Hey everyone.
I'm starting to get serious about running, and I need a plan of action. Also, I play Ultimate Frisbee, which is so hardcore, and I get tired pretty quickly. I get discouraged fairly easily because I tire so fast, my legs ache pretty quick as well.
I'm female, 25, 5'11", and about 165lbs. I'm a size 10/12 (pants) and an 8/medium on top. Honestly, my reasons for getting into running are pretty selfish. I want to lose weight and get in great shape. I don't plan on running a marathon or anything, I just want to be able to run for longer than five minutes at a time! I have weak knees (I go in for arthroscopic surgery on both on May 30), so that's a bit of a problem for me too.
Just to give you an example, I set out today for a run/walk. I was out for 2 hours, doing intervals of running until I couldn't, then walking, and alternating. I run a river trail with lots of ups and downs. I want to be able to run continuously for longer than I can, and need a way to build up my endurance.
I'd really appreciate any help/advice anyone has.
Thanks!

I don't really know about arthoscropic surgery but after you get it you will not be able to run for at least a month correct?
Since there is so little time inbetween your surgery and now, and since to be honest you will lose almost all of your fitness in that month, I think would you really should do now is strength training. That way, you will strengthen your legs, so that when you return from the surgery you will be even stronger and better equipped to start your running.
The best case scenario is for you to get a gym membership and go to the gym a few times a week, using the machines there
If you can't do that, there are plenty of things you can do at home, like calf raises on stairs or a box, leg lifts, etc. You can find stuff on the internet.
You can also do situps and work on your diet to lose weight
Yeah, all good tips. I am in okay shape now, but I figured going strong beofre my surgery might help in terms of recovery time. The surgeon really hasn't given me any information on recovery, just that I should take three weeks off of work... get real! I've booked two. I also want to be able to start working out and playing Ultimate ASAP after surgery...
I'm trying to watch my carb intake, nothing insane like Atkins, but just reducing the amount of refined carbs I eat. I eat pretty healthily (?) now, but I need to start ramping up my protein intake too. I have two personal trainers in my family - I know the importance of protein!

Sorry for the double post...
Set out again today - blew out a shoe! Guess it's time for a new pair. Last time I went to a specialty store and got Asics to help correct my overpronation. Perhaps I'll do the same this time, maybe they can hook me up with some with extra cushioning for me!
One other question - is it normal for your hands to swell up when you run? Anyone else have this problem?

Hmmm, I always thought I took in adequate salt...
Good article though.
I have been drinking a whole pile of water lately, like 3-4L per day. I also don't drink on my runs, only before and after.
It's pretty annoying, although my hands don't go numb or tingle, they sure do swell!

Nice avatar!
If you enjoy running just get out every other day and do what you have been doing. It doesn't sound like you have a specific time frame to reach any fitness goals and with the looming surgery you are likely going to lose a lot of the aerobic conditioning you gain up until then.
You just need to find an activity you enjoy and get into the habit of doing it. If running is the thing for you stick to it! Once you get yourself to the point where you can run 2 or 3 miles without stopping and you still enjoy the sport, you can start looking into 5 or 10k races that you can use to motivate you to further.
Good luck!

I'm from Saskatchewan, btw.
I am enjoying running (running/walking really :P ) - and I feel really good afterwards. Sometimes its difficult to get motivated, but once you get going all is well. Blisters, bum knees and all...
Next purchase is new shoes - the old Asics GT2000's have had it.

Aight, maybee im no pro, but i do train with a lot of people who is new with running. Most people when they start off, go way to fast and die 3 min later, go slow, and if u can go run in trails, keeps u mind off u getting tired. If you can, try to eat 1 hour before u go running.
When u go running, jog extremely slow for about 15 min for ur warmup, do about 5-15 min of stretch, jog slightly faster for about another 10-15(not too fast) then just run back home slowly and stretch back home.
Another advice is not to run on a road with a lot of traffic, it makes ur mind think that ur slow and ull go faster and soon run out of energy.
Hopefully this helps u a bit

Running for 15 minutes straight is hard for me...I know, I know, I'm lame.
Tried on a pair of Nike Shox, the 2:49. So nice. $200 though...ugh!
