Acute pancreatitis Most cases of acute pancreatitis come on pretty quickly. The pancreas becomes inflamed but it only stays that way for a few days and there isn’t usually any permanent damage. Chronic pancreatitis is where the pancreas becomes inflamed and stays that way, causing it to stop working properly.

Are you able to tell me what has happened? I just got married 1.5 years ago and love my husband. But he became an alcoholic 2 years ago and drinks about 1-2 liters of vodka every day and smokes 2-3 packs of cigarettes each day. He is in the hospital about every 2-3 months for 4-5 days at a time for a year now with acute pancreatitis. And the months he's not in the hospital, he has pancreatic episodes at home where he just won't eat or drink anything for 2-3 days until his pancreas feels better, then goes back to drinking. Yesterday I found him in the guest room where he had vomited up blood everywhere from a horrific pancreatic attack. The doctors continue to tell him he's dying and that the next time could be his last. It still doesn't make him stop drinking. He says it must be something he ate, or it was the pizza he had, or it's his medications he's taking. Everyone has flat out told him it's the alcohol. But he refuses to say he's an alcoholic, refuses to stop drinking, and refuses to admit he's an alcoholic. Meanwhile, I am sitting here slowly watching this man I just married, slowly commit suicide before my eyes, and I can't stop it. My heart is breaking. I love him and I hate him for doing this to me all at the same time. He's had a ruptured appendix and was in the hospital for 3 weeks. He said the pain of pancreatitis is worse than when his appendix ruptured. But he has had over 11 pancreatic attacks in the past 16 months that last about 3-5 days each. But that pain isn't enough to make him stop. Every time he passes out anywhere, I'm terrified he's dead. How does anyone live like this?
