and have regular workups done and we will work from there. I'm really nervous. I never really took the time to educate myself about diabetes, and I still don't know a whole lot about it. I certainly know that I need health insurance though! Does anyone have any adivse or tips on how to cope, or how to manage your diabetes, or good doctors in the San Diego area?
Hi Kelly,
I can understand that you feel your world is changing, and it is. You've been diagnosed with Type II diabetes. Now, what did your doctor tell you to do, besides the testing center? I know money may be tight but you really should see an endocrinologist to find out ALL you can about YOUR specific case. Everyone is different. Some people can manage their diabetes with diet. Others need medication, either pills or injections.
There are lots of places that can help you with reduced cost or even free diabetic testing supplies. Check them out.
I urge you not to delay. Not treating your diabetes can lead to loss of limbs or vision, due to problems with the blood vessels.
Good luck.
Thanks for the help and advice! I wonder how people coped on their own before forums like this were available? I am working on getting better insurance so that I can get to an endocrinologist and find out about my case. in the meantime, I'm going to be taking my health a LOT more seriously! Thank you so much for taking the time!!!
Did he/she tell you what your numbers are or how serious your problem is?
I am at the age where type II is very common. I had aheart bypass surgery 16 years ago and was in cardiac rehab after. It looked like I was about the only one in there who DIDN'T have diabetes. The nurses were quite surprised I didn't just due to my age and heart problem. My doctor is watching it closely but so far no problem.
My RNP at the VA gave me a meter to test on a regular schedule but the numbers are always in the normal range so we kind of let that slide after a while. My home town doctor draws blood just to have a glucose test done at each semiannual physical apparently so he has the result at that exact time. I get a printout from the VA of the tests they do so I can give him a copy. It looks like they test about everything imaginable as it's two ages long and whenevr I hear about some test on a TV show I go look at my latest printout and it's there. My doc calls me as soon as he gets the results to tell me all is OK.
They keep me so well informed about those things I'm having trouble with the fact they didn't tell you a lot more. Your doctor should know where you can go to get any help you need. I can't believe he/she just said go look it up on the internet.
You live in CA where one of the biggest proponents of "Obamacare" resides. "You have to pass it, to find out what's in it" Feinstein. Try writing to her office. She should be able to help you. I can't give you her URL on the forum but if you Google her you will get plenty of links.
