What's your diet like? Has anyone talked to you about your diet? On top of everything your current doctor is doing, going on a sugarfree and yeast free diet can go a long way to help you.
Also I recommend to find another specialist.

Howdy Cedozier, My name is Steve, and I've had Polycythemia Vera, or rather was diagnosed with the disorder, about 15 years ago. I've been treated for it ever since by my Oncologist/Hematologist that made that diagnosis. The treatments have been 500cc phlebotomies, as needed, with the goal being to keep my HCT (Hematocrit) level below 42.5. I can't recall why the Dr. wants it below that number, as I believe, 45 is normal - but, at any rate, that's what we've done for years and years. There are times I go several months without needing a treatment, and other times I need to be treated weekly, until the HCT reaches the desired goal.
Being the son of a surgeon, an eye specialist (Opthomologist), I'm of the thought that you should be seeing a Hematologist, at least. I'm sorry to hear of your co-existing kidney disease, I have no experience with that malady, but - again, I would think a Urologist would be in order for that one. Still, I'm a guitar player and not a Dr., so I wouldn't rely on anything I say. If you have any questions about the blood treatments I've had over the years, I'd be more than glad to share any aspect of that subject with you.
Let's see....Um, here are a few things I've lived through these past fifty years: kidney stones - 3 times, acute pancreatitis - 3 times (30 day stays in the hospital for those 3 times), Hepatitis C (Alcoholic Hep) treated with Interferon/Rebitron therapy for one year - injections of Interferon 3 times a week...self administered, Polycythemia Vera (see above), Appendicitis, lower back surgery, Spinal Stenosis - at present - being treated for the pain only after declining surgery, power saw cut to left wrist in 1979, And - the Big Finale' - a massive stroke caused by a "virus" in the inside of my brain. The name of the stroke is very long, I can't even begin to recall or even pronounce it, but it was NOT related to the Polycythemia Vera.
I know, too much information. Still, if there is more can offer you, please feel free to email me.
Steve
i was told in early 70s that i had pv,i had bloodletting for a couple of years. Was then told that i had polycystic kidneys.Ithen had a heart attack,so they removed my right kidney.I had a further 3 attacks, the last of which was 1997.
