Hey All,
The morning pain symptoms you have all been feeling sound like it could be an ulcer, especially if it's associated with abdominal pain that wakes you up at night. You'll also want to look into gastritis which is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines. I don't believe in the whole IBS/spastic colon that lasts forever c**p so don't give up.
Most stomach problems that aren't food allergies or sensitivities can be caused by over-use of anti-inflamatory medication i.e. Advil, Motrin, Asprin (so Tylenol is your best bet), the over consumption of alcohol and/or caffein, smoking, high stress times in your life (not the main cause but definetly a contributing factor), prolonged use of the birth control pill or contraceptives (Plan B, morning-after pill) and after a trial of anti-biotics, more so if its a longer trial.
In the morning take your time (which im sure you do already), start your day with a glass of warm water with a quarter of a lemon's juice. Start your day lighter (a banana or warm fruit) and eat more an hour or so later. Don't skip meals.
In the mean time, before you get a proper diagnosis from a doctor or naturopath, which some of you might want to consider especially if your leaning towards food allergies/sensitivities, diet is a highly important factor.
Foods that tend to make stomach symptoms worse are:
Citrus fruits (excluding lemon), grapes and dried fruit
Beef, Pork, Shellfish, Eggs and processed/packaged meats
Nightshade vegetables (eggplant, tomato, potato, all peppers) and canned creamed or casseroled vegetables
Dairy, margarine, shortening, processed oils/dressings
Pop, alcohol, coffee or cafeinated tea and beverages
Cayenne pepper, paprika
Peanuts and pistachios
Gluten conatining grains and products (wheat, corn, barley, spelt, kamut, rye, oats) *oats are good so long as you aren't allergic to gluten
Most fats and sweeteners aggitate the stomach so stick to the healthy ones like olive oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, brown rice syrup, fruit sweeteners & molasses
Foods great for digestion include fish, blueberries, chicken, ginger, dark leafy greens, herbal teas the best being fennel, ginger or peppermint tea
I seems like there's lots you can't have but trust me you can get creative with what you can! It may also seem constricting but its not going to make your symptoms worse either. Going to restaurants is kinda tough but most places will put the sauce on the side or hold the dressing if you ask.
Taking probiotics (look into a decent brand or you're wasting your money) is theraputic to the stomach and intestines as well.
Research your symptoms and a possible diagnosis (DO NOT take any unprescribed medicine and limit ant-acids- you may not have enough acid in your stomach which can show similar symptoms). There is no reason for you to be kept in the dark, its also good to know what your doctor could be diagnosing you with. Good Luck!!!!

Regarding the above discussions. I have had stomach aches in the morning constantly since age 10. I am now 50. So the good news is you can live with it. The bads news is it's horrible. I've been tested constantly with no real results. However, I've narrowed the issues down to two possibilities.
1) Anxiety. I've always been anxious. When I started getting really sick (in my 30s), I, too, developed panic attacks. They have progressed to the point (along with my gastrointestinal issues) where I am mildly agoraphobic and hate to travel. Anxiety and stomache issues have greatly retarded my ability to reach my potential in a career and relationships. I've tried all the anxiety medications and nothing has worked for me. There is no question that anxiety greatly increases my stomach and abdomial issues. It may very well be that anxiety is also the cause of these issues, but many times I am sick even when no anxiety is present. Perhaps my stomch aches are just a recurrent pattern at this point.
2) Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Almost everyone I've ever encounter with these stomach issues have IBS. A few have celiac disease, but not many. Now, some good news. A couple years ago I discovered a website www.helpforibs.com The women who owns the site suffered for years. I've found her advice to be rock solid. Mainly, 1) follow the diet limitations 2) take stomach enzemes. 3) take probiotics
I have struggled because the diet options are so limiting that I get really bored. After following the diet for a week or so, when my stomach feels good, I inevitably go off it, and the aches return.
One final suggestion, take Omega - 3 fish oil daily. My mood and sense of well being has improved dramatically since I began taking fish oil. I also have had very little success with many doctors regarding IBS. They don't understand it, take it seriously, or believe it is diet oriented.

Its from eating too much too late at night. Your body digestion is altered when your sleeping and leaves you with sour stomach. Stop eating late at night and it goes away. At least it did for me.

I'm 6'5 and around 175lbs, 27 year old male. I have stomach bloating/pain every single morning but it tends to get better as I move around and then worsens again in the evening. I feel like this has been going on for almost 9 months and all began with severe shortness of breath and chest pain (at rest). Those issues have been much less severe recently and early on I had echo cardiogram, chest xrays, high res chest ct, pulmonary tests and no issues were found. I feel like I never "feel good". I've been using the "herbal" remedy which seems to be helpful for my stomach but makes my other chest related issues worse.

Hi, I am female, 28 years old, 5'3" 100lbs. I have had these sever stomach pains on and off all my life. It was much worse when I was a child and I often woke out of my sleep bent over with the pain, I will never forget it. My parents guessed I was constipated and added loads of extra fibre to my diet - it made no difference. As I got older the pain became less frequent. I have always thought I have a fast metabolism and get hungry every few hours. I have found that eating smaller meals regularly (4-6 per day) has really helped. Unfortunately my job has recently dictated how often I can eat, when I am busy I only have time for 3 meals. On these occasions I wake up in agony and have to force myself to eat a small breakfast. I usually feel OK about an hour after eating.
I do suffer from the common IBS symptoms also (I've never been tested) but I have always thought this was a separate issue. I've been avoiding the doctor for so long that I have finally resolved to get myself checked out in the next couple of weeks for ulcers, allergies and IBS. Hopefully there is a simple solution!!

