This is just in response to the person who said a guy may be giving if to you, UTI's aren't contagious. You can't pass it on just because you have it. It's not a STD, it's bladder infection that people who never have sex can get.

Wow, I really appreciate all of these posts. I have had since 2004 (age 34 when it started) something that sounds so much like UTI but the doctors were not sure and this week I have almost been in tears with the urinating pain. Do any of you have the pain and discomfort after urinating? I have been on Doxycycl 100 mg since the begining of this, but I really have not drank a lot of water to often so I will try that, cranberry and vitimin C to prolong this, it seems like I receive it monthy and most of the time 1 week before my period.

Go to ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed to check out a new product for helping women that suffer from UTIs. The product is developed by a doctor, is a supplement-like powder you mix with water, contains the highest amount of PACs (ingredient in cranberry - better than AZO pills), has all natural ingredients and is low in calories (unlike cranberry juice). It is relatively inexpensive...their website has an awesome video that explains what happens to you with UTIs as well. I swear by this stuff!!!!

I found this page logical. D mannose helps and the indication of sodium bicarbonate made sense to me since cranberry - though effective in removing an environment for the bacteria to grow - causes pain because it's acidic.

im 18 years old and i had a viral infection in my throat called PHARYNGITIS i know this may sound like it has nothing to do with a uti but it does sooo i go to the hospital cuz i had an over the top temperature they checked out alll my symptoms and prescribe me an antibiotic and a steroid so i start taking them a couple days later i start to hurt when i pee so then i ignored it because it was only doing it every once in a while about 3 days after that i was constantly burning itching and had frequent urges to pee well cum to find out my antibiotic which was for my throat is what caused my uti (urinary tract infection) so its not always how you take care of your self its also what you intake on your body so ladies its not a dumb idea to ask your doctor if the next time he prescribes you and antibiotic if itll cause a yeast infection or urinary tract infection i mean its your body dont you want to know what itll do to your body alot of women dont care but if you do you will do what i said and just ask...

Just ran across your post from 2005... I hope that you have long since found a preventative for your UTIs. You have probably figured out by now that frequent to long-term antibiotic use is not good for you. There are hundreds of OTC cranberry supplements currently available. ALL of them are pixie dust... I recently found a product, ellura, that just came to the U.S. from France where supplements require a government approval based on the fact that they meet minimum requirements that they actually work. Believe me, it works GREAT! ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed

Cranberry juice is acidic, around PH 2.75. Orange juice is PH 2 and Lemon juice is PH 2. The low the # the more acid. ellura is a cranberry supplement that actually works and is an approved supplement throughout Europe with a PH of 4.4. Tomato juice is PH 4 and coffee is PH 5. By the way, no cranberry supplement currently sold in the U.S. today meets the approval standards in Europe. The data for D-mannose is week at best. Dr. Amy Howell, Rutgers UNV, recently published a study on it. Conclusion: It is unlikely that D-mannose would result in a clinically relevant reduction in recurrence of UTI, as has been found with cranberry ingestion. An abstract of the study can be found online at The FASEB Journal. 2008;22:702.32

Since you are experiencing recurrent UTIs I suggest you take ellura. It will put a stop to the UTIs unlike the low grade product that you find in the store. ellura is only available on the internet. It is will cost more than the over the counter products that you will find in stores but, it is worth it because it actually works.

As for the kidney stones... Go to Medline, Web MD or NIH and search for diets that will help you avoid developing the kidney stones. By the way, about 70% of all kidney stones contain calcium oxalate as the major component. It is composed of calcium and oxalic acid, substances in the urine that can crystallize inside the kidneys. Less commonly, kidney stones are made of calcium phosphate, uric acid, struvite, and cystine. Knowing the chemical makeup of the stone helps your doctor identify why you are prone to stone formation.

The kind of stone determines what dietary changes may be needed. Most notably, drinking enough water helps prevent all kinds of kidney stones. Some of the oxalate in urine is made by the body. But diet is one of several factors that can promote or inhibit stone formation. Other factors include heredity, environment, weight and fluid intake.

Eating certain foods with high levels of organic oxalate can increase the amount of oxalate in the urine, where it combines with calcium to form the stones. But only a few have been shown to cause a significant increase in urinary oxalate excretion. There are listed by the national Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases (NIDDK): High-oxalate foods: rhubarb, spinach, beets, swiss chard, wheat germ, soybean crackers, peanuts, okra, chocolate, black Indian tea, sweet potatoes. Medium-oxalate foods: grits, grapes, celery, green pepper, red raspberries, fruit cake, strawberries, marmalade, liver.

There is good evidence that cranberries are not high in oxalate and therefore should not be avoided as a high-oxalate-containing food for those prone to oxalate stones.

Ellura is made from clean pure juice most sugar and organic acids are removed in the manufacturing process without modifying the total polyphenol content and especially the PAC content. As a result, ellura is very low in oxalates, 7.5 times less oxalic acid than one 8 oz glass cranberry juice and 16.5 times less than one serving of 3.5 oz. of raw cranberries.

Give ellura a try. It will stop the UTIs.

Thanks alot. All of these responses have really helped out. But, is there an OTC antibiotic that can help, because i have been using Azo, and usually it helps with the pain, but this time, it doesn't even have an effect. So, i need to just get rid of the infection, but i don't have the money to go to the doctor and get a persciption.

Unfortunately there are no over-the-counter oral antibiotics…  They are all Rx.  Try calling your doctor’s office and asking them to call in an antibiotic prescription to treat your UTI.  Explain to them that you cannot afford to pay an office visit this time.  Also ask them to call in a Rx for a generic so that it will be very low cost.  Some are free and others as low as $4.00.  You are correct, you must have the antibiotic to cure an active infection.  ellura will aid in curing the active infection as it will prevent the new and unattached bacteria from infecting you.  ellura will also prevent the UTI from happening again.  Just think, no more repeats!!!

The active ingredient in AZ0 that helps with your pain is Phenazopyridine Hydrochloride.  It is a mild pain killer that works in the urinary tract.  It does not cure or prevent UTIs. As the infection gets worse the AZ0 will become less effective…

You can get a UTI from your sex partner, but it's not because he has a UTI. UTI's are commonly caused by e coli. I found this on www.umm.edu:
"Escherichia (E.) coli is responsible for most uncomplicated cystitis cases in women, especially in younger women. E. coli is generally a harmless microorganism originating in the intestines. If it spreads to the vaginal opening, it may invade and colonize the bladder, causing an infection. The spread of E. coli to the vaginal opening most commonly occurs when women or girls wipe themselves from back to front after urinating, or after sexual activity."
So your men aren't necessarily cheating on you! It just means that he may have "E. Coli" in or around his penis that transfers into you, or it may be in your feces.
These are very painful. I have blood in my urine right now from a UTI. It's something that sometimes we just can't seem to get rid of! My doctor told me to use feminine wipes after every time that I "go number two" and to have my husband and I to wipe ourselves off before and after sex. Of course, LOADS of water...
