Hi I'm a 18 year old female and I got my tonsil out May 11,08 so today would make it day 13 and boy will I tell you the pain has just been getting worse and worse. I excpected to be somewhat better by now but nope only worse. I can't sleep for more than 2-3 hours at night due to intense severe pain. I can barely swallow water still and it feels like on the back left side of my tongue there is a web of skin getting pulled and it burns when ever I drink really cold water so I have to drink warm water. I have lost 15 pounds which I'm not complaining about. It's day 13 and today so far has been the worst. My throat, jaw and ears are killing me. And what is really making me mad is my doctor will not giv me any pain meds when I really need them. I end up crying all night and especially in the morning from severe pain. I haven't eaten in thirteen days and feel like I'm dying. Can someone please give me advise on how to deal with the pain and what I can eat? PLEASE HELP!!!!

Got my tonsils out on May 22... today is May 31 and the pain is... well, you know. totally screwed. It seems to come in waves and for no reason. Sometimes it can be brought on my swallowing just about anything, or just spontaneously is there.
I was actually eating better, as I recall around day 5. What IS going on? Doc looked inside and said I was healing just fine yesterday. Easy for her to say.
thanks, erika

I guess I was extremely lucky. My worst pain was after either oversleeping or not setting my alarm. I begin to dread sleeping. Otherwise, as long as I took the pain med as prescribed it was - ok. No worse than a strep throat.
I am now 11 days post-op. I can eat anything I want. Just feels like I have the regular old sore throat we are all use to.
Day 2 - 4...lived off of sweet tea, water, and jello. Pudding and ice cream burned and cause mucous build up. Tried oatmeal...made me bleed a little. I added SOFT scrambled eggs on Day 3.
Day 5...worst pain for me...I finally slept about 5 1/2 hours...I woke in the worst pain.
Day 6...ate canned chicken noodle soup diluted with milk.
Day 7 - 8...ate chicken dumplings. Developed thrush aka yeast infection.
Day 9...eating any bland foods.
Make sure you DRINK, DRINK, DRINK...it helps with the pain so much and helps the scabs loosen with out bleeding. When I was in pain jello and sweet tea were very soothing.
Also, ask your doctor for some anti-nausea medicine...mine gave me cream that you rub on your wrist. I never threw-up.

This is in response to drpepper's posting on 5/20. There is a problem with taking Excedrin for pain. I would not recommend this and I suggest you talk to your doctor instead. Excedrin contains aspirin which can cause bleeding or increase your risk of bleeding especially if you start. Aspirin stays in your body until you regenerate new blood cells apprx 120d. It has an irreversible anticoagulation effect. You were probably told to stop taking any medication that affects bleeding prior to surgery and this should have been stated after as well, until you are well healed.
Anything that contains aspirin or has anticoagulation effects should be avoided...this includes ibuprofen, motrin, NSAID's.
I had my tonsils out on June 2 and the pain intensified on day 4-5 when it felt like someone ripped out my tongue, ran it over and shoved it back in. Thought then I was getting better, but then on the 6th night woke-up feeling like someone was digging at my back gumss treasure hunting for my wisdom teeth. The pain has been horrible. I was pacing the floors that night because nothing would soothe it.
The Roxicet is helping a bit for a few hours and taking prothazmine with it to fend off nausea. Vomited once last week because of Roxicet. I force myself to eat and drink throughout the day no matter what the pain...have to stay hydrated especially now in this heat wave 95F today and a hotter one on the way tomorrow.
Keep a glass of water with you at all times and when you wake up, take a swig, swish it around to wet your mouth and back of throat then swallow. This has helped me. I was eating popsicles and ice chips constantly, but now find they are becoming aggravating and room temp water and food items are best. Hoping this week gets better. %-)

