Im 16, underweight and just starting sixth form. I have been having this problem since high school, but i think i have found the problem. It definetly involves sleep, as throughout the summer holiday i have never had it and when i returned to school its back again. Aswel as this a couple of days in the holiday when i got up early it happed too. Due to this evidence I think the problem could be undigested food, that lies in your horizontal stomach overnight, and needs time to properly digest? Waking early cuts this time sort and the acidic food continues to slosh around your stomach until it gets digested (around lunch time for me). So to stop this i recommed either eating less (or no) food before a early morning the next day, going to bed earlier to make up your lost hours on your 'lie in' and/or eating liquid absorbing foods in the morning such as crackers. But remember this is deviced by my noledge and understand and is not profesional. Please tell me if these tips help. Thanks :-)

I posted this about a month ago, and have been experimenting with the advice i gave over this time. I have found out that the main factor involved is the food you eat in the morning. i used to have cereal and milk in the morning and commonly had these symptoms, but recently i have ONLY had dry foods like toast and crackers when i wake up and have noticed a huge improvement. Most mornings on this diet i have had no symptoms at all 8) , except a few days when i had little sleep. The food i consumed at night seemed to make no difference (unless it contained alcohol of course). Again i hope this helps someone, and i would love to hear what you think. :-D

I am in a similar boat. 20 year old male, underweight (135), 6'1".
I use to experience this primarily in the morning, and now it seems to be any time of day.
Eliminating all wheat and all dairy has seemed to help some, but the smallest indulgence can send me grabbing my sides in pain- while other times I can get away lucky. Please continue to post :-)

Guys
I know exactly what you're talking about. See your doctor, do all neccessary tests as it is important to make sure nothing serious is going on. But I bet your test will get back fine ;-) Because what you are describing is anxiety symptom. Specialy that so many of you mentioned that if you have lay in, sleep longer, wake up "naturally" you are fine. Diet and medicine can ease your symptoms but I strongly believe reason lays in your minds and axiety. It is pretty hard to get rid of it, it is easier to get use to it, go to the loo few times in the morning, wait till the pain and nausea is gone and than go about your day... But you can get rid of it for good - read about anxiety, learn some relaxation techniques, meditation, yoga, autohipnosis etc. A lot of things you can do at home and for free. As as soon as you get rid of the anxiety - morning cramps, pain and nausea will go away:)
Best of luck!!

