I go through the same thing! But it's not limited to when I go to sleep. Just holding my hand up causes it to go numb. I told my doctor on different occasions, and all he did was feel my risk and told me I don't have poor blood circulation and take some vitamins. The numbness started in one hand years ago and has progressed to both hands, arms, feet and legs, sometimes painful. Sometimes it takes awhile for the feeling to come back in my hands. When I'm asleep, they go numb and it awakens me. Then, I'll have to hold my hands on the side of my bed for the feeling to come back and go back to sleep that way. Does anyone care enough to help us?

I have this too. That's why I am here... I was searching for some answers!
I am going to a chiropractor and he said my vertebra in my neck are compressed and that is what is leading to the pain going down my neck to my shoulder to my elbow and then causes my little finger and my ring finger to be numb. Well, now that numb is paired with another pain. On the top of my hand (left) from the the same said area to my wrist it feels like the worst burning ever! If I move it just right or if I bump it I am almost dropped to my knees it hurts so bad.
The chiro is using a tools that resembles a metal pencil to snap it. Now that hurts big time but if he thinks it helps, I will suffer through it!
I use my hands a lot. I am a hairdresser for 30 years and I also am on the computer a lot. I know it is not carpal tunnel. It's different pain then that. I once had that years ago on my right hand. A chiro fixed me up then too.
Help!

I have been suffering lately with terrible numbing tingling and burning pain in both my hands when I sleep. I have arthritis in my neck, hip, lower back and in my feet. I have had a fusion done last Jan on my right big toe due to no cartilage left. I had surgery on my left foot twice (for broken arch and to take some arthritis out but not fusion a few yrs back) Now I need hip arthroscopic surgery in Jan and found out last week from the orthopedic Dr that there is also arthritis in my neck C6,C7.
I swim distance which I have done weekly since May (always swam) and I work out at the gym. I am female 52 yrs old. My hip is killing me but at least I know what is wrong. But now I can't sleep worth anything because of this hand thing. I was told by my primary Dr to wear a brace. it isn't carpal tunnel I know it isn't. And when I swim it's my right hand that goes numb after about 35 pool lengths. it is driving me nuts as I can't sleep. seems that my arms can't get comfortable. My orthopedic Dr told me last week to do neck traction but I can't do the regular device as I've got TMJ which I've had since high school but this year I started to wear the mouth device at night since I clench my jaw. my left jaw has totally worn down I found out and my right jaw is over compensating. So I am waiting to see if I can rent a traction device that is costlier that puts no pressure on the jaw, just the neck. I don't know what I have but arthritis is really causing alot of pain. I've had a terrible stressful yr which hasn't helped. no job, my father passed away, my teen daughter was in a car accident and hit her head on steering wheel so she is in treatments that haven't stopped since last March.

I too experience everything everyone here has stated. It started back in 2001, and to date, my Doctor, who trust me, is smart when it comes to anything we go to him for, even things that get miss-diagnosed at the hospital, it perplexed by my symptoms. He says I have RA, Lupus, maybe MS, and Fibromyalgia. I am down to taking 3 presciptions, Vicodine, Lyrica (or Neurontin when I can't afford Lyrica), and Restoril. I just started the Restoril, but it really helps with the night-time pain for some reason, it just really relaxes you. The pain has progressively gotten worse over the years. It is now all the way up my arms into my neck area, its in my legs, and also in my lower back. I have no energy to do anything, everything is a chore. I have to psych myself up just to go check the mail. Sleeping and getting up in the morning are the worst for me. I can't sleep much due to the pain, so I find myself just laying there and adjusting all night long so the pain stays away, sometimes it is just easier to sleep sitting up. Sometimes I try to use the laptop in bed, but that too brings on the burning pain. When I get up in the morning, I feel like one of the exaggerated elderly people you see in the movies, I can barely get out of bed with out my feet feeling like I am walking of fire and glass, and trying to straighten up my posture and get around is ridiculous. I am just so thankful that it's not in my head and that others experience the same thing, not that I want anyone else to feel the pain I feel. Today, I am going to go to the emergency room and see if I can request an MRI... I figure at some point they have to find something. They know I am in pain, even on pain meds, my blood-pressure is through the roof. I know my posting is long, but it's more venting and getting off my chest than anything else.

