I think people have different bouts with sciatica so yours might be a little more severe. It's only been a week. My pain was a good 3-4 weeks but didn't have burning down the leg. My calf is numb now and I often get a shot of pain to my toes in the middle of the night. Hang in there until the nerve starts to settle. You are not alone. It's been 3 years for me.

I also have numb toes my little pinky, and the others just tingling. I also have it on the side of my left foot and a little way up the left leg to the calf. this is all after a bout of sciatica a few months ago. im going to a spinal clinic on Monday and they will asses me and decide if im to have an mri scan to see whats going on. im not in any pain at all and havnt been for 3 months now its just I told my doctor about the sensation in my leg and foot and she got me an appointment at the msk spinal clinic. I have worried my self stupit to the point I started having panic attacs as im worried it might be something worse than a slipped disk (I don't know why) but I cant stop myself from this worry. im 31 years old with 3 young children 13,8,2. just thought id say that I have the similar problems to you.

I think the symptoms of sciatic are diverse. I have been diagnosed with sciatica by neurologist and mine started with numb toes on both sides and numb foot on one side all of which still persist some six months on. Since then I find it difficult to sit on my bottom as this becomes numb and uncomfortable and creates burning pain down my leg, It also hurts in the back of my thigh sometime son walking . When it is bad I cannot touch my toes or lift one leg straight in the air. I don't suffer from severe pain just discomfort or numbness. I have asked for 2nd opinion as getting worse not better.

Sorry to read that. I have the same numbness / tingling. I don't know if its of any help but I have had a lower back problem of about 5 yrs and while experimenting with blended flaxseed oil (with some other oils) I noticed feeling coming back into my back for about the first time in about 3 years. In the form of a gradual debilitating pain and lock up. Which was pretty surprising. It was after about 1 week of taking flaxseed oil blend which I was taking to improve my energy levels with c.f.s/m.e. The oils made me tired but improved sleep and mood.  I stopped taking them at the time as it was weighing me down too much. But am revisiting this again. Again don't know if it is of any help - but I am slightly more open-minded now about inflammation and pain. Both of those are always seen as the bad guys - but how else could a problem right itself if it wasn't through those processes? Just a suggestion.

So many of you who has sciatica problems and I know it is very painful. You will not find any healers anywhere but in Canada who can give you complete relief. I am sorry to say this but it is the truth. In my region, I am the only one who can perform relief and I cover 4 provinces in Canada. Sciatica is the cause of many nerves who are pinched and / or dislocated and there is only one way the help and at the same time stop the pain. You might want to see a massage therapist who might help you some but do not expect a miracal.

Good luck

To all sufferers, check out Dr. Sarnos book 'Healing Back Pain' - really positive message even if you dont agree withe the sentiments. I have had a numb left foot for 3 years now after a bout of sciatica but I am not letting it stop me doing things like walking, driving gettign out etc. . Fear of the problem can make it worse. We can all heal and a positive mind helps a lot - I wish everyon on this site good luck and hope they get 'better'.

Like you I am a runner too and I am determined not to let this cripple me. I experienced the unbearable pains in the right leg one night, no pain mess worked. The next morning the pain was replaced by numbness. This was about three weeks ago and The numbness is still there, Reading the other posts I guess it may be there for good. How are you doing now?j

Hello, I have a lower back disc that herniates ocassionally, but while it was herniated I had a fall sideways where i landed heavily on my right foot.  5 days in hospital, 2 MRIs, 30mls of morphine and an epidural later, I went home and have manged to get off the endone, diazapan & steroids within 2 months.

Long story short, 6 months later, I have thankfully lost the limp in my walk and any pain!

My right leg now has numbness from my 3 smaller toes up the rh side of my foot, calf and back of upper leg, similar to the first post in this excellent blog.

In the past two months I have started to have twitching in my rh buttock and sometimes left and other parts of my lower body, not painful just spasms.

Today I found I could the rh buttock twitch by moving my rh foot toes wards, bizarre.  I am worried that the nerve spasms are possibly increasing since the accident/epidural.

I am sharing this story to say there are improvements but also worrying developments happening :-)  54 yo male

Aunt V, you are the first person to say what I have said. I would rather give birth than go through this again. I am finally seeing light at the end of this tunnel. It started as tingly stuff in my calf and over the course of 3 months progressed to full blown piriformis syndrome -- glute pain, nonstop muscle spasm and crazy sciatica to the point where I couldn't even walk on crutches. At its peak I could barely crawl. I went to my primary care doc --- xrays looked good so no back issues, but the pain...good God in heaven!!!! Steroids, muscle relaxants, acupuncture, PT, stretching, therapy massage, OTC (Aleve), non-inflammatory foods/drinks, sleeping with pillows between knees, salt baths, hot showers, moist heat, ice, all of it -- no relief! Finally after giving it time to simply heal, this thing is easing up. I'm not "there" yet, but at least I can walk about a city block before the crazy pain kicks in again and then I rest it for a minute. It's literally one step at a time...each day gets a tiny bit better. For those with piriformis syndrome, all I can say is for you to stay the course. Do whatever you can afford to do financially, and then do everything you can do at home for free/cheap. As soon as the pain remotely eases up, start walking -- even if it's just to the front door. The next day, do it again, then a little further, etc. Same with stretching. We have to keep our body moving, but don't do to much too soon - my second injury was from that (trying to work around the house) and that caused the major, acute incident! I'm now good enough that I'm starting very gentle yoga. I am never going to allow this to happen to my body again -- taking much better care of myself from now on, and I will listen when my body starts whispering that something is wrong. Act on the whisper and prevent the screaming. Lesson learned!

Best wishes to everyone struggling with pain!

I just came across this thread and it may be closed or too late. This is the closest thing I could find on the internet relating to my problem. About one month ago I was getting into the car and got a sharp spasm in my left flank that goes from my belly button and wraps around my abdomen to my spine. Soon my entire left leg down to my foot got numb and I developed foot drop. I was admitted for stroke - but MRI showed no evidence. Still waiting for a diagnosis. The spasm is still there and feels like I have a 10 pound water balloon attached to my side. Only hurts when pressed or when I walk too much (PT got me walking.) numbness did extend to the left side of my scrotum, but this seems to be improving. Now scheduled for a lumbar puncture. MRI shows lumbar stenosis, but where is it located should not produce my symptoms. Doc willing to do surgery, but I said no for now. Walking/leg numbness difficult, but its that numb slightly painful flank that bothers me. Any suggestions?

I also felt a chiropractor made my problem worse with a tens unit. I saw stars when he put it on my calf. Now I can't stand on my toes on that leg.