There may be some truth in this, but I have yet try any of the techniques or figure out another solution.
I'm a 21 year old male, underweight. (Seems like a lot of people here are?! I wonder if we're underweight because of the stomach problems or we get stomach problems from being underweight?)
Anyways, I have a long list of symptoms I've had since high school. It started with occasional heart palpitations where my heart would go to 170 beats per min with just a simple movement. It would usually stop in a few minutes. I also started out with hand tremors that spread to every single muscle in my body when i got to college. I thought maybe it was because I was out of shape, but I found it in my neck and face, some accessory breathing muscles and even my vocal muscles. I went to neurologists for this and they found nothing. The doctor, hesitant to put me on anything addictive, said this was "just the way I'm wired" and said I had to live with it. My muscles shake when I move but not sitting still. Anyways, summer of last year I started to have stomach aches in the morning as you all described. I thought maybe it was due to my odd sleep schedule (going to bed at 3 in the morning and waking up at 12 noon) and I thought I screwed up my system. I never ate breakfast the previous semester due to lack of time, but now that I had timed, I found I couldn't eat even if i wanted to. It was like a burny achy feeling that made my stomach somewhat tender to touch. The best I can describe it was feeling like someone punched me in the gut every morning and my stomach had a bruise on it that I irritated whenever I ate. I also felt belchy as well although no burps brought relief with them. I soon went to a gastro who started me out on acid reducing medicine which didn't work and then switched me to a low dose of tricyclic antidepressant (for an offlabel use) to take the edge off of the pain and give me somewhat of an appetite. This seemed to work for a while until my body must've gotten used to it. Then last week, I went to my primary care doctor because I have been feeling oddly dizzy lately (I felt it was due to stopping taking the tricyclic which I think may have been doing more than I gave it credit for) and he said pretty much everything I described can be attributed to depression and anxiety. I found this hard to believe that these two things can cause physical symptoms but he said that it was entirely possible. I also never considered myself that depressed or anxious. If I am depressed, then I have been living with it for many many years and I'm used to it (I think I really am depressed though), and as for anxiety, I never get panic attacks, although my stomach problems seem to get worse before a test. I'm wondering if it is all subconscious...
My doctor wanted to try my out on Lexapro as a solution, however, I couldn't get past the first dose. That night, I had the worst gnawing burning stomach pain I've had in a while, as if the Lexapro set me back several months in slowly regaining my appetite. I could hardly eat anything the next day. It made my heart race as well as make me more shaky than usual. I still have yet to speak with my doctor about this (we keep missing each other's calls) and I'm wondering whether or not he'll try me with something else. I really don't want to go on an antidepressant because honestly they scare me, and being a pharmacy student doesn't help. I may now look into other methods like relaxation techniques and such or maybe therapy of some kind. But I'm truly sick of all this. I'm tired every day no matter how much sleep I get, and ironically compared to others who have posted, MORE sleep makes it worse than LESS sleep. I've felt better more often after getting 4-5 hours of sleep compared to 7+ hours. I've slept for 10+ hours on weekends and feel like c**p when I get up.
With any luck, I'll get down to the bottom of this mess, and if I find that anxiety really is the culprit, I'll let everyone know. I've been ruled out for Celiacs and possibly Crohns (although I'm not sure, I don't have the major symptoms). I'm leaning to maybe some food intolerances but I'm also scared I may not be absorbing my food correctly. I can't seem to gain any weight, and the dizziness is making me all the more skeptical. I hope I'm not hypoglycemic or anything. I'm also wondering if this is a problem with people who suffer from fast metabolisms since most of us seem to be underweight. Oh well. I just know I'm getting sick of doctor's looking at me with puzzled/frustrated expressions and not being able to figure out what it is.
I think I'm going to go out for a walk now. It's a beautiful day outside.

I have had the same problem for ten years. I wake up every morning sick to my stomach or with pain discomfort and bloating. I usually throw up or induce vomiting (in order to feel better) throw up a whole bunch of stomach acid or nothing at all. After that I usually feel good enough to eat something (well, after I ingest some herbs).
It doesn't matter what kind of diet I have. I tried vegetarian, gluten free, raw food, vegan. I have seen a gastroenterologost and had an upper endoscopy and colonoscopy. Nothing but some abrasion on my esophagus from puking. They "suspect" ulcers that come and go for no reason and put me on "protonix". It seems to help, but the problem is still there....I can just get though the day now.
I have also seen a endocrinologist and had EVERY blood test done under the sun. Nothing there either.
Its very frusterating. I am a 24yo female 130lbs very athletic and very active (I work with horses)....I should be healthy. It started happening when I moved from New York to Virginia...and has been happening ever since.

Hey I have the same thing, what did the doctor say about it??? At first I thought it was because of the milk in my cereal or that I ate breakfast whereas usually I wouldn't . Please reply.

heyy...im 14 and severly underweight (i cant give you my exact weight, because i dont know it, because i am banned from weighing myself and when the doctors weigh me they wont tell me what i weigh, because i have anorexia and bulimia) personally i find it interesting that most of us that get this pain are underweight. That could possibly be a cause.

