I had my first muscle spasm yesterday and today my doctor told me it was just a muscle spasm, but I don't do any sports at all. I also had an ECG but wont get my results til later. Anyways, my doctor told me to take motrin and I did and it did stop for a few hours. Also, hot water.

Hey guys,

I'm from Singapore. If you are like me, who have experienced scary chest pains (thinking you are having a heart attack), and all the heart scans and whatever test results came back normal, don't panic! It is just trigger points, i.e. abnormal tight band of muscle tissues. Go and read up The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Clair Davies if you want to know what trigger points are. According to the book (and other sources on the Internet), trigger points in the pec minor and pec major (chest muscles) can mimic a heart attack. Just type "trigger points pec muscles heart attack" and you'll get what I mean.

Anyway, what you need to do get rid of those chest muscle trigger points, thereby getting rid of those pseudo "heart attack" is to massage your chest muscles. However, if those muscles are overly tight, in my experience self-massage wouldn't suffice.

What we need are not anxiety medications but the help of a highly-qualified soft tissue therapist [who knows e.g. Active Release Technique (ART) or Graston Technique] to release those pec muscles. Or for faster results in my experience, seek the help of a Dry Needling practitioner (dry needling is not the same as acupuncture - the only similarity is the needle) to stop those muscle spasms in the chest. The session not be a pleasant one with needles being stuck in your chest but it's worth it.

I'm having a relapse of those "heart attacks" as I'm tying this, but I'm telling myself not to panic because I'm telling myself it's nothing more than a trigger point.

Take care!

Hi, I think your son has trigger points in his scalene muscles (part of the neck muscles). If he raises his arm up and gets relief, he may be suffering from Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Don't be worried by this scary term - it just means the trigger points in the scalene muscles are compressing certain nerves. The scalene muscles can also cause trigger points in the chest muscles. Look up The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook for more information.

I have been having muscle spasms in my chest arean on and off for about 10 years, even during pregancy (which made labour a doddle next to this pain). The pain was almost unbearable ( mostly comes when im lying down or even asleep) and would last for about 20mins, go as quick as it came but would come back again many times. I was told eventually by a doctor that it was IBS which I very much doubt.  Anyway I was prescribed a tablet called mebeverine and to take it with zantac which has been very effective.  If i have an episode an take the pills it will still last about 15mins but it will be the only one i have instead of 3 or 4 and if i take it early enough the spasm will not totally take hold and fade.

I can't get rid of musule spasams when I have had them since thursday 11th april 2013 at 10:14pm. I went stright to A&E and they said it's muscle grabbing pains and I think they are not because they feel worse it feels like kidney infection and something to do with the liver if your eyes go yellow

WOW I thought I was the only one, I have knots in the muscles in my upper back around the center and get cramps, full pain and pulling in the center of my chest and my neck. Had EKGs, Ultra sound, full body bone scan, blood tests, barium X-ray of throat and stomach, x rays etc etc. no one can figure out what it is but I started going to a chiropractor who also does therapeutic massage, getting better but still present. I also started doing Yoga helps too but still get flare ups recently started taking pro biotic and cut back on my glutens that's helping. I'm 46 had a life of injuries so some of this is normal aging but pain is not normal and we have other options than just pain pills. Takes time but I'm confident with a proper diet, hydration, alternative complimentary therapies life can get better. Don't give up keep moving.

I had it all done..every test..and then this one ER visit.and I had a lot of those .I found out the spasms were coming from my neck.glad to know it was not my heart..because I was fearful of that..but now I know Its just not me..still having them but would love to find somethin that will provide longterm relife..and I hate that they happen when I go to bed..and try to rest...because now Im not getting any rest..and I tired in the mornings..even afriad to go to sleep sometimes, when I've had a spasm.