Okay, I am 25 just had my tonsils removed Thursday June 5th. The first day (day of surgery) i took my meds on time (codine) and was doing really well considering I had just had surgery in the morning...I had tons of energy, but not much of an appitite. On saturday I threw up everything (mostly just liquid & my liquid codine)...then i was nauseated beyond belief. I am on the end of day 6...tommorrow is day 7. Day's 4-6 have been the WORST...day 5 i threw up all day & couldn't eat & refused to take more codine due to vomiting (yes..I have also been religiously taking my promethezine too-I still got sick). Then today the pain was SO bad (i have a high tolerance for pain) I was on my kitchen floor crying because my ears and throat felt just AWFUL...this is not an easy recovery! I have had a lot of people at work tell me "why do you need 2weeks of recovery for THAT?" and kind of laughing at me...but that's what my ENT said 14 days to recover. Nobody understands how bad this recovery is unless they have seen or known someone who has gone through it or if they have personally. I would be TERRIFIED to have to go through this again. Someone actually said to me "with modern medicine it wont take you 14 days..you're young & healthy (25yrs) and you'll heal fast" WHATEVER--modern medicine doesn't help...this is AWFUL! I'm praying I will feel better soon....just want to feel normal again. I'm back on my codine today because after I cried from the pain I decided I'll deal with the vomiting vs. pain. The pain in throat/ears got so severe today that I WANTED to go to the hospital & be put on a morphine drip. I feel for anyone getting this done as an adult...or even as a kid...it's awful! (have i said awful enough?). Day 7 is tommorrow...and I'm scared to go to bed every night because pain gets very bad since Im not hydrating all night (read that message on here from someone--so true!!) Good luck to anyone doing this..

I am a 34 year old who is 13 das post op - My Dr. used a heated harmonic scalpel all in all it has been a lot better than I thought it would be after reading all the info before the operation. I had never had surgery before so - I was pretty freaked. Day one I felt very little pain - Day two is uncomfortable - the nurse and my Dr. said I could take ibuprophen and to tell the truth it helped way more than the liquid Tylenol w/ codine. I used my chlildren's Motrin ) IT SAVED MY LIFE!!! I think it really helps with the inflamation. Be prepared for ear pain I thought on day five I was over the pain but then the coating on the throat starts to come off and the nevres are pretty raw. I didn't really expect the ear pain I won't lie it is really painful. (again the motrin was a godsend) and heating pads on the ears - Ice on the throat Ice on the outside will help more than you can believe. My advice is The minute you get home from the hospital get ice on the throat and keep it on in 20 min intervals or so 20 min on 20 min off. It really doesn't let the body have a chance to swell to a point that is unmanageable and drink drink - Propel fitness water went down great it has a bit of a sweet taste and does not sting at all. I would do it again in a heartbeat - I have had some issues with clenching my jaw in my sleep since the operation - I think it was my body's way of dealing with the pain in my sleep. - I am using a mouth guard at night and it has worked great. for some reason my pain has been worse at night but I timed my meds so that I could take a does at night - 20 min after the motrin I would fall back asleep. Thank god for a supportive husband and mother --You will need help. Just stay positive - it will be depressing at times but know it will pass and in the end it will be worth it.
P.S. I actually ate a peice of steak and a baked potatoe for dinner tonight and it wnt down okay - it will be sore at first but it was sooooooo good. Hang in there.

I had my tonsils & adenoids taken out exactly 7 days ago. When I first woke up i was in barely any pain and was talking up a storm :-) After i woke up i was given codeine w/liquid tylenol & i fell asleep. A couple hours later, i woke up & felt extremely sick. I started throwing up massive amounts of blood, this happened 3 times. I stayed overnight, just to make sure it didnt happen again. The next day i was sent home & i felt fine. But soon after i started getting pain like someone was stabbing the back of my throat. I found the best way to cure it was drink. The pain went away & i have been eating normal foods, the only downside is i have that horrible taste & nothing at all tastes good. I've found that my voice is permanently changed, because, as the dr says, my HUGE adenoids blocked some of the sound. I'm not in as much pain any more, but recently my ears have been hurting so bad, especially when i swallow. I hope my scabs come off soon!!!

