I had an infection about a week and a half ago, and used Monistat. It is my first infection. I know I was supposed to go to a doctor for the first infection, but I didn't have medical access. I just had protected sex with my boyfriend a few days ago, and now I think the infection has come back. I have a doctor now, so I will get tested. However, my period is coming up in a few days, because the birth control pills will be the inactive pills.

Can I get a test for yeast infection when I'm menstruating? Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to be specific.
Hi hon: It's best to wait till after your period, because they do a swab! Another thing, did you do the 3 day or the 7 day Monistat? When a yeast infection returns, it is usually better to do the 7 day. Also cut WAY back on your sugars and your carbs - easier said than done when your period is due heh?!!! 8-| XD Also eating yogurt with probiotics is a great way of putting the good bacteria into your body to fight of the yeast. Some healthies - my own word, acutally insert yogurt upinto their vagina!!!!! o.O I wouldn't advise that though!!! Unless you don't have a life and can lay down!!! Also you really don't need to see a doctor about a yeast infection, I think it is either Monistat or Canestin that even has home tests now! A yeast infection should really only be seen by a doctor, if there is pain and cramping involved. Good luck, hope this helped!

You can probably still get a test for a yeast infection while you are menstruating because it's more an issue of finding the bacteria that are causing the yeast infection but it will not be quite as easy if you are menstruating. I'm curious to hear if you used the 3 or 7 day Monistat as well and if you've cut back on sugar because that can exacerbate the problem. Keep us posted!

This is Bambi27, usually Healthnfitness Guy follows me up agreeing with me :-D this time he didn't :-(

Unfortunately he is incorrect in stating you can still get a yeast infection swab while having your period! You can't! It will not only be embarrassing for yourself and your doctor - especially messy! But you can't get a clear reading on it! Plus there is nothing you can do about the infection - such as Monistat - till after your period anyway. The cream that the suppositiry leaves in your Vagina has to be able to do it's job! So just hang tight and then try the 7 day Monistat again OK? Then health guy can get back to agreeing with me!!!! LOL /ood luck Hon

Hi hon: I posted without logging in earlier, but it didn't seem to come up.

Healthnfitness guy usually follows me up with an agreement!!! ;-) XD But this time he overruled me, which is a no no!!! XD Actually your doctor wont do a swab while you have your period, due to the fact that it is messy, plus it hides the infection. And there is nothing they can do about it while you are menustrating anyway.

Just wait till you are done, then get a swab. You might need a stronger medication. Also cut down on your sugar and carbs intake, this way the yeast wont have too much to feed on! Also taking yogurt with probiotics can help cut down on the bad bacteria.

So sorry Healthguy, but don't let this one little hiccup stop you from agreeing with me and complimenting me!!!!!! XD ;-) :-D I need it!!

I would like to say that the over the counter creams and stuff, whether they are 3 or 7 day treatments, do not always work simply because they only treat certain yeast infections. I am not a doctor but if your treatment doesn't work, or if it is your first yeast infection, you should definitely go see your doctor. It is good to have a firm idea so that in the future, you know what is going on, on your own. I am absolutely not a doctor fanatic, I hate it and I feel like I can take care of myself but I am stuck with the same thing right now and I understand what you are going through. For my part, I have an appointment this morning and my period just started this morning. Dratts. I am going anyway. Like you, even if I have protected sex, the infection comes back and we haven't had sex regularly for over a month and it is not good! We are both ready to get past that. The sugar and carbs can definitely exacerbate and the probiotics can help a lot. About the yogurt vaginal suppository (that's what I call it), I have had that before and it worked well. What it is, in fact, is probiotics in a sort of waxy tubular block, like tampon shape but half the length. Very easy to insert. Doesn't slide out as much as Monistat creams (if you know what I am talking about) and you can do it at night, when you are already down. Then again, if you have a chronic yeast infection, go to the doc. They can prescribe you with antibiotics that they say will get rid of it in a couple of days and for 3 years I heard. I just realized this post was 4 years ago! Hope you were able to get rid of that! And I hope my sayings helped somebody else!

You guys are ridiculous. I have a yeast infection and just got my period today. Right now I'm sitting in the doctors where they just did a swab and confirmed. So yes, if you have a yeast infection and your period you can still get the swab test done. They're doctors, they don't care about the mess.
