I just returned from the ortho after having worn a knee brace to ease the pain of the medial left knee deterioration due to osteoarthritis. I am 68 years old, 6 feet 4 inches tall, 260 lb. (overweight) and I played football, tennis rode a road bike all my life and obviously deteriorated the knee somewhat. I am scheduled for a Oxford Partial Knee Replacement in September and despite the risks, such as, skin infection, blood infection, pulminary embolism, full knee replacement possibility, amputation etc. etc. I am still optimistic that I will be able to enjoy life including golf, and perhaps some tennis.
Yes there are risks but to be woken up during the night from pain, to be unable to walk even 9 holes on the golf course. I am quite prepared and looking forward optimistically to having a partial knee replacement.
SO after only 2 years with my Oxford partial knee, I have to have a total replacement. The doctor (one I fully trust) found a lot of arthritis last year on the lateral side during my scope for scar tissue. It has progressed to the point that I am in constant pain. I just need to let him know when I feel like am ready for it. :-)
I am 4 mo post surgery w/ Oxford partial (left-medial). Surgery and rehab went well. 3 nights ih hosp (should have been 1, but pain meds did not agree w/ my stomach). Went home, had 5 in-home PT sessions, then did some at an out-patient facility. Intermittent swelling, but manageable. Used "ice-man" and "game ready" machine with success. I may have pushed too hard during rehab (I recommend against doing that). Some backsliding. Main problem now is appearance of Bakers cysts (2). Aspiration gives great relief, but it fills again. Leakage (of synovial fluid) into lower calf is a REAL BUMMER -- seems like there is nothing much to do about it but treat the symptoms. Pain and discomfort can be intense!. Knee joint itself seems okay (steady, solid). When not dealing with cyst sequallae, I can bike, swim. Feels better than before op -- and I expect it will gt even better. BUT, why are these cysts developing??? Is something wrong R/O bad implant, allergic reaction (cement used). Why is so much excessive synovial fluid being generated?? These are my issues. Still working with my surgeon, and most recently a physiatrist. I WILL beat this complication !!!
I had this surgery a year ago and to this day, I am not happy. Anyone who says this is the way to go is not TELLING THE TRUTH. I have had pain and crazy feeling all along and do not trust my knee at all. Being 60 is not the end of the world and when you have a surgery that is suppose to fix something, then it should be good and trust worthy. I still limp and I did not have this much problems with the knee before.I have an appointment with the doctor and I am going to give him a ear full and I need something done about this.
Me too.... Bilateral Oxford knees @ 51 yrs.... fabulous.... recommended

Good Luck. I have a partial for 3 years and it's worse! Apparently it's wonderful for some people and terrible for some. I"m contemplating a full knee replacement also. I will need to revise my partial also and a full replacement on the other.
I too had this surgery in january, something is not right.I read what others have said, and this is what I have to say.I have had some kind of pain and discomfort not as bad as before, but it is still there.Mostly when I laid down in the begining.Like the others on this subject have said.My knee is still swollen with some kind of hump on the top. When I bend my knee I can feel what seems to be BB like objects moving around there. The knee crunches just like my other knee(but that one is also bad). You can feel it with your hand or even hear it,really.Sometimes it feels like it's going to lock up or give out. When lying down just moving my leg a certain way can give me a scare. The back of my knee sort of feels stif.Stairs are still a problem.Holding weight adds to it and walking up.Besides still being swollen with a hump,it also looks square not an oval shape like normal. It's been four and a half months.I have insurance but still have spent most of what I had saved for other things. Not working so nothing's coming in.I have my doctors release to go back to work. When my union hall calls me I have to go to work with a funky knee it looks like. Can you take this to court?
I am 42 years old ,, my surgeon telling me I might not need a full knee replacement I may just need the Oxford knee partial replacement.r u saying don't do this?
It's up to you. You've read what others have said.I really didn't read that much about it before having my surgery.Would I have the surgery if I did?My PC doctor referred me to the specialist. He's suppoosed to be the best, top dog in his field, head of the surgeons who do this kind of surgery. The sign on the door to his office said so.Monday I return to work. Some of the work that Ido is constuction. Some of it is dangerous and demanding that you are physically able to do your job.Do I think that I'm up to it.I don't know.I'm just going to do it..Like the doctor said.It will take time and will get better.I Just hope nothing will happen to me to not have that time. Will get back to this site sooner or later.Ihope it's later. What else can you do.Take care.ALOHA
I had Oxford part knee replacement on the 16th December 2011, today 21st June 2012. The scar has not heal yet ,have been told it is stitches coming out of the scar. I can walk quite well, but my knee is still swollen by 2inches I cut a piece of string the size of my knee before the op, and this still is approx 2inches to small. My knee swells even more on days I go to work. I sometimes fell pain in the replacement part, the left side of the knee which was not replaced in numb. And my knee cap which was not replaced feels like there is pressure there ,and could explode at any time. I am due to see my surgeon again on the 2nd august ,but don't hold out much hope.
I sometimes say to my family if I still had my crutches I would use to give my knee a rest some day. I had 5 months of physio, and still do all the exercises 3 times a day
Just want to let you know my experience........ I had an Oxyford knee replacement done in Feb. and went back to work 5 weeks later (in construction) but taking it easy for the first two weeks. After two months I was totally back to my normal life with full motion in the knee and no pain at all. I ride my bike, swim, hike and even run short distances. So far it's GREAT.

Glad to here all is well with your op, I am now thinking that there is something really wrong with mind. Or maybe I did something wrong . But have done right from day one what I have been told to do by the hospital.
