast to the knee with heavy bandaging. The second night I had a feeling of strong pressure and throbbing so they cut the bandage
to relieve it. However it was only when I went back 2 weeks later that the doc saw I had a big haematoma under the wound and evidence of bleeding further up the leg. I was obviously sensitive to the blood thinning injections I was given in hospital and then sent home with. Injecting yourself is something else to get your head around! So it meant I couldn't go into a cast, instead straight into the boot with a promise I wouldn't try and walk on it. The upside is I could take it off to shower...bliss. Hope this has helped a bit, it's always better to know what you're in for and unfortunately a lot of surgeons tend to gloss over the facts. Good luck!

Hi gailc531... I've just found this site too and wish I had before my surgery, but I don't like to read horror stories! I do have some advice though as I had mid foot fusion plus bone graft from my ankle 4 weeks ago and am coming along pretty well considering I had a complication. So my op was a bit different to yours and your doc will advise you how long your hospital will be, but I was in for 3 nights and glad to be! The physio will come and see you to get you up with a walking ( hopping!) frame and they have to be satisfied you can shower etc before they'll give you the ok to go home. I had taken crutches in, but was apprehensive because I have arthritis in my hands and it hurt to use them. I'm about your age and have arthritis complicated by haemochromatosis which is iron overload. I had done some homework before the op and found that you can hire a knee scooter and so was relieved the physio had one for me to try in hospital. It is FANTASTIC and has saved my life. If you can drive you'll easily learn to use it and it leaves your hands free. We have timber floors with the odd rug ( a slight lift with your good foot will stop you tripping on the rug edge)and the timber is easier to move on than carpet, but it's heaps better than crutches. Get a bag with a long strap to sling across your body to put

GOD BLESS YOU FOR YOUR ANSWER. IT IS MOST HELPFUL. YOU DIDN'T SIGN A NAME BUT I WANTED YOU TO KNOW I RECEIVED IT. I HAVE HAD 63 SURGERIES AND PRAYING THAT THIS WILL BE THE 64TH AND LAST OF THEM. I HAVE TAKEN THOSE SHOTS BEFORE AS I SUFFER FROM BLOOD CLOTS WHICH DEVELOPED AFTER MY TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT. I AM ALLERGIC TO SO MANY MEDS THAT IT WILL A PROBLEM FOR THEM TO GIVE ME PAIN MEDS. I WILL GET BACK TO YOU WHEN I GET A SURGICAL DATE AND WILL KEEP YOU UPDATED. PLEASE KEEP ME UPDATED ON YOUR PROGRESS. WISHING YOU CONTINUED HEALING. IN HIS PRECIOUS NAME
something for you instead. Lastly ...re my previous post...I don't scoot down the stairs on my scooter...I go down on my bum!!
I SEE YOU DON'T SLEEP EITHER. I AM VERY INDEPENDENT AND DON'T ASK FOR ANYONE'S HELP. YOU KNOW THE OLD SAYING "NO MAN IS AN ISLAND" WELL I TRY TO DO IT ALL BY MYSELF. WHEN MY HUSBAND WAS ALIVE HE WOULD ALWAYS TRY BUT I DON'T GIVE IN OR GIVE UP. I AM A STUBBORN NEW YORKER AND SORRY TO SAY I AM A PROUD ONE. HOWEVER I NOW LIVE IN OHIO BUT STILL BELIEVE I CAN DO IT ALL MYSELF. AT LEAST I TELL MY SELF THAT.
MY DR HAS LEAD ME TO BELIEVE I WILL BE OFF MY FEET TOTALLY FOR 3 MONTHS. BUT I KNOW ME AND OTHERS THAT KNOW ME GIVE ME MAX 2 WEEKS. I WILL TELL YOU THAT THE PAIN NOW IS UNBEARABLE. I WAS GETTING TO THE POINT THAT I WAS GOING TO CHEW IT OFF MYSELF IF WE DIDN'T GET THE SURGERY SCHEDULED. I AM HOLDING OFF UNTIL JULY BECAUSE I HAVE MAJOR MEDICAL PROBLEMS AND NEED TO GET ALL DRS ON BOARD TO APPROVE THE SURGERY. I HAVE SEEN 2 DR ALREADY AND WILL BE SEEING THE NEXT 5 BY JUNE.
I AM GOING TO FL FOR A DAY AND A HALF TO SEE MY DAUGHTER AND FAMILY. I AM A CANCER PATIENT 3 TIMES AND WANT TO GO DOWN BEFORE THE SURGERY JUST INCASE I CAN'T GET DOWN THERE FOR A LONG WHILE.
WELL I KNOW I HAVE CHEWED YOUR EAR OFF AND I WILL ONCE AGAIN WISH YOU CONTINUED SUCCESS ON YOUR RECOVERY.
I PERSONALLY BLESS TO KNOW THAT WHATEVER HAPPENS IN MY LIFE IT IS A WIN WIN. IF I COME TRUE THE PROBLEM I'VE WON IF I GO HOME TO BE WITH JESUS I WON. I CAN'T LOSE EITHER WAY.

My name is Sabrina . 30 years old from US, California . Recovery from my second surgery on my right foot . In my first surgery my doc fused three mid-foot joints n put a ball bearing , fuses my hammer toe so a lot of things were done ! There was pin in my toe after the surgery . After my first surgery it was really difficult and painful I couldn't move around without a wheel chair . After 6-8 weeks starting wearing my boot . Oh yea my incision got bad too had to do intensive wound care ! Well started pt my foot was so messed up totally collapsing n pt didnn't help much either . It would hurt to to walk got customized Orthotics it's helped a little , but it was not a life time solution . So started looking for another doc ! So came across a very qualified dr. My second surgery was in April 17th his doc took all my hard ware out , ball bearing out lined up my toes . So I have a good feeling about this surgery . Waiting for my cast to come off . I was so happy to see that I'm not the only one going through this there others too .
I will keep an eye on how you and everyone else are doing, and keep you updated on my results. Lenardula
CAN WE EMAIL DIRECTLY FROM MY EMAIL TO YOURS. IT WOULD BE EASIER. MY EMAIL IS _[removed]_m
HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU
Interesting reading the posts. I had a completely crushed foot from a motorcycle accident 25 years ago. Now a mid foot fusion, metal plates and multiple screws, lots of bone spurs removed that had grown around old metal pins that had been removed. I'm 55 but very active and snow ski in winter. The surgeon worked to remove a large lump of bone and reshape the foot so it would fit in a ski boot. I had the stitches out in 9 days, right into an air boot. Now 20 days and walking on the heel of the boot with a cane. Can stand on it for a couple of hours then lots of burning pain and swelling. Elevation for an hour and back at it at work. Incisions (two big ones) mostly healed up as of today. Cant feel the top of my foot at all. Hope that will improve. Just working it as hard as possible and then resting. Hope to be skiing this winter. Doctor just says the bones and fusions will heal in about three months. Stay away from the drugs.
GLAD THAT U ARE DOING WELL AND PRAYING THAT YOU WILL RETURN TO DO YOUR SNOW SKING IN THE WINTER. KEEP ME UPDATED. THANKS FOR REACHING OUT.