I am one who has had a fairly good experience with this surgery post-op. Of course it hurts and you feel nauseated, but not much worse than bad sore throat with the flu. Water burned my throat at first, so I ate ice chips similiar to a slushy. Made myself chase medicine down with water...painful, but I think it helped in the long run. I just kept my throat constantly wet with ice chips, popsicles and eventually water.....even during the night hours. Luke-warm chicken broth also had a soothing affect on days 2 and 3. I slept in an incline position as to keep my head very elevated and also kept gel ice packs on both sides of my neck as often as I could throughout the day. Kept pain medication constant every 4 hrs and took my antibiotics. The pain and swelling has been very manageable and now am just dealing with some tenderness and aches along with stomach problems from the meds. Be strong and try not to be too dramatic....handle as you would any other sickness. I think this helps mentally get through it. Good luck to all as I know I have been a fortunate one. I am 26.

I am 36 and in the UK. I am day 6 following my tonsills being removed.
I have to say if I knew it would be this painful I would not have had it done. Trust me I am no baby. I am a big tough guy and it still hurts :-). The worst is night. I can not lie down as the pain in my ears and throat is like I am being stabbed. I have to sit up and after 30 mins the pain subsides.
As for meds I am taking 1000mg of paracetamol and 60mg codine in soluable format four times a day.
When does the pain go away and what can I do about sleeping??

I havent really seen anyone mention this more than once but cough drops really have seemed to help me. I have been drinking only tea as water burned like fire. I had a hellacious time from having acid reflux. It felt like a volcano in my throat. Prilosec and Mylanta remedied that. A humidifier on at all times helped me tremendously. I have not been hungry since my surgery so I really have not had that much solid food. Lots of jello and popsicles, cough drops, Magic Mouthwash, tea , humidifier, chewing gum and staying on top of meds. Those are the best tips I can give. I am currently on day 13! Still experiencing pain in throat and ears, have scabs hanging in my throat. My tongue is still a little sore too. I hope all of you are feeling better. I know my day is coming soon. At least I hope so!

Hi everyone i am a thirteen year old male from Arizona and i am currently 6 days in to my tonsillectomy and let me tell you the pain today hurts! I was given acetaminophen with codeine and the first day was ok but i was drugged with morphine and something that started with a V. The second day happened to be the 4th of july and everyone in my family was eating burgers and what not and i was eating nothing. Just drinking LOTS of water, at least a bottle and a half every hour. Then i tried a milkshake and it was easy to swallow but got alot of mucus and went to cough it up, BAD IDEA! i coughed and my uvula (punching bag thing in your throat) flew up and got caught between my tounge and the roof of my mouth and it felt like someone had grabbed it and ripped it out of my throat. I take the acetaminophen with codeine every 4 hours needed so i took that. The 3rd-5th day were pain free unless i was swallowing stuff that had sharp edges and i learned theat the hard way. I am currently on my 6th day and i woke up with lots of spit in my mouth. I went to spit it out in my bathroom sink and it was blood red. I thought maybe the scabs are starting to come off. I went downstairs and took my medicine (its a liquid) and it had a sharp pain when i swallowed and so i got a water bottle and it hurt so bad i wanted to cry. I mean i can take a beating but this felt like someone was taking a drill with a needle at the end in to my throat. Its been about an hour since that and i have nothing else to say but wish me luck :-D

To VeryBored- My daughter is 17 and on day 14. On day 4 she also started bleeding. Your episode doesn't sound like it was as severe as hers. She was bleeding so bad her boyfriend called 911 because I had gone to the store. her doctor met us at the hospital and took her back into surgery because she had developed a blood clot on the right side of her throat. She described the same type of stabbing pain that you had. They removed the blood clot and re-cauterized the right side of her throat. Has anyone looked at your throat lately like your parents, etc.? Jus a suggestion.

OH man guys I am on day 16 and I am fine! I really can't believe it. The liquid meds really burned my throat like fire but I read on here to add a few tablespoons of water to it and it would go down without hurting so much. I tried it and it did not burn nearly as much. I also read to use some of the teething gel for babies on your tongue to relieve some of the discomfort however I did not try that. Hang in there, I promise it does get better. I hope you have an easy recovery , both of you guys.