Wow, am I glad that i've found this post! Just knowing that i'm not alone makes this all the better. I experience pretty much the exact same thing that has been going on with you guys. I'm a 20 year old male, 132 lbs, 6 foot. For the last 3 or 4 years i've had stomach pains in the morning. It was terrible when I was in high school. I had gone to the doctors, which told me that it was caused by an anxiety disorder. I was given medicine for 30 days. After that, they came back again. My stomach pain made me miss alot of school, and I ended up having to drop out my senior year. Some days are good, some days I pretty much can't get out of bed. I've been suffering from panic attacks for about the last year now. I don't know if its my stomach which is causing my anxiety to get worse, or the other way around. I've been checked for a thyroid disorder, and the doctor that I saw about 9 months ago insists it's an anxiety disorder, which is why i'm seeing a therapist now, and am not on any medication. So far, i'm still experiencing stomach pain and good days and bad days. I can't really pin how I feel on eating anything, or doing anything than I do on my good days. I really wish I could find a clear-cut answer for what has been plaguing us, because for me I am about to lose my job that I've had for 3 1/2 years because they're tired of me calling out or coming in tardy because of my stomach aches. Having this problem has made me not want to venture outside of my house, and it makes me feel worse when I see my friends going off and doing things that I know I couldn't do because of my problem. I wish everyone here the best of luck, and hope we can find out what's wrong.
By the way, here are my symptoms if anyone concurs:
-Stomach ache which is worse in the morning, seems to be fine by the evening.
-Dry mouth, drink alot of water.
-Symptoms of anxiety disorder, occasional rapid heart beat, shakiness.
-I get full after eating a small amount. Like, I know I can eat more, but my body won't let me.
-After a meal, for about 2 hours I feel really full, and burp often.

I have had morning stomach aches for as long as i can remember. my mom and sister suffer from the same so until my symptoms became severe last year we never thought much about it. i am 30, 5'6", and 165lbs. i will be 31 in two months. i have a first shift job so needless to say Monday through Friday i awake to an alarm clock. Weekends days are hit and miss, some weekends i wake up sick some weekends i don't (no alarm clock on the weekends). no one has been able to give me answers as to what is wrong. the pain is normally a steady ache, if i vomit i normally feel better within an hour or two. i can not eat until late afternoon or else the pain and nausea worsen. Due to migraines i have been tracking food, sleep, stress, and basically had my habits under a microscope for the past year. there does not appear to be any patterns or triggers that make this worse.

I also get stomach aches and nausea. Started when I was 17 with vomiting (found trigger foods, fast food and fried foods) which I was able to correct with diet. I lived with almost constant nausea for years before realizing that I might not have to but since I've been trying to find triggers I haven't gotten better yet. I'm 24 now, been a vegetarian for a year, recently have been reducing my dairy intake trying to remove it completely to see if I have a dairy intolerance. My doctor is having me get an ultrasound to check for gallstones (go tomorrow) as well as some blood work to check other things. I do have anxiety but my stomach aches don't appear to be triggered by higher stress (though I haven't tracked this thoroughly). I'll post if my tests come back with anything.

Hi!
Im 22years old, male, and have had this problem on and off for some years.
Ive found out that in the beginning i had reflux problems, which ment that my stomach was making to much acid and it was irritating my system. This was probably due to crappy food (kebabs, brugers, to much spicy and bad-fat food). During this time i had these stomach pains each morning alot, and it felt like going to the toilet was the only thing helping.
This problem eventually became better when i cut all the junkfood and severly limited alcohol consumtion! Even dough my acid problems where fixed i still had some morning pain/nausea problems for some time. Some bad-fats gave me problems to.
The only period since i got it where i felt allmost perfect was while I lived in Indonesia as and exhcange student for 5 months. So, what was the change there? I ate allmost exclusivly meat and veggies! Only healthy asian stuff! No junkfood, no pasta, no bread!! And i felt awesome! No mornings stomach problems anymore, and all good! And also i could drink / use all the olive oil i wanted without any problems! Also all the coffee i wanted! Before i would have gotten lots of acid and bad mornings from this!
Now that i got back to Norway again - started eating more regular food (bread, more soda, some junk here and there, less veggies) i have started getting the morning nause/pain again.....
Lead me to believe that part of the cure is to cut all weat, cut all junkfood, cut all milk, cut allmost all alcohol, and eat lots of veggies (broccoli, carrot, etc - astian stuff) and healthy meat that is not to processed! And, trying to get your sleep might be important too! Cuz waking up from the alarm compared to waking up naturally sometimes makes a diffrenece i think. Maybe setting the alarm to gradual increase in sound or something.. >Good luck to you all :-)
