I am so glad I checked-up on this....like many of you I too thought I was the only one! I am 63 but still a kid at heart & as far as I can remember have had these 'kidney type' pains virtually all my life in situations where the adrenalin rush is high! E.G. near car accidents, close to or after a fight/argument etc....just like so many of you. I love fast cars & have my own built Ford Escort Van Mk3 with an 1800 fully turbo charged lump & 310 bhp at the wheels. Whenever I race somebody I always get the adrenalin/kidney pains afterwards....sometimes so bad that I have to stop & get my foot of the clutch as my leg is shaking so much I cannot drive for a few minutes! Same happens in my Volvo V70R [chipped] but at least she's an automatic!!

I'd love to find out more about this sympton & if I do get any further info I will surely post-it herewith. Cheers, John.

I was surprised that there are so many more people having the same condition, and yet doctors dont seem to have an answer.

I went to my family GP doctor, and frankly I dont think they have a clue.  But yet if I may weight in here a bit.

A friend referred and I went to see a (self-taught, meaning he doesnt have a degree in it) chinese chiropactor in Hong Kong.  (BTW, I am a HK Chinese).  He offered an explanation that sound sort of plausible to me.  He said, all people, with ages, have accumulated weakness, twisted or misalignment of our joints.  The body cope with a weakness in the joint by building muscle around it.  If the area does not have muscle, it would develop some soft tissue around it.  For specifically my case.  Long hours of sitting at the desks, bad beddings, and perhaps overstraining the back with that one time or twice for lifting a box that was too heavy have hurt that joints.  And he spot a patch of soft tissue on that particular area (i.e. lower back).  His remedy is to do a pretty intensive and (painful) massage on that and surrounding area after have that patch of my back exposed to a heating lamp for like 15 mins.  As a proof to me that so called soft patch is not normal skin tissue, he told me that patch of skin has remained cold to touch even after that 15 min direct exposure to that heating lamp, which I was surprised.

That treatment sort of helped as I suffered much less episode after that. But as in this kind of condition being linked to adrenaline rush, I can not be sure whether he has actually helped me or not.

Partly because he is not a proper trained professional, partly being that he lives quite far away, and for the most part, I dont understand really what is going on.

So would really like to be in circulation for this case, and if there are any professional out there that can offer a comment or something.

I know it's nothing to do with driving or sitting in a car/chair, I also know its not related to caffeine. I was standing all 5 times it happened to me, and I don't drink tea, coffee or energy drinks. First time it happened to me was shortly after the birth of my 6th child 2 years ago, so I thought there was something internally damaged which was causing the pain. Each time it has happened to me I have been in a heated argument. I don't know why this happens but I'm glad to find out its not just me it happens to. I have never met anyone who suffers with this in real life and never really mentioned it until now. I don't get the pain at the top of my back or shoulders, it's all my lower back. It's excruciating, the throbbing, pulsing all sounds too familiar, but I find it had to control my breathing during an episode, I tend to breath opposite of being winded...it makes me arch my back and hold my breath. Should add at point of argument it's not a feeling of fear...it's more like a - I'm going to kill you- feeling. And it's not actually during the arguments, it's within a minute or two after argument.

I am 24 years old and its crazy because I thought I was alone, a year ago I got pulled over by the police and I got so nervous, my adrenaline started pumping and I started getting shocking pain in my lower middle back and it was scared the sh*t out of me. It happened a few more times after that and I realized that it was happening every time I got scared or had a nervous reaction, I really want to know what is going on because for 1 this should not happen and for 2 its dangerous because it might stop me from being able to react in a bad situation.. if anyone has answers plz I need to get to the bottom.of this problem

I am 45 years old male. Had no chronic medical issue except for a moderate blood pressure level around 130psi and had a few incident of heart burn attacks.

Been taking quite a bit of green tea recently.

First experience 2 night ago after a heated argument.

Immediately after the hype up argument, first I felt my heart throbbing very hard. Next, my lower back near both kidney area starting palsating as if my kidney is swelling along with each heart beat.

I thought I was getting a stroke and I sort of have to calm myself down by trying to relax. The symtom was gone in a minute or two.

I try to google for a name for this symtom until I come across this thread. I can't believe til now no medical doctor has said anything about this symtom.

Hopefully, someone can help all of us here.

