You're not alone at all. I'm 35 now, and I've been chewing mothballs (not swallowing) off and on since I was 15. I have a severe iron deficiency, but it honestly hasn't stopped me. I don't know if I can stop, but I hope it's possible. I've had issues with my teeth as well that I think are related to this....

I have the same problem i chew it but I don't swallow. I am married. And I doubt whether I m pregnant now, will naphthalene can be found in urine tests or does it affect?

Are you still eating?

It isn't detected in urine, it's technically a gas not a drug. I've been doing it so long but I've never told a Dr. or been busted by a urine test.

i know this is over a year now but i hope you see it. I have the same problem, I started sniffing mothballs, then I began eating them then I became addicted to the smell and taste of the toilet deodorizer. Luckily for me I dont think anyone has noticed yet, maybe my boyfriend has but hasnt said anything but I really want to stop and I wish I knew how to, I literally just sent an order for some now before I came upon this thread, wah.

I also now have to order mothballs online, they stopped making the old fashioned kind and now they come in packets. Oddly, I have the addiction which is wierd enough...but I also have a preference. I really feel like there's no hope for me, if I smell them it's like I have to get a hand full and chew them. I almost went crazy because I couldn't find the 'real' naphthalene mothballs anywhere online, and when I finally found them I've ordered a total of 36 boxes. Literally no one knows because I'm too embarrassed to tell.

And to answer your question, I think the majority of us chew without swallowing. But it's honestly no less dangerous, we all appear to have iron deficiency issues that are very severe. Anemia can cause the cravings, and chewing/sniffing mothballs makes the anemia worse. It's a sad vicious cycle.

How many Balls once in a day you all chew?
Reply
It's not every day for me, but I probably chew about 20 each time I do it. Rinse my mouth, then brush my teeth in an attempt to mask the smell....
This is NOT to be taken for a joke, or as something others should try. I hope to be free of this problem, it is such an awful feeling to lack the self control to just stop like I need to.