I've had this problem for the past 10 months. i'm a 20yrld male . On and off when I wake up in the morning I have a naggging pain that can sometimes be so excruciating that I won't get out of bed. I've been to a gastroenterologist and he gave me a colonoscopy only to discover nothing wrong with me. Since then, I have not been to any doctors, but I've found the best solution is a little bit a of pot. It alleviates the pain and brings back my appetite. After I've eaten I usually feel much better, and not to high to start the day.

I think those of you with extreme abdominal pain should be tested for Crohn's. It is especially common for this disease to surface during late teen years and early twenties and are experiencing weight loss. Doctor's often forget to test for it. It is very very serious and you should find out!
My boyfriend randomly lost forty pounds and then was hospitalized. He almost died because he couldn't absorb the nutrients from food he was eatin. Much less, eating was a painful experience for him.
It is treatable. Get tested. ?

I know this topic is pretty old, but I HAVE to reply to it. I have this exact same problem that randomly started in high school. I'm a male, 18 yrs old, ~5'8" and ~ 155 lbs. The thing with me is that I feel horrible sick when I wake up early in the morning. For example, during high school I would wake up at 5:30 am everyday to go to school. When I would wake up I felt horrible. I had nausea, really bad stomach aches, and if I ate anything I just wanted to vomit. Oddly, if I wake up later in the day (e.g. 8 or 9 am), then I don't feel sick. I don't know if it's something really serious, but it makes me feel REALLY sick in the mornings. Can it be Celiac disease?

I've the same problem as a few of you: If I'm forced to wake to an alarm early in the morning, my stomach (lower actually, towards the intestines) throws a fit. I can usually force down a small amount of food but it's not pleasant. A trip or two to the bathroom and I'm good to go (but only after that). If I wake up naturally, I've got no problem at all. I almost always get 7.5-8 hours of sleep a night regardless of when I have to get up and my diet's good.
So basically, if I'm forced to get up early, my stomach twists itself (but will go away after a few trips to the bathroom, most often within the time span of an hour, and usually with diarrhea), but if I wake up naturally, no problems. It's not diet or amount of sleep (those are good), it's not what I have to do during the upcoming day causing stress (because I can force myself up on a lazy Saturday and it's the same deal).
I went to the doctor, he had had me do a whole bunch of blood work and then sent me for an ultrasound and to the gastroenterologist. The blood work came back clean, the ultrasound found nothing, and the gastroenterologist (after a consultation) said the problem wasn't serious enough to warrant an endoscopy and was most likely nothing. Long story short, the docs all believe it's in my head. Between the negative test results and the problem only occurring when I'm forced awake early in the morning (which probably doesn't sound credible to the docs; more like I'm a kid trying to get of going to school in the mornings; but at 23 years old I'm not trying to get out of doing things by making up an illness), I can't really blame them as they can only treat what they can diagnose. Still, it'd be nice to know that this wasn't something in my head (and therefore could subsequently be FIXED).
The good news is that I can reset my internal clock; after a few weeks of getting up at a certain time I can bypass the major effects on most days. The bad news is that it takes a while to get to that point and if for some reason I have to get up earlier for a one-day thing, the problem's there. I've had this since late in high school and have yet to find a way around it. I'm in the range of normal weight for my height (although closer to the underweight side).
What really bothers me about this problem is that it limits options and sucks the fun out of things. Getting up early to leave on a trip is rarely possible. Participating in an activity that's scheduled in the early morning (in the 6-6:30am range) is often a nightmare as I have to be sure I have easy access to a toilet (because there is a 100% chance I'll have to use it as a product of my stomach ache, and it's not a gradual feeling...one second it's just a stomach ache and the next I really have to go).
Part of me wants to believe it's in my head so I can deal with it, but the other part knows it's not (unless it's become ingrained in my subconscious that if i get up early, my stomach will hurt). I know I'm not the only one who suffers these early morning stomach aches and hopefully somebody will find a reason for it one of these days. In any case, good luck.

Well... i have to say that a lot of these entries have helpe me out a lot. I also am one of the lucky ones with morning sickness. My stomach hurts so bad every single morning. And then again throughout the day. Usually before bed and when i wake up though. It is closely associated with anxiety Ihave noticed. I don't realy know what to do it started when i was 15 and started taking sleeping pills. I stopped taking them and the pain went away. Now in the last year it has came back. But im still not taking the sleeping pills. I have noticed that pot works. But what do you do when you aint got none. Well im 19 5'5 and 120 pounds. So if anyone has a medical breakthrough on this subject it would be great to know.

I suffer from the same symptoms and interestingly enough I do not suffer from them when I take anxiety medication. I suffered as a child, I have memories from the age of 5 onwards which didn't stop untill I started on the meds when I was 14, I'm twenty now and I'm off the medication, probably not forever but I feel like soon enough I will be independant from the meds, one of the major issues though is the stomach ache, which is mild at the moment but will worsen when I have to rise erly for lectures in October. This is something I would like to fix before returning to uni.

I as well have the same problem, I'm 24 5'8 and average weight. Every morning except the morning's when I'm not rushed I feel soo sick. The pain is about 2 inches under my chest area and sometimes if it's really bad I will vomit. Most of the time I will wake and have stomach pain and end up going to the bathroom about 20 mins later after that I still feel sick sometimes even worse. This effects my work and my personal life, I often think my husband may think Im faking because it happens so often. I was on nexium and ibs medication but the ibs medication made me sleepy and I was unable to take it anytime around work. This has been going on for about a year now. Also I have unexplained hot flashes, that literally take over my body and make me sweat so bad. Please help!!

Honestly guys, I have this same problem. The best thing you can do to stop this is by not eating late night snacks, but if it happens, i recommend buying a bottle of ranitidine and taking one right before bed. And if all of this fails, get yourself ready for a medicinal wake n bake, and bring on the breakfast!
