do you need a parent's permission to get diet pills from your doctor? I am 17 years old, and have a past with a severe eating disorder. I find that every time I attempt to go to the gym or start a healthy diet, I am reeled back into starving myself or throwing up whatever I've eaten or even exhausting myself through too much exercise. I have not shared this part of my life with my parents, as it would hurt them very much, and as long as I am not TRYING to lose weight, I have my disorder under control. However, I am plagued with poor self esteem every day, and I always feel tired or lethargic. I want to lose weight to feel HEALTHY, and this is an option I'm considering so that I will not put my body in danger again. Because I cannot tell my parents for fear of breaking their hearts,  I need to know if/where I can get a prescription without consent. It doesn't need to be free either, I have money I'm willing to use for it. Any suggestions would be helpful!

Hello Savannah!  I am pretty confident that your doctor will not prescribe diet pills to you.  Even if you had your parent's permission, prescription diet pills are not given to kids under the age of 18.  You should tell your parents of your eating disorder.  Give them a little credit for handling the news. They will want to help you.  I believe you need to seek help from a doctor you can trust as well.  Eating disorders are not that easy to control, especially by yourself.  And if you need diet pills to lose weight and feel more self-esteem, then it has control of YOU.  Please seek help from your parents and your doctor.  My friend battled an eating disorder all her life and counseling helped her get control.  Good luck!

Are there any others who would like to share their story about their eating disorder?

hey Savannah

As you told that you want to loose weight to feel healthy, This is the inner voices of anorexia and bulimia whisper that you will never be happy untill you loose weight. This can be serious if you won't take a professional action. So I suggest you to tell your parents about this, they will understand your problem. If they found it in some other way then definetly they will be heart broken.

True recovery from your eating involves learning to do following things and not to have pills to treat it:

  • Listen to your body.
  • Listen to your feelings.
  • Trust yourself.
  • Accept yourself.
  • Love yourself.
  • Enjoy life again.
