I can get by with a stick. I can drive without stalling or making an ass of myself, but I'm by no means good at it. I've never had much opportunity to drive with it. My next car will be a standard though.

The modern ones are fun to drive but you get sick of having to play with a clutch etc. every time you stop. My mechanic has a 5 speed Subaru he lets me use if he needs to keep my car for a while. It's fun and the shifting is easy compared to cars of the 30s and 40s particularly the ones with no synchro-mesh gears. My 75 Dodge PU had no synchro on first gear which was a real pain. To keep from grinding you had to touch the 2nd gear synchro before going into 1st or reverse.

There's a commercial running right now about using a switch on the new car that keeps it from rolling when you are stopped on a hill. My fathers 49 Studebaker had "hill hold" when the overdrive was on. That was really handy but the motor vehicle inspectors who gave driving tests didn't like it, as part of the test was to stop on a hill and start up again without rolling backward or stalling.

I doubt any of my neighbors would teach me :?

It's not something that really needs to be taught. Ease off the clutch as you're pushing the gas. Steadiness is key. Just go to an abandoned parking lot and practice starting and stopping until your left calf can't take it anymore.

I'd of course need a vehicle to do this with. I doubt any of my neighbors would let me practice with theirs. :P

You'd be surprised. Just remind them that you will never be able to DD without being able to drive a stick.

I'm not sure I understand the value of a manual transmission. I know a car is cheaper to buy when it's stickshift, but the cost of replacing the clutch, which I understand happens at least once in the lift of a car, isn't cheap. Is there another part to it I'm missing?

Oh, and I don't judge men on their car ability. I use other standards.

I don't think there is any advantage in having a manual transmission, in fact I feel the automatic is better. The manual was the first type available and some guys feel it's a macho thing to drive one because the automatic doesn't require the experience to operate. Actually the transmission used in Henry's Model T was similar in operation to an automatic except the shifting was done by the driver and it didn't have a torque converter which is one of the advantages of an automatic. It IS fun to drive a truck with many gears but even those are becoming automated. I was sitting in the waiting room at a truck spring shop about 10 years ago where I was getting the springs on my Jeep beefed up to carry the snow plow. There were a couple big truck drivers talking about the computer controlled shifting on their trucks. Neither of them seemed to feel too negative about it. There is a certain feeling of pride in being able to shift and double clutch a multi speed transmission and it's fun but in a normal car I can't see having a manual.
