I had a slerical buckle put on to correct RD on March 30th. My pupil is still very much dialiated and I wondered if anyone else had this problem. My surgeon said this isn't something to be concerned about at this time; that the muscle is constrained by the buckle and it takes time for it to become used to the buckle and work properly. If you've had this same issue, please let me know how you dealt with it.
Thank you.
Hello there Ali.
My sister had scleral buckle procedure last year. She also needed to repair hers retinal detachment.
The first two months for her were very tense, she couldn't relax and was very scared that something would go wrong. But, over time, she learned to keep calm and her condition improved, which became apparent on doctor examination.
Only real problem is "barometer issue". She can sense a change in weather, on the basis of tingling in the eye where buckle is. But, that's something normal for that procedure.
Only real fears can be caused by swelling around eye and increasing pain, but as I can see, you don't have anything like that.
Hope this will help, and I wish you good luck with recovery process.
Thank you for your reply.
How long did it take the muscle that controls pupil dialation to work? That's really my concern because I can't drive until it returns to normal.
It depends from person to person.
It often takes six to eight weeks to get the needed vision. As I recall, my sister was recovering for about whole nine weeks.
In meanwhile, you should stick to the doctor's orders. Wear eye patch at night, sunglasses at day, and avoid much reading.
As for driving, that depends on surgeon's opinion. It's best that you ask him, but I think that you'll need to wait about one more month or so.