Somehow this thread has turned from people having "Adrenaline rushed" centered in the lumbar region, to weird sexual back pain, and unrelated back spasms? So, returning to the original post, the adrenaline rush lower back intense 1-3 minute pain is caused simply by EXTREME fear, or anxiety. i.e about to have a physical altercation with an extremely large person. There is NO medication for this condition as it is part of our human evolution "fight or flight" makeup. Some people are naturally predisposed to this condition due to their personalities or nature. The only way to overcome this condition is to conquer fear it self!

This happens to me when I fought with my ex husband and now it happens when i get into small arguments with my boy friend... they both think it's a sympathy ploy sighhhhh the pain is in my lower spine and  every heart beat my extreme lower back ust immobilizes me as i try and breath through the throbs. It's also happened to me while driving when i skidded on ice almost though a stop light at a busy intersection. I'm not looking for sympathy i'm truly in great pain when I argue with anyone. It's a great deterrent to never getting into conflict but it makes me too passive as well. grrr  I seen that some of you have it in the kidneys, lungs, and neck but mine is pretty much located in the lower spine and only goes up halfway. so it's like a bunch of bombs blowing up each heart beat in a generalized area. it's extremely debilitating. Someone has got to know what the heck this is and how to fix it.

I have asked my doctor about this several times and he has no idea what it could be and he hasn't ever heard of it. Yet, here are so many people with the exact same symptoms!
I too get the same excruciating pain several seconds after a situation of stress. Sometimes it might be another driver cutting me off while I'm driving. But it also happened once when another driver challenged me to a drag race, which I accepted willingly. After the 30 seconds or so of high speed driving, and we have gone back to normal driving, suddenly the pain kicks in. I've also had it happen when getting into a heated discussion/argument.
I am also a relatively healthy 43 year old male, and I've been having these pains for probably 10 years. I've started to accept that it is just a normal reaction to stress.
I feel like printing all these posts and taking them to my doctor on my next visit.

I think that could be a good guess, I am pre-diabetic and I've had this spinal/adrenalin problem for going on 20 years. It's like an electric shock through my spine any time I am overly angry or scared...road rage is the worst for people like us! But this is my first e-search of the problem and look there's tons of people with it! So wtf can't health providers recognize it and do something about it, they make us feel mental when we describe it and they can't find it. I had to quit a job on the railroad because too many dangerous situations and every time the electric shock would follow immediately. Of course you can't get a disability for something they can't find and treat...it's a problem for a lot of people now I can see

Hi, I am glad you posted this too! I just responded to someone on here that I've had the problem 20 years and had to quit the railroad because too many dangerous situations followed by electric shocks through my spine. A lot of people here have it in the spine and some in the kidneys looks like. It's debilitating for sure, and doctors can't find it and treat it so there is no disability for it. I am pre-diabetic, and so is the guy I responded to, are you diabetic at all?

Unfortunately I think you may be right. But having experienced it myself, I know every body in extreme fear doesn't experience what I do, which tells me my body is over-producing adrenaline at these times. So there must be a way to harness it and make your body produce less of it in general, but doctors don't even seem to know what the hell we're talking about much less fix it!?

What a relief to read all your stories and find out I am not the only one who suffers from this. I am a 58 year old female in generally good health. The first time it happened to me was about 5 years ago whilst driving on a motorway. I have always been nervous of driving at speed. A dreadful pain in my lower back came on suddenly and I thought I was going to faint.  It has happened on 3 more occasions since and it feels like someone is sticking a knife into both sides of my lower back. Thankfully the crippling pain only lasts for a minute or two. After the second episode I stopped driving on motorways but it has happened twice since then whilst being driven by somebody else at speed. I think my almost phobia of motorways causes these adrenalin rushes. On the most recent occasion we had to pull over so I could get out and double over on the ground until the pain subsided. I have had 2 lumbar punctures (one 15 years ago and the other 1 year ago ) but I don't know if this has anything to do with it. I try to distract myself on journeys by reading or using my ipod to prevent it happening but it is easier said than done.

Thats funny because i also feel that this symptom has only begun happening to me after my first epidural as well. Unlike the people commenting here, i don't experience the pain after a stressful situation, it comes on whenever it pleases and i will always go onto develop a 'headache' that gives any migraine i have ever suffered a run for its money in severity. You'd think Drs would react with a high level of concern, testing for meningitis etc as they did here, but like alot of others here, they don't seem to take severe debilitating spinal pain very seriously, writing it of to 'tension headache'. Doesn't do much to assure me i might say! Good luck to all, i hope we all find the answers, that lead to pain relief and treatment, that we are all looking for!