I am currently going to school for massage therapy and one of the things we learn about is TOS or Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. This happens when the Brachial Plexus is pinch either by the scalene muscles in the neck or the pec muscles. Your chiropractor should be able to do some simple tests to find out the source of the problem. It could be something else i dont know cuz im not a doctor but thats my take on it. The numbness and tingling in the arm and pinky and ring finger are some of the symptoms though. Also if its in the whole hand it could be related to carpal tunnel syndrome.

has anyone looked into B-12 deficiency? I used to suffer from an eating disorder and had this - badly. I could never sleep. I was ok during the day -but at night the tingling would keep me up all night. Mine was almost a tingling/itching feeling. Very bizarre. Anyway, once I got treatment and realized how low I was on B-12, it went away and hasn't come back since.

! Hi everyone. I have crohn's disease and for the past few years I have had these leg, feet, face, hands and arm symptoms too. I was first told it was a B12 deficiency, which I have had for years. Also, I had been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. For the past two years, I have had a potassium and magnesium crisis that is ongoing. It requires hospitalization for IV potassium which sometimes dips so low my heart might stop. I have noticed that the neuropathy pains and numbness have increased greatly since this new potassium problem has come to light. I have had half my intestines removed due to crohn's disease and that is why I do not absorb nutrients essectial to living well. Plus, the crohn's becomes active from time to time and requires steroid or other strong treatments. I did notice improvement in the pain and numbness when on the steroids lately but do not want to use them much. So, I hope this info may add something for someone to bring up with their doctor. I want to see a neurologist this year and maybe see what tests can be done to pinpoint is something else is wrong. I wonder if i might have an artery blockage somewhere.

I can shed some light on this. Numbness in hands and feet along with sharp and burning sensations can be caused by nerves being pinched (especially the Sciatic nerve). I suggest you visit a Chiropractor. Numbness in the extremities can also be caused by high blood pressure. Exercising until you break a sweat is the best way to control your blood pressure; do not over-extend yourself but do get your heart pumping.

Since July of 2008 I have had numbness and tingling and weakness in my feet which then traveled to my legs and hips. It has been 7 months now and 5 MRI's later. Still no answer to what is going on. They believe it may be MS but are unsure. Lately I have felt it in my hands also. But not as much as in my legs. Does anyone know what the heck this is? I was told I may have to go see an Arthritis doctor. How does Arthritis cause numbness and tingling etc. I thought it causes Joint pain etc.

So discouraging to read all the undiagnosed. I too have had pain and numbness in my hands and feet for about 2 years. Yes, diagnosed w/carpal tunnel, but my feet? And carpal tunnel is not supposed to hurt on the outer edges/pinky... Also am hypothyroid... Sense it may be related. Getting XRays for arthritis, but fibromyalgia seems like the most likely. Spent many years with (still) undiagnosed back pain, and am not looking forward to more no answers.

I do not have a single diagnosis but several. Degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, osteo arthritis . So some research yourselves and ask ask questions that is the only way you will find anything out. Doctors are way over booked and do not have the time to actually help a person when it is something unusual. (other than a cold, flu, etc.) Even seeing a neurologist didn't help. Told me I needed surgery so I had bak cage fusions surgery in 2005 and I am now in worse shape than before. Wear those arm braces for carpel tunnel at night when you sleep you can buy them at a store wal mart, k-mart, walgreens, rite aid, meijers.... like $12.00 each way cheaper than from the doctor mine were $158.00 from Dr. They may or may not help. Doctors, remember it is a busiuness and they are in it to make money. So look out for yourself. Look into Radiculopathy c8, Distal Symmetrical Polyneuropathy, Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinafing Polyneuropathy, or some form of Neuropathy (crainal/Spinal accessory nerve) it could be a number of things depending on your symptoms so do your homework. I'm on meds that help with the pain but cause other problems of their own and still do not know what is wrong or how to get better and it is destroying my life. But I'm still willing to fight with all I've got for it so I will keep searching and asking questions of all doctors. Maybe we should get together and go on the Doctors TV show. There is a devise called a Fenzion not sure about the spelling but only Doc's and Chriopractors in CA one in Sacramento area and FL Miami and other costal areas are using it so far it looks real promising.

I have also been experiencing these sensations for several years now. About 7 years ago I went to a neurologist who did a nerve conduction study because it was thought that I had carpul tunnel syndrome. That test came back negative, so it was ruled that I just had tendonitis. I would wear wrist splints to help with the pain. About 3 years ago I went back to the Dr. as these symptoms were becoming worse and I was also experiencing severe swelling in my hands. My family dr sent me to a rheumatologist who has diagnosed my problem as lupus (because of these symptoms along with others). Problems with aching, numbness, and tingling in these extremeties could also be a form of arthritis. Ask your dr to check for these things. Maybe you will get some answers and find some relief. God bless.
