I had pain in my left flank area under ribs, got fevers, sharp shooting stabbing pain through left rib area, sometimes it would bring me down fast and hard. Anyway, in addition, i had night sweats, i just looked really sick. Come to my surprise, i had a tumor in my left kidney, and it was stage 1 cancer, semi-fast growing cancer. I am 41 years old and was thinking it may have been pre-menopausal symptoms. Anyway, if its a persistent pain and only subsides for short periods, don't brush off as gas, unless of course, you farting up a storm, then its probably gas moving. I know all too well about some bad gas, it sucks! And, i have had a appendectomy when i was 11, i first signs of appendicitis is nausea and throwing everything you eat up, you feel very ill, like a flu along with major sharp pain in your lower right pelvic area. The append. is located on right lower abdomen between the waistline and leg crease. Hope this helps someone. Gas usually moves and then eventually finds it way out through belching or farting. I also had my gallbladder removed, I had 5 huge gallstones, which can cause major gas and diarrhea, if you eat Eggs, any types of fattening foods and your in the bathroom or have extreme pain upper abdomen, right below the breast line at bottom of breast bone and its hard to breath, get to the hospital. The gallstones can kill, if not taken care of in time.....
Hi, I'm not sure if I have what every other person has but I experience SUDDEN PAIN on my left side, 3rd or 4th rib up. My doc said it could be from a NERVE getting caught between my ribs.
I got it after playing netball...would wake up in the night or early morning and think I was having a heart attack. It would last for 3 mins. or so. I couldn't even get up to get a phone 'cos I thought I would die if I made a wrong move. It would go away as quickly as it came.
When I did nightfill at a supermarket - where I exercised the shoulder muscles (the nerve runs right around), I didn't get it so much. When I quit, or did less days, it would happen. Also, if I sleep on my left side and stretch the shoulder I feel like I may get an attack.
So, for me, I need to exercise the shoulders and back to strengthen muscles. Hope this helps others! :-)

lower ribcage, left side, hurts all the time, especially when sitting up or walking, any activity Does any one have idea?
I too have had this issue under my left rib, not a pain but an uncomfortable pressure. Worse when you eat, and based usually on posture(when sitting at a 90 degree angle in chair or car) seems worse. Ive done tons of online reading in forums and seen endless people with the same symptoms.
The other day i came upon a study of the digestive tract that said that one cause of this pressure is what is considered a working constipation. Basicly the system can get gummed up by poor diet and lack of hydration. You dont think ur constipated due to the normal timing on excretions. But this is common misconception according to the article. They said it was possible for excretion to get passed the stuff stuck on the walls and thus leaving stuff in the system. I started eating more apples and drinking more (alot more) water and its been 2 days now and its already feeling better. Still there a little bit but no where as bad as what it was. The thing they said is that without proper hydration it could affect the muscle contractions and the hydration needed in the stool to move. So poor diet and lack of hydration can cause dry sticky non moving stool thus the full feeling and pressure under the ribs(or so im believing so far) due to location of the intestinal track.
Try it i hope it helps atleast one person. That feeling sucks!

My father experienced this same kind of pain. He went to his Cardiologist, Pulmanary Specialist, and a few other specialist to have tons of test run. Since my father is a heart patient, we became extremely concerned with the burning crushing feeling he was having. His Pulmanary Dr is the one that discovered he has an enlarged heart and sent him back to his Cardiologist, who was mid-testing him. She in turn decided to do an Auteriogram (sp ck), which made us all nervous, since the last one my father had, resulted in 5 bypass surgery. When she got into the procedure she discovered that the bypass the did on my father's heart had collapsed and his heart was overworked and enlarged. She stinted the bypass, and Dad is feeling completely better. I was amazed that he hadn't died. Thank God in heaven! But they said they caught it in time and that his heart was strong and the swelling would go down. Now he is thankful he went ahead and had the auteriogram done this time because not only did it save his life, but he is no longer suffering from that crushing, breathless, burning that was in his chest.
Hello,
I have had this weird, not intense pain under my left rib area and I was laying in bed on night touching that area and felt a small lump. It is weird cause it is not directly on my rib but if I move my insides up and down I can feel it on my rib area but it is not directly located on my rib. When I stand up I can feel it if I press in and move my insides and it then feels likes its under my rib cage. I sometimes have a mild pain under my left breast too.
I know I started to work out and I stopped thinking it was related to that. Its been about 4-5 weeks now and the lump is still there, the slight pain especially when I am sitting and leaning on one side, and a mild pain at times under my left breast. When I felt the lump I immediately felt alarmed. I do smoke but trying to stop.
I just don't like the lump I feel, the pain in that area and the pain under my left breast that comes and goes. I am scheduling an appointment next week.
Can anyone help me out?

I have the same pain and itching that you described. I am being tested now for several things. Have you found out anything about your symptoms?
I have this same pain and my doctor has been unable to determine what it is. It honestly feels like some type of inflammation is causing it for me. I'm a 24 yr old female. I wonder if this is a more prevalent condition to women or men?
Also look into Lactose intolerence. My husband suffered for 10 years until he went to an Acupuncurest who told him he was lactose intolerent. What a difference cutting out milk and cheese did for him. Thank God!
Pain under the left rib cage bounced me out of bed and a restful sleep tonight. When the pain started, I could feel my heart beating abnormally.. And my Blood Pressure was elevated to 165/111 (I've never had a BP problem) I've had a couple of similar episodes in the past and was told it's probably panic attacks but I'm doubting that diagnosis. I have felt nauseated today and some weakness.
Right now, the pain is a dull ache. I'm trying to decide if I should go to my local Hospital ER because of the BP and adnormal heart rate. I can tolerate the pain. Anybody else have BP spike and extremely adnormal heart beat with this?
I am experiencing the same symptom which mostly start in the afternoons, especially when i m sited but only last for few minustes, then the pain is all gone almst everday, sometimes i have to do setups or ran fast jst for few seconds to cure the pain.I urgently need your reply on how i can seek medical help or what i sholud do to help.
I TOO HAVE SIMILLAR SYMPTOMS HAVE YOU FOUND A SOLUTION TO THIS?
many thanks to you sir
I also have itching needles (or ice picks) that hurt mildly to moderately under my left lower rib. In addition, there is a dull pain the size of a child's fist there. The ice pick hurts on a scale of 4-6, or it just itches. I have never had pain in this area before. It is deep below the lower left side of my ribs. I am SO TIRED of people talking about the skin. It is INSIDE deep. All of my blood tests came back normal. I am waiting now for an abdominal ultrasound.
What was the cause? I have been having this same issue for about 2 1/2 weeks. Went in for my ultrasound today and she said everything looks normal but of course I have to wait for my doctor to call me.
