I experience this a lot when adrenaline kicks in. Heated arguments, angry traffic situations etc, cause this extreme throbbing pain in my lower back. If I wasn't sitting on my butt, the pain would surely bring me to my knees. It's bad.

But since no doctor has an answer, I have a theory as to the cause.

My theory is poor posture/specific weak muscles. Specifically in our hip flexors and lower back. The misalignment in our spine affects the internal functionality of our body. So, in extreme moments of stress..the body can't work properly to deal with it, and we feel the pain in the lower back. Possibly weak ab muscles? SHortened hip flexors, etc.

That's just my theory. I'm currently doing daily corrective stretches and exercises to improve posture and muscle imbalances and will update everyone if it helps any.

Jake here again, and just to add some medical history about myself: I'm 23 years old. Perfect weight. No medical conditions that i'm aware of. I have noticed postural issues though, which has led me to create the theory above.

I have the same issue. 32 years old, In decent shape, but I have noticed this throbbing, almost incapacitating pain when my adrenaline spikes during confrontations ( live in a high crime area). I will bring tjis up with my chiropractor ( more like witch doctor) as he always gets me fixed up naturally through adjustments, whole foods and exercise. I always forget to mention it to him, but it just happened again, which is when I stumbled upon this post. I will make it a point to comment with any success I may have.

I'm a 27 year old male. I have been experiencing this same pain for several years now. The first time was both an adrenal and arousal sort of situation, in which this girl I worked with got frisky in the backroom. Almost took me to the floor (the pain, not the girl.) Today while driving my wife and daughter home from the park some drunk guy started harassing us. When we got to a stop light he layed on his horn so when I got out to see what his problem was he tried to hit me thru his door window, after beating the guy into the passenger seat I noticed the same exact dibilitating pain in my lower back..

I found this page after an experience last night that left me in shock of how bad the pain was. I sometimes have very intense night terrors in which I wake up out of a sound sleep sure that something horrible or stressful is happening. I am in a state of extreme stress until I realize where I am and that nothing bad is really happening. Until I figure this out though, I am in a state of very bad stress, almost panic. I've also had a panic attack in the middle of the night in one of these episodes.

Anyway, last night was one of the worst pains I've ever felt in the area of my right kidney. I woke up with a night terror in a state of almost-panic as a surge of adrenaline poured through my body. Right after that I got out of bed, and that's when it hit me...intense, shooting pain that doubled me over in  seconds. I thought for sure that I was going to have to call an ambulance! It was so bad! I thought for sure that either my kidney was having an intense infection all at once or that my appendix had ruptured. I've never felt anything like it! I was very scared for a few moments wondering what was going to happen to me. I breathed through the pain, barely moving a muscle, and it finally subsided after a few minutes. I made my way back to bed just relieved that the pain had gone away without having to call an ambulance.

I've been diagnosed by a naturopathic doctor with adrenal exhaustion in the past based on some daytime fatigue, weight gain (especially around my stomach area), and some other symptoms. I'm a 32 year old female, and I started having the weight gain and other symptoms back when I was about 25 or 26. However, I have not been good about my diet or taking supplements to support my adrenals. This has been because of a combination of lack of money, lack of good health insurance, and upheavals in my life, relationships, and job situation. However, I really want to have someone with knowledge in the area of adrenal fatigue take a look at my adrenal function to see what's going on with my body.

Also, I took SSRIs for about 7 years (Paxil and Zoloft), which I believe created or added to the adrenal problem. Although I have been off them since 2010, I'm still having symptoms of adrenal fatigue. This intense experience last night has especially made me want to have this addressed. The problem of course is that most doctors won't admit that this problem even exists from what I understand, and most insurance will not cover treatment for adrenal fatigue.

Same symptom here... first time was probably 13-14 years ago. I became angry with someone, and after informing them of my thoughts, I went into my house and collapsed on the floor due to the pain (It's very similar to the pain you feel due to kidney stones.) It has happened several times since then, and seems to be getting worse, i.e. lesser events cause pain (though not debilitating like the first episode.) Now I can't give a presentation to a room full of people without it occuring.

I am over 40 years old, long time smoker, coffee and alcohol drinker. I've been on Paxil for around 14 years... I've tried to quit, but I become overly hyper and aggressive. I'd be interested in knowing how many others are on Paxil or similar drugs.

Thank goodness I read this email! I thought I was going mad myself! I to have had this problem for over 24years and recently had such a severe attack it made me fee ill for days after. What you have described is exactly what happens to me but travels up to the top of my head and totally debilitates me so I either collapse or am so weak I can't stand or walk for a while because I am so weak. Please can you get in touch with me as two cases add more weight than one and will be taken more seriously. Have you heard from any one else?

This is amazing: I've been having this problem, off and on, since the 80s. This week, however, there has been an ominous development. I'm suddenly having the pain without the throbbing and, instead of it lasting for only a minute or so, it's been constant for two days. And this time it was not triggered by any adrenalin rush that comes to mind; I just woke up yesterday morning and there it was. (It felt maddeningly familiar, but it took me over a day before it finally hit me when I'd felt it before.) Both now and with my previous one-minute long attacks, I do not have the pain as bad as some of you; it is not crippling or agonizing; but it definitely matches the description posted by most of you to a T. And yes, up until this week, it has ALWAYS been triggered by an adrenalin rush, usually if I find myself in a position of unaccustomed power, e.g. public speaking, which I normally love. As I say, the big differences this time is that it's not throbbing, just the same ache except it's prolonged and won't go away, and I don't recall any episode of the type that normally triggers it. (I had a VERY STRESSFUL examination by a cardiologist the day before evaluating an unexpected bout of irregular heartbeat I had two weeks ago, which I've NEVER had before, so I'm thinking it might have been a delayed reaction to that.)

To tell you the truth, I haven't had sex in years (other than very gentle masturbation) and the reason is that I'm terrified of having one of these attacks, whatever they are. If anyone here, who suffers from this condition, can confirm that it does or does not happen during sex, I'd be very grateful!

Well, I've now had time to read through this entire thread, and I guess some indeed have experienced it during and/or after sex. Drat; that's what I was afraid of.
